That Was Then - This Is Now, Volume 3: The Jarring
Juxtaposition of Female Vocalists Past and Present!

You've come a long way, baby...

 and these jarring juxtapositions

 offer indisputable proof!

Welcome to Vol. 3 of my series

Jarring Juxtapositions:

That Was Then - This Is Now!

It is not my intention to pass judgement. (That's your job. :) This series
merely invites you to compare apples and oranges. Hard as it might
be for you to believe, I enjoy all of the female recording artists
you are about to see and hear. Join me on this jarring journey
back and forth through time as we compare the look,
the sound and the attitude of female singers
then... and now!

THAT WAS THEN
ANNETTE

She was our favorite
Mousketeer. Her name
was Annette Funicello,
but everyone knew
her as Annette.

After hanging up
her mouse ears...
Annette co-starred
with teen idol
Frankie Avalon
in a series of
beach movies.
Remember that
time long, long
ago, when songs encouraged boys
and girls to treat
each other - nicely?

"Treat Him Nicely" - Annette
(from Aug. 1963 film Beach Party)

THIS IS NOW
 DRAGONETTE

In stark contrast to America's sweetheart - sweet, shy girl next door
Annette, listen now to brash and sassy Martina Sorbara, lead zinger
of the Canadian electropop, new wave synthpop band Dragonette.
The song starts out innocently enough - "Merry Xmas (Says Your
Text Message)" - but OMG! - it soon takes a very nasty turn!

"Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message)" - Dragonette
(2012 promotional single)

THAT WAS THEN
GALE GARNETT

In 1964, New Zealand born Canadian singer Gale Garnett gained fame
with a recording of a pop/folk song she wrote entitled "We'll Sing
in the Sunshine." Gale's single reached the top 5 on the Hot 100,
went all the way to #1 on Cash Box, crossed over to the
easy listening and country charts and
won a Grammy award.

"We'll Sing In The Sunshine" - Gale Garnett
(Oct. 1964, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100, #1 Cash Box,
#1 Easy Listeningfrom 1964 album My Kind of Folk Songs)

THIS IS NOW
 MILEY CYRUS

Miley Ray Cyrus could have stuck with her actual birth name
Destiny Hope Cyrus and still had a cool stage name with which
to ply her trade as a singer, songwriter and actress. (Wonder when
we'll see "Destiny's child.") Over the last few years, Miley Cyrus
has mellowed somewhat but, there for a while, she thrived on
the controversy surrounding her provocative image and wild
behavior. Submitted for your approval (or disapproval) -
Exhibit A: Miley's 2013 hit single/video "We Cant Stop."

"We Can't Stop" - Miley Cyrus
(July/Aug. 2013, highest chart pos. #2,
from Oct. 2013 album Bangerz)

THAT WAS THEN
LINDA RONSTADT

As the story goes, Capitol records was reluctant to allow Linda Ronstadt to
record country songs. Linda persisted and in March 1970, the poignant
ballad "Long, Long Time" found its way onto her second solo studio
album Silk Purse. Linda's instincts were spot-on. "Long, Long Time"
became her first charting single, a top 30 hit, and she earned her
first Grammy nomination. I regard this appearance by Linda
on The Johnny Cash Show as her best live performance of
the song. In fact, I consider it to be one of the greatest
live performances ever. Watch and listen as this
national treasure, Linda Ronstadt, literally
suffers through the song, conveying
raw emotion in a subtle, restrained
manner - sheer brilliance!

"Long, Long Time" - Linda Ronstadt
(Sept. 1970, highest chart pos. #25, from Mar. 1970
album Silk Purse, live perf. on The Johnny Cash Show)

THIS IS NOW
 IN THIS MOMENT

Last but not least, here is a first for my #1 ranked music act of the millennium.
It's my singing sweetie, Maria Brink, and her LA based metal band In This Moment
with their first song w/o any "clean" vocals. In other words, folks, it's all screaming.
(There's a good chance this fierce band will stamp out clean vocals in our lifetime.)
In their 2013 Blood at the Orpheum show in Madison, Wisconsin, that resulted
in the release of a live album and DVD, the beauty and her beasts stoked the
crowd with an incendiary performance of a song from their acclaimed album
A Star-Crossed Wasteland. Tap your toes as Maria sings-- "The Gun Show!"

