What's Cookin' with Mazola & Oils?

The following made up ditty should be sung
(by you) to the melody of the theme song from

The Patty Duke Show.

To refresh your memory of the song, click below.

Now sing the song using these lyrics:

Meet Maura...

...who's lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.

But Janie's only seen the sights.
A girl can see from Boston Light.

What a crazy pair!
But they're like cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.

One pair of matching bookends,
Different as night and day.

Where Maura adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,

Our Janie loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control
What a wild duet!

Still, they're like cousins,
Identical cousins and you'll find,

They laugh alike, they walk alike,
At times they even talk alike --
You can lose your mind,

Mazola & Oils
are two of a kind!

NOW WATCH THE ORIGINAL

UNAIRED PILOT EPISODE:

I'm Jane Mazola.

I'm a detective with the Boston P.D.
Homicide Unit. Care to arm wrestle?

You know I'll beat you like I beat my brother
Frankie and all the other guys on the force.

(rt.) I'm Dr. Maura Oils, Medical Examiner.

The guys (and girl) down at the precinct
nicknamed me "Queen of the Dead."

Jane and I are BFFs. We spend a lot
of time together and do lots of things
together... like take yoga classes.

meditate...

...and give each other peculiar,
provocative and telling glances.

Actually they're called PDMAs, Jane -
public displays of mutual admiration.

We're best buds, besties...

... so close we're practically
joined at the hip.

(below) Angela Mazola, Jane's mother:
I swear to you, Jane, I haven't slept a wink since you
got it in your foolish, stubborn head to become a cop.

Being a cop is a man's job. Looking pretty and
cooking meals for him is a woman's role in this world.
Look at the clothes you wear!

The man is supposed to wear the pants.
Would it kill you to put dress on now and then?
Yes, actually it would, ma.

Jane, you need a man
in your life. There's a
cute billionaire doctor
I'd like you to meet.

I'm good, ma.

She's good,
Mrs. Mazola.
Believe me,
she's good.

  1. Hi Shady! What a nice plug for these two beauties! I have seen this show quite a bit, but don't see it every week. I think it comes on Saturday evenings on one of our off channels that I do watch frequently. I love detective programs with Medical Examiners on the scene. This show is really good, and both ladies are very attractive, and funny too!

Good job throwing out your pitch for them, Shady! I would watch "The Patty Duke Show" every week. It was a great show for us girls to pick up new styles and attitudes-and, Patty Duke was good at dishing them out! She has always been one of my favorite actresses, and I was saddened by her death.

Did you notice that Blogger changed some things around, and our little identifying photos are gone from our profiles! I don't get it, but whatever! Hope you had a great weekend, Shady. We have sunshine and 50+ temps today, however, it was cold and windy over the weekend.

Thank you for the great post on two of the coolest ladies on TV. Have a wonderful week, dear friend! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Yessum, even though today is a major holiday :) we're open for business, and I thank you very much for coming, dear friend! You claim the early bird honors this week, so congratulations!

No, I was not aware of Blogger making any changes. Are you sure you didn't change your settings somehow? I ask that because I just checked a blog where I left a comment this morning and my pipe-mouth Shady avatar remains intact on my comment.

I'm glad you are familiar with the TV crime drama Rizzoli & Isles. Mrs. Shady got me started watching it a couple of years ago and we plowed through the entire series on Hulu. It was tragic when Lee Thompson Young, one of the main cast members, took his own life in the middle of the series run. Attractive female medical examiners seem to be a hot trend on TV because Dana Delany also plays one on Body of Proof, another show that Mrs. Shady and I watched.

I'm glad you have fond memories of The Patty Duke Show. I watched it occasionally, but not regularly. Our weather is warm and the a/c is running all day and night. That's par for the course in Florida nine months out of the year.

Thank you again for coming to see my April Fools' Day post, dear friend Suzanne. Two big birthday posts are coming up here at Shady's Place starting at mid month, so stay tuned. Please give Scootie a hug for me and have a wonderful week!

  2. Happy April Fool's Day, dear friend! Your entry put a smile on my face and my mouth let out a huge chuckle.

Opposites attract. This reminds me of my one cousin and me. I might have to check out Rizzoli and Isles.

Have a wonderful April Fool's Day, dear friend.

    1. Hi Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming over to view my annual April Fools' Day post, dear friend!

I'm glad my parody of the TV cop drama Rizzoli & Isles put a smile on your face and made you chuckle. R & I is actually quite wholesome and family friendly compared to most other crime dramas, yet the writers, producers and promotional people go out of their way to tease the possibility that the two female leads are secretly lovers or at least have girl crushes on each other. It is an entertaining series filled with characters you can't help liking and caring about and Mrs. Shady and I highly recommend it.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend JM, and have a wonderful week!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Why is everybody's picture disappearing? Do you know and what if anything can be done about it? You can watch R&I on Hulu and on Amazon. I am not sure if it is still available in reruns on TNT. You will need to check your listings.

Thanks for coming over, dear friend JM, and enjoy your Friday and weekend!