"The Gun Show" - In This Moment
(promo single from July 2010 album A Star-Crossed Wasteland,
live perf. May 2013 at Blood at the Orpheum show, Madison, WI)

And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory
of a love that never was
I've done everything I know
to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you
for a long, long time

Have a Shady day!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for being the early bird again this time, good buddy! I'm happy to see you.

Those fans at the Orpheum in Madison, Wisconsin, got plenty of BANG for their bucks as Miss Maria took them to the Brink of metal madness and mayhem with a rousing rendition of "The Gun Show," a single from In This Moment's hit album A Star-Crossed Wasteland. It must have been a killer show and I wish I had been there. Unfortunately ITM has mellowed a little since then - not a good trend, in my opinion - but this clip takes us back to the height of their greatness.

Thanks again for coming, good buddy Alex, and enjoy your weekend!

  2. I don't care for Miley Cyrus at all and I can remember her dad saying how proud he was of her back during that time she was so controversial. And speaking of Mousketeers, Britney Spears wasn't much better at one point. I've learned to tolerate (and even appreciate) her at times now.

We'll also have to part company on that last clip, Shady. It's just not my cup of tea.

All said, though, I'm not passing any judgment with my statements here - just expressing my opinion. To each their own. ;)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for coming over for a Saturday "Musical Interlude" :) - the third installment of my ear-popping series That Was Then - This Is Now. I am very happy to see you, dear friend!

A-ha! It looks like we have finally discovered your eclectic Achilles Heel, dear Kelly. You don't like Miley or Maria.

What can I say about Miley Cyrus? You either hate her..... or you REALLY hate her. (BA-DUM-BUMP) As I stated in the intro, I actually appreciate every artist I present in this series and that includes Miley and her song and video "We Can't Stop." By far my top favorite in this set is Maria Brink and her ITM band represented here in one of their greatest live performances in 2013. Five years ago this was the only type of music I listened to - extreme heavy metal - and the harder the better. A couple years later I got on a modern dance-pop kick and played nothing but Britney, Miley Cyrus and similar artists. In the last year the rudder has turned again and I am back to loving the oldies of the 50s and 60s.

If you didn't enjoy the "now" artists, then I hope you at least found something to like in the "then" group. Thanks again for being here, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  3. Tom,

I by far prefer your female artists from the past. Their vocals and mewsic arrangements are more to my taste than the newer sound of the modern chicks featured. Miley has some songs that I like, especially her older stuff. Hopefully as she grows up she'll settle down and find the purrfect balance to make her songs more appealing to ages across the age gap. In This Moment is way too heavy metal for me and I couldn't listen to it more than a few seconds. Dragonette I'd like to listen to more of her songs before passing judgement. I didn't care for "Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message)" because she used the f-word. That's an immediate turn off for me. However, I will stop by YT to sample more of her tunes. Annette Funicello was such an American Sweetheart and cute as a button! Thanks for the marvelous mewsic, my friend. Did you get your monitor replaced? Have a good weekend.

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks so much for making time for a weekend visit, dear friend. I'm glad to see you!

To answer your question, yessum, I got a new monitor and am back up to speed with little time lost. Thank you for asking!

It doesn't surprise me that you favor the "then" artists over the "now" group. The songs performed by Dragonette, Miley Cyrus and Maria Brink are all intended to shake things up, to stimulate, shock and offend. That's what rock 'n' roll has been doing since the mid 50s and I like it like that.

Whenever I watch old clips of Annette singing I get misty eyed remembering how she took ill and died too soon. She was a sweet and decent lady. When her life was cut short she was robbed and so were her millions of adoring fans.

Thank you again for taking time out from your holiday preparations to visit and weigh in on the changing look, sound and attitude of female vocalists past and present. Once again, happy birthday to you, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    2. Tom,

I'm glad you got that new monitor with little down time. Annette was a sweetheart. I think she's the same age as my mom. Actually, Annette is a few years older than my mom. Anyhow, Annette always struck me as a nice person even though I never met her or I saw her on any interviews. Just looking in eyes I could see the goodness from her heart. I hope you and Mrs. Shady have a joyful, blessed Christmas, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for the return visit, dear friend! Watching Annette on The Mickey Mouse Club was one of my earliest childhood memories. I was so fond of her that I actually dreamed of marrying her someday. :) Hers was one of the many sad stories in entertainment history. Annette has been gone from this world more than five years now, since April 2013.

Thanks again for coming by and enjoy your day, dear friend Cathy!

  4. Hi Tom,
Well this sure was juxtapositional! I gotta say, and I surprised myself, I actually much preferred the Now artist in your first group. I LOVED Dragonette's Martina Sorbara and the song "Merry Xmas (Says Your
Text Message)". Sounds like something I'd say... haha
With Annette's song, I was kinda going "Oh Brother!" Oh well... :)

With the second grouping, for sure I was much more drawn to Gale Garnett. It's been ages since I heard "Let's Sing in the Sunshine". That's a great song and it brought back memories.
I'm hot and cold on Miley Cyrus, depending on her music and video performances. This one just made me sad for her, for some reason. And Good Lord, keep that tongue in your mouth, Girl! That tongue drove me crazy! I'm sure it's just a phase and hopefully she'll go back to making videos that are a little more self-respecting.

I'm sure it's no surprise to you that I didn't at all like "The Gun Show" by In This Moment, right? But I will say, I was captivated enough to listen and watch the entire video. And who were those Quasimodo-types flanking each side of Maria? I think they were guys but I couldn't tell for sure. It was an interesting performance for sure.
I loved learning about Linda Ronstadt's insistence on recording her song "Long, Long Time". A woman's intuition should always be trusted. Lucky for us that she pushed forward with her gut. That was indeed a terrific performance and it was wonderful to see Johnny and June. I'm listening to the song for a second time now. Another one that brings back memories. I love the music too. I think there's some violin in it, yes? It's beautiful.

It's so much fun to see the juxtaposition of then and now with regard to female artists. I love when you do this series. I also enjoyed Toto Moto's presentation yesterday...

Hope you're having a good weekend.

    1. Hi again, Michele!

I just came from replying to your comment on Toto Moto's post. Thank you so much for doing double duty and reading and responding to both of my new posts. It means a lot to me!

I'm thrilled to know you appreciate the concept of my TWT-TIN jarring juxtapositions series. I have around 20 volumes planned. They always spark lively discussion. Sometimes my rock loving friends surprise me when they tell me they don't like metal. Sometimes friends that I never dreamed could appreciate the hard stuff tell me they like it as much as I do. You never know for sure how a particular friend will react, and it is always fun to find out.

I'm glad you were not put off by Dragonette's use of the "F" word in their seasonal ditty "Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message)." I predicted you wouldn't be. I hear what you are saying about that Annette song in a scene from the film Beach Party. Let's remember that those beach movies starring Frankie and Annette were goofy, sappy and "dumbed down." They were produced to appeal to viewers middle age and older, not teenagers. Stereotypes abound.

I'm glad you enjoyed the remastered sound on that hybrid video of Gale Garnett. "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" was hot on the chart in the late summer of 1964 when my family vacationed at a log cabin in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania. Miley's song could have been called "We'll SIN in the Moonshine." Please remember that Miley's song and video are actually "oldies" by now. They came out in the summer of 2013 when this raunchy style of R&B was relatively new and red hot. I haven't been keeping tabs on Miley, but I think she has mellowed considerably since then and has learned to keep her tongue in her mouth. :)

It actually is a surprise to me that you don't like the brand of heavy metal played by In This Moment. It must be a guy thing. Guys tend to like harder, heavier, more extreme bands while most "rock chicks" draw the line at some point. To me, In This Moment's Blood at the Orpheum show is a collection of outstanding rock/gothic metal performances, some of the greatest by this or any other band. In This Moment puts on a stage show reminiscent of Alice Cooper, Kiss and other gothic glam bands. They are grand spectacles designed to induce maximum shock and awe with pyrotechnics, grotesque characters, elaborate costumes and props galore. I appreciate all that goes into their shows. Maria Brink's screaming is music to my ears - cathartic and therapeutic.