  3. Shady,

You made me reach way back in my memory bank to remember The Patty Duke Show. I could almost recite those lyrics to the T!

I don’t watch that detective show but I’m guessing they are opposites like Patty and her identical cousin. I do like Angie Harmon though!

    Happy April Fools day!

    1. Hi, Toni!

Thanks for coming over to see what Shady cooked up for April Fools' Day this year. I am very happy to see you, dear friend!

I'm surprised someone your age remembers The Patty Duke Show. If you watched the series first run you would have been a young child. More likely you caught it in reruns in the late 60s or 70s.

Yessum, the two female leads on Rizzoli & Isles are exact opposites in many ways. One is very girly and the other is a tomboy, but they do have a few key things in common. They are both attractive young women in positions of power and authority doing jobs traditionally reserved for men, and they have a great fondness for each other. I'm sure you remember Angie Harmon from Law & Order and Sasha Alexander from the early years of NCIS.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Toni, and enjoy the rest of your week!

April Fools Day … hmmm … When I was 4/5 years old my family send me over to the neighbours in order to fetch some sand for some motor … and so I did … I'm sure it was funny for them … but sure it was not very funny for me. Anyway … Love, cat.

    1. Hi, cat!

How are you, dear Canadian friend? Thanks for coming!

The post should be self explanatory, dearie. Rizzoli & Isles is a TV series Mrs. Shady and I watched and highly recommend. It ran on TNT from 2010 to 2016 - 105 episodes in all. Although this post might be considered a parody, it comes close to the actual scenes and dialogue found throughout the series. If you have Hulu and enjoy scripted crime dramas with humor and a dash of spice, I urge you to give R&I a try.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend cat!

Josh Groban turned in a splendid performance of "It's Now Or Never," and I also appreciated his fine backing singers and musicians. Thanks for letting me know you added that performance from NBC's Elvis All-Star Tribute that aired a few weeks ago, a program I didn't see but wish I had.

  5. Tom,

Patty Duke was such a cutie, wasn't she? I'm not familiar with the Rizzoli & Isles series. We don't subscribe to Hulu, but I will see if it's available on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Usually police detective shows don't really get me cranked up too much but I might be surprised. It's worth checking out seeing how it's one of y'all favorites. Thanks for the giggles for April's Fool Day and for your recent visits. I'm a bit pushed to catch up after a long weekend spent with DH as well as recovering from stomach issues. Thankfully, I'm doing better. :) Have a great day, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for popping over to find out What's Cookin' with Mazola & Oils, dear friend! I am always happy to see you.

I wasn't a regular viewer of The Patty Duke Show, but I loved her Academy Award winning performance as Helen Keller in the 1962 film The Miracle Worker and her shocking portrayal of the drunk and disorderly Neely O'Hara in the 1967 movie Valley of the Dolls.

With two established female stars in the lead roles, Rizzoli & Isles is one of the better cop dramas produced in recent years. It doesn't exploit sex and violence nearly as much as CSI, Criminal Minds and other crime procedurals I have watched, and the characters make you care. I hope you can find the show somewhere and give it a whirl.

I am sorry to learn that you had stomach issues over the weekend. That's the last thing you need heading into the grueling A to Z Challenge. I'm glad you're feeling better today and grateful that you took time to break away from the hop to check out my April Fools' post.

Thanks again for your visit, dear friend Cathy. I will see you tomorrow over at CAAC!

I like Angie Harmon and would watch this show if I had a chance but my hubby is not a fan and I have so many shows and movies, I never watched it but I can easily see they would tease at a lesbo feel up. It reminds me of Xena which did the same th8ng..yes I watched tha5 show. I wonder why my picture no longer shows up, I bet it’s because of the google changes and I have no idea how to fix that.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thank you very much for coming to take a peek at the post, dear friend!

You are the second person to mention changes to Google or Blogger that have removed the picture from the profile and/or comment. I wonder what's going on. I have been leaving comments on other blogs and so far my Shady pipe-mouth avatar continues to be published along with them.

Mrs. Shady likes Angie Harmon a little more than I do. She has been watching reruns of Law & Order for years and Angie was in some of the early seasons as you might recall. I loved Sasha Alexander in the early years of NCIS and enjoyed her portrayal of Maura Isles "Queen of the Dead" on this series which Mrs S and I just finished watching a few months ago. I was stunned when one of the main cast members, Rizzoli's partner, committed suicide in the middle of the series' run. The writers needed to whip together a script to kill off his character. The female actress who was cast in the wake of his death was endearing, fit right in, and was ultimately a great addition to the show.

Thanks again for joining the April Fools' fun, dear friend BB!

  7. Hi Tom. Do you know how old Patty Duke was when she did that show? It's so hard to tell with people back then. Their hair styles and clothing styles made them look much older than today's young people.

Hope you enjoyed your April Fools Day. I managed to come out unscathed by any pranks. Don't know how that happened!

    1. Hi, Sherry!

(I love it when you call me Tom. :) Welcome over to Shady's Place where we are salivating April Fools' Day by learning what's cookin' with Mazola & Oils.