I'm glad you agree with me about Linda Ronstadt's appearance on The Johnny Cash Show singing "Long, Long Time." I watched other clips of Linda doing the song on Midnight Special, etc., and I regard this as her finest performance. She poured her heart and soul into it, "suffered" through every syllable, and yet kept the emotion bubbling just beneath the surface. It is a remarkable vocal performance by a tremendously talented woman.

Thank you again for leaving two excellent comments, dear friend Michele. Please take good care of yourself. After the tough year you've been through, I want very much for you to be able to enjoy your Christmas. Have a good Sunday and I hope to connect with you again soon!

    1. Hi, Gayle!

Thank you very much for dropping by on a Sunday, dear friend. I'm very happy to see you!

Well, the surprise for me is the fact that you already know the band Dragonette. Thanks for telling me about their 2009 song "Pick Up The Phone." I just watched the official music video on YouTube and enjoyed it. Seems like the band specializes in "girl power" and "girls just wanna have fun" themes.

If you remember most of the other songs presented here, then I salute you. You have a depth of music knowledge that has not been revealed on your Square Dogs blog. It isn't important for me to learn and memorize all of the lyrics to my favorite songs. The overall sound is what attracts me, and I almost always prefer the original studio sound. However there are rare instances when I come across a great live performance with good audio pick-up, such as the clip in this post of In This Moment doing a song at their 2013 show in Madison, WI. When I encounter a clip of this magnitude I feed off the excitement generated by the band and the audience and am totally swept away.

Thanks again for your Sunday visit and kind comment, dear friend Gayle!

  6. Shady, Shady! This post is "juxt-a-fabulous! I laughed and I cried...tears for fun and some for sad memories!

I skimmed through some of your friends' comments, and agree with a lot of them. I had to vote "YES" on Marina's "Merry XMAS text message song! I'm not fond of the F word either, but sometimes I believe it is warranted! How cute! Been there myself...only you had to leave voice messages on a phone recording machine back in the day, lol!

I too, despised Miley Cyrus in her earlier years. Then, one day probably 2-3 years ago, I saw a video of Miley performing Dolly Parton's "Jolene" number in a back yard scene. Shady, this turned me totally around! I couldn't believe how sincere and passionate Miley's voice and movements were while singing this song. I now have a different impression, and am willing to go with it, and give her a thumb's up for some of her latest accomplishments. And I think Miley is a better name choice for her than "Destiny Hope?"

All of these ladies are sensations in their own light! Annette had such a sweet voice, I grew up with her and Frankie Avalon! What a couple! And, what a voice on Linda Rondstadt! She was such a beautiful lady...I was truly jealous of her, and loved her songs! She always put forth such passion, didn't she! Her performance of "Long, Long Time" is truly brilliant as you say.

I truly love "We'll Sing in The Sunshine" by Gale Garnett! The song projected a message that was already being exercised by young women of the later 60's. It was evident that women could come and go in relationships and not feel guilty, or look back. It was good to hear the song again, thanks Shady!

Haha! I have to agree with Michele and Kelly on leaving miss Maria and her "Gun Show" behind, Shady! I love the "Quasimodo" types remark, and totally agree, they were kind of creepy! But, too I watched most of the video, and finally had to tune it off before it ended!

    Juxtapositions for sure, Shadymodo! LOL!

I loved this post, and apologize for being late. I'm trying to split myself in various directions right now, but I am so glad I was able to shut down and take time for this fun post! Have a great week, dear friend Shady! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks so much for coming over on the weekend to experience these Jarring Juxtapositions! :)

I'm happy to know you didn't run for the exit when you heard the F word in that Dragonette ditty. We're all adults here, aren't we? I agree that the song rings true. Many of us have been in the situation described in the song.

BINGO! You got that right about the transformation in Miley Cyrus and her rendition of "Jolene" being a turning point in her career. I must be psychic, because I published this post yesterday w/o knowing that Miley was set to appear as a musical guest last night on Saturday Night Live. She sang two songs and, although dressed provocatively, a trademark she apparently prefers to keep, she sang with heart, soul and great maturity - no twerking. Listen to her two performances and let me know what you think:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9qk5PY0duo

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2LD55qeHtg

I'm thrilled to learn that you like the folk pop sound of Gale Garnet's signature song "We'll Sing In The Sunshine." I agree the song was a product of a time when women were beginning to realize they could stand alone and didn't need the support of a man and that some relationships were not meant to last. I am also pleased that you recognized the greatness in that live performance by Linda Ronstadt on Johnny Cash. It literally brings me to tears to watch and listen to that clip.

Ha! Shadymodo thanks you for watching most of that ITM video before bailing out. Believe it or not, it also brings me to tears to watch "The Gun Show" because it is one of the finest live performances I have ever witnessed in any genre. I'm surprised more people don't recognize and appreciate the band's artistry. When Maria and the boys go on tour they pull out all the stops and put on a top notch show - an elaborate, macabre spectacle similar to the kind staged by Alice Cooper, David Bowie and other gothic and glam rock artists and entertainers. When I am in the mood for rock, I won't settle for half measure. I want the band to bring it full force, hard and heavy. They have a sworn duty to get in my face, offend and disturb. That's what metal is all about and ITM has come through for me year after year. That's why they are my favorite band of the millennium and will continue to be featured from time to time on my blog particularly in this series.

Thank you again for setting aside a block of time to read, listen and comment, dear friend Suzanne. I really appreciate it! I hope Scootie is excited about the approach of Christmas and I hope your preparations are going smoothly. I loved the cooler temperatures we had this past week and hope we get plenty more to promote the spirit of the holiday.

Stay tuned now because Dell Rat Tom returns to SPMM Radio this Thursday, the 20th, with a set of songs that will transport you back to "The Dell at Christmas." Have a great week, dear Suzanne!

    2. Prior to coming back here I did catch the two numbers Miley performed on SNL, and I especially like the first one, "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart". Again, she sings it with great passion, and her showmanship (or show womanship, lol!) has become so much more mature! I always cared a lot for John Lennon, and appreciate Sean's talents. He appears to be a bit shy, too bad he's not more in the spotlight!

I wanted to mention that my favorite Annette song was "Tall Paul"! She really rocked it with that one.

    3. Hi, Suzanne!

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend! I'm happy to know you checked out Miley's performances last night on SNL. She impressed me with both songs, and it's no secret that John Lennon meant a lot to me, too. Last weekend, Dec. 8, marked the 38th anniversary of John's assassination. I am still grieving.

I like Annette's "Tall Paul" and "O Dio Mio" singles.

Thanks again for coming back over, dear friend Suzanne. Take care of yourself and Scootie and have a wonderful week!

  7. I've seen all those Funicello beach movies. They may not be cinematic classics but--oh, who am I kidding, they ARE cinematic classics. Nice hearing Annette's Debbie Reynolds-by-way-of-Cindy Lou Who vocal stylings again.

So what's the nasty turn in the Dragonette song? The "F*#k You" or that she may be committing suicide by burying herself in seven inches of snow?

Which reminds me, I laughed out loud when Miley cut off her fingers and bled nail polish (OK, I admit I sometimes have a sick sense of humor.) But really though, that was some silly phase she was going through to prove she was no longer a squeaky clean teen (and probably to capture a bit of Lady Gaga's fan base), but as they were no longer making beach movies in 2013, what other option did she have? (They'll never bring those movies back. Who else could play Erik Von Zipper but Harvey Lembeck?)