You asked a good question, Sherry. Patty Duke was age 16 during production for the first season of her sitcom which began airing the fall season of 1963. She was 18 when the series ended in the spring of '66. I agree that she looked older than she actually was at that time. Here's an interesting tidbit. The year before her sitcom made its debut, Patty starred as Helen Keller in the film The Miracle Worker. Patty was 15 years old and was at first considered way too old to portray a 7 year old girl, but she landed the role and won an Academy Award for it.

If you and your family enjoy cop dramas, I urge you to watch R&I. It's a series with heart and humor, not blood and gore.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Sherry!

  8. Jeez, the last time I watched The Patty Duke Show, I must have been in the fifth grade (by which time it was in syndicated reruns.) It's difficult judging a show by a childhood memory and not through adult eyes, but even as an 11-year old I remember being impressed by Duke's ability to play two very different characters, sometimes to such an extent it seemed like it was two different actresses you were watching.

As for Rizzoli and Isles, I'll have to put that on my ever-expanding To Watch list. Just by looking at those pictures and reading your description, they do remind me a bit of Xena and Gabrielle, albeit with a modern wardrobe.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming over, good buddy. I'm delighted to see you!

Yep, you are ten years younger than Shady. Chances are you watched The Patty Duke Show in reruns. Did you know that, at any given moment of any given day or night, somewhere in the world, on someone's television set... My Mother The Car is playing. (Sorry for drifting off topic.:) You're right. Patty Duke was a fine actress. Did you catch her shocking dramatic performance in Valley of the Dolls? It's must see.

Like Xena and Gabrielle, Jane and Maura have, as Wiki call it, "a strong bond of love and friendship." They don't smooch on the show like gay characters do on Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Modern Family, but their romantic involvement is hinted at in nearly every episode, an undercurrent that runs throughout the series' seven season lifespan. The TNT promotional material also strongly supports the theory.

Thanks again for coming over, good buddy Kirk, and enjoy the rest of your week!

Thank you very much for coming by to experience my annual April Fools' post, dear friend! We have investigative reporter Geraldo Rivera to thank for dynamiting the door off the vault on live TV and salvaging the lost pilot episode of Mazola & Oils. :)

So cops shows aren't your thing, not since Cagney and Lacey, huh? It might help to know that Rizzoli & Isles is not a typical crime drama. It is a show about family ties. It has a lot of heart and a lot of humor mixed in with the case solving.

Thanks for the Holli-day greeting, dear friend Holli. I'm always happy to see you here and I hope you enjoy the rest of your week!

Thanks a lot for making time for a visit to Shady's Place, dear friend!

I'm glad you appreciated what I put together this year for April Fools'. I have been planning to salute Rizzoli & Isles ever since Mrs. Shady and I finished watching the series a few months ago. The parallels between it and The Patty Duke Show occurred to me early on, and I built a parody post on that basis. Mrs. S and I highly recommend R&I if you enjoy cop dramas with humor, heart and characters that make you care.

Thanks again for joining the fun today, dear friend Cheryl-Lee, and have a great month!

Thanks so much for coming to my April Fools' party, dear friend. I am delighted to see you!

It's good to know The Patty Duke Show is fresh in your mind from having watched a few episodes in recent years. It has been much longer since I watched the show. Patty Duke was beside herself in that dual role. :)

My instincts tell me you would enjoy Rizzoli & Isles. The focus is on family rather than lots of shooting, blood and sick serial killers. The two female leads have chemistry and make you care. I've seen pictures of you, YaYa. These ladies would be green with envy and wishing they looked more like YOU!

Thank you again for swinging over from Ohio for a visit. I hope spring has finally sprung in your neck of the woods. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend YaYa!

  12. Hi Shady!

What a fun post! I used to race downstairs to watch TV whenever I heard the Patty Duke Show tune, and loved her in The Miracle Worker. I found it fascinating that the idea for the Patty Duke show, with two opposing characters, came from observations of her (Patty) own behavior.

I haven't seen Rizzoli and Isles, but it looks like a show I'd enjoy ;-)

    1. Hi, diedre!

Thank you very much for coming by, dear friend. I'm excited to see you!

I didn't know that piece of trivia about Patty Duke. Thanks for sharing it. If you saw the tormented, drunken, belligerent character she played in Valley of the Dolls, you witnessed another example of her acting range.

I think you'd enjoy Rizzoli & Isles. Clearly it is a program that targets female viewers, because it does not indulge in extreme violence and gore. It's all about family and a warm friendship between two professional women. If you give it a try you'll soon see what I mean.

It is always my pleasure to visit Pensive Pens. I look forward to the interesting and thought provoking topics you present and the eloquence with which your posts are written.

I hope those lovely yellow blooms don't attract thousands of tourists eager to snap selfies as they trample and pick them. Snapping selfies in scenic spots, on high cliff ledges and while posing with wild animals has become a nuisance habit in recent years and has led to injury, death and harm to the ecology. Sadly the frivolous practice will likely continue to get worse.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, diedre. If it is possible for you to return on the 13th and the 18th, I would love to have you here as I observe two VIP birthdays. Thank you, dear friend!