    Fun post today.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

I was just over at your place, good buddy. Thanks for stopping by mine on a Sunday. It's great to see you!

Yep - Harvey Lembeck, Don Rickles, Bob Cummings, Dorothy Malone, Buster Keaton, Morey Amsterdam, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Paul Lynde, Brian Donlevy and other veteran actors and actresses had roles in that string of mid 60s Beach films, making them must see time capsules for that reason alone. I watched all of those pictures but considered The Three Stooges more sophisticated and better written. :)

The nasty turn to which I was referring in the Dragonette song is the dropping of the F bomb (not to be confused with Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs starring Vinnie Price and Fabian).

Did you catch Miley's two song performances last night on SNL? Use the links I provided in my reply to Suzanne's comment (above) and you
will see that she's all grown up and making new fans with a more mature singing style and material to match (but she still looks like a wardrobe malfunction just waiting to happen).

Seems like you enjoyed yourself at Shady's Place, good buddy, and that always makes me happy. Thanks again for coming, Kirk, and have a wonderful week ahead!

I really like Dragonette and Miley, ( btw, did you see Miley on SNL Saturday night? She left nothing to the imagination!) Not so sure about “ In this moment!” I’m still young at heart but that kind of “ music” is not for me! When my son was in a band, a lot of those growling/ screaming bands would play before them. I was anxious for them to be over. Hurt my ears!

    1. Hi, Toni!

Thanks for joining the fun as we jump back and forth through time to experience the jarring juxtaposition of female recording artists then and now. Frankly, I can't see or hear even the slightest difference between Annette and Maria Brink. :)

I'm delighted to know you give a thumbs up to Dragonette and to Miley. (They desperately need votes.) I haven't watched SNL in 20 years, but I found videos of Miley's performances on YouTube, watched them and appreciated her maturity. I think critics are making too much fuss about the way she presents herself and overlooking her talent.

Another thumbs down for In This Moment? That means they must be on the right track. :) "To shock and offend" is the mission statement for a good heavy metal band, and ITM is (or was) one of the greatest ever. I added the "was" because some fans are disappointed with the band's latest album claiming they went too soft and melodic. I tend to agree. I expect fierce, brutal performances like "The Gun Show," and take it as a bad sign when a band starts taking its foot off the gas. It surprises me that The Underwater would be thrown into a show with growling/screaming bands instead of other acts that more closely match their style.

Thanks again for joining me for TWT - TIN, dear friend Toni, and have a great week!

  9. Hi Shady,

Ah, Annette! I remember watching Beach Party a few times and the library has the soundtrack. I am giggling just thinking about the movie because it was so wholesome, though I will admit I'll sing along to it.

Same with Linda Rondstadt - I remember when I was first introduced to her when I bought the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. "It's So Easy" is one of my favourites. My dad saw her back in the day when she performed in our area.

Miley Cyrus has grown on me a bit. I remember hating her style back in 2013 and while I can't listen to "Blurred Lines", "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball" are pretty good. It's grown on me. I love In This Moment and I have to thank you for introducing me to them. Next time they are in Philly, I'll have to see them!

Have a great Wednesday, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thank you for coming by just in time to catch the latest installment of my series TWT - TIN before it got bumped. I am very happy to see you, dear friend!

I'm delighted to learn that you remember Beach Party, the teen musical romp that launched the successful series of films starring Annette, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Dwayne Hickman and other popular "teenage" actors of the early and mid 60s. I put quotes around teenage because Annette was almost 21 when Beach Party was released and Frankie was going on 23. Some actors and extras that had roles as teenagers in such projects were in their 30s. I'll bet your dad has fond memories of Annette. You should ask him. I'm glad to know both you and your dad like Linda Ronstadt.

I'm thrilled that you either like or love the women in the NOW group. Maria Brink is America's sweetheart of the 21st century and I hope she and her ITM band will keep on rockin' through the 2020s.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend JM!

Tell me what's on your mind
