New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady 2018 - Chris Griffin Rocks Out the Old with a Little Help from Foreign Friends!

 Hi, I'm Chris Griffin...
 the crazy mixed-up
 kid on Family Guy

 I'm a
 rockin' rebel...

and tonight I'm your host for New Year's
Rockin' Eve in the Shady, filling in for
your regular emcee Shady Seaweed
who is "under the weather." That's
code for bombed out of his gourd.

Tonight, as we bid farewell to 2018 and
make way for 2019, I'm taking you on
a trip around the world to meet some
of the young rising stars of rock.

 AMI KIM - DIO

First stop - South Korea - where we find
Ami Kim, an electrifying young drummer
who specializes in covers of rock and
metal nuggets. Ami slaughters the skins
with a cover of "Holy Diver, " the 1983
lead single from the Ronnie James Dio
album of the same name.

START VIDEO AT 1:15 MARK!

 SINA DOERING -
 THE KNACK

By now you should know Sina, the prodigious
German drummer I introduced on Shady Dell
Music & Memories in 2017. Sina was also
featured this week in Shady's Christmas
post. I am happy to tell you that Sina is
back again tonight, this time to do a
colossal cover of "My Sharona," the
1979 international chart-topper by
the LA rock band The Knack.

(Oct. 2018 drum cover by Sina)

 ANDREEA
 MUNTEANU &
 ANDREI CERBU
 - KISS

For the last several years Shady Seaweed
has been Kissing the old year goodbye
with Kiss. Three months ago here at
Shady's Place, you met Liliac...
a band of rockin' siblings from
LA with roots in Romania.

Now meet two more talented Romanian music makers, teenage guitarist
Andrei Cerbu and his friend - zinger (singer) Andreea Munteanu.
Together they KILL doing the Kiss klassic "Heaven's On Fire!"

 "Heaven's on Fire" - Kiss
(June 2018 cover by Andreea Munteanu & Andrei Cerbu)

 THE GAS FEAT.
 SINA DOERING

Now once again here is German
drum sensation Sina Doering,
this time playing with The Gäs,
a hard rock band from Cologne,
Germany. Sina joined the band
in May of 2017 when she turned
eighteen. Last Christmas the band
released "Player," a song from their
2018 debut album Savage.

(Dec. 2017 single from Jan. 2018 album Savage

 TYLER LEADS

Now here's Tyler Leads, another heavy rock
band from Germany that played gigs with
The Gäs in 2018. In 2017, Tyler Leads
released the first single from their EP
Stay Ugly. Featuring dynamic lead
vocalist Johnny Kovacs, here is
Tyler Leads with their debut
music video "Call Of The Wild."

 ANDREI CERBU -
 PINK FLOYD

Earlier in the show you met teenage Romanian
guitarist Andrei Cerbu. Andrei is winning fans
all over the world because he feels the music
and performs like a boomer age veteran.
Andrei RULES on this guitar solo from
"Another Brick in The Wall" by English
prog rockers Pink Floyd.

 Andrei Cerbu)

 SINA DOERING
 ANDREI CERBU &
 JOHNNY KOVACS -
 BLACK SABBATH

You've heard the incredible drummer girl Sina.
You've heard the guitar virtuoso Andrei Cerbu.
Put them together with Johnny Kovacs, a lead
singer who sounds like Ozzy, and you've got
a knockout punch. The trio ANNIHILATES
doing the great Sabbath song-- "War Pigs."

 The show's over and it
 bums me out... but I
 hope you enjoyed the
 sounds of these young
 rockers from around
 the world.

 This is Chris Griffin
 signing off for now.
 Remember, gang...
 you gotta fight
 for your right
 to party...
 and rock!

 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for being the early bird on this day after Christmas, dear friend! I was just composing my comment on your blog. Welcome back to mine!

I'd love to take the credit for discovering these talented rock-oriented musicians and singers from around the world, but the actual talent scout is Chris Griffin. :) I'm glad your ears agree with mine that Romanian guitar player Andrei Cerbu does justice (and then some) to Pink Floyd's famous "Brick" composition.

Hang on, because Sina and her musical friends will be back with more great covers of rock classics in future posts, and we haven't heard the last of Chris Griffin, either. :)

Thanks again for coming over today, dear friend Kelly. Enjoy the rest of your week and happy new year to you!

  2. They're all great, but I'm really taken with the "Heaven on Fire" cover, maybe because of the novelty of hearing a female sing a Kiss song. It sounds fresh, which I don't think would be the case had a male (other than Paul Stanley) done it.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming, good buddy! As you discovered, Shady's Place is open for business 24-7 and that includes the holiday period. (I'm kicking myself because I accidentally left the DO NOT DISTURB sign in the window all day. :)

I agree with you, Kirk. Young Romanian zinger Andreea Munteanu won me over with her performance of the Kiss Klassic "Heaven's On Fire." She and her guitar hero partner Andrei Cerbu put lots of fun and pizzazz into it. Their cover is indeed refreshingly different. Simply put, their playful approach to the song works.

I'm pleased that you also appreciated the other performances by these amazing young talents from South Korea, Germany and Romania. The future of rock is in good hands thanks to these up-and-coming international singers and musicians.

Thanks again for checking in and checking out my annual New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady show, good buddy Kirk. Happy new year to you!

  3. I hope that you feel better! We want you healed for the new year. :)

All of these artists sound amazing. I might have to play these before midnight, so I can stay up!

    Happy Wednesday, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for popping in to sample the sights and sounds of these young rockers around the globe.

Yessum, Chris Griffin is subbing for Shady Seaweed who got his hands on a bad batch of moonshine. At last report Shady was barricaded in the ladies' lounge at Radio City Music Hall. (Dated reference to 1961 Rock Hudson movie Lover Come Back.)

I'm glad you liked these rockin' sounds from rising young stars in Korea, Germany and Romania, dear friend JM. Thanks again for coming and happy new year to you!

    2. How are you feeling today, Shady? I hope you're feeling better - it's no fun being sick during the holidays!

I'm watching a co-worker's 9 year old on Monday, then I'm seeing the orchestra on Monday night. Will come home before midnight and ring in the New Year at home since Lyft charges more during prime time.

I think I will give these gems a listen as I write my last note for Happiness Box 2018. In 6 days I get to open my box!

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.

    3. Hi again, Jessica Marie!

That was supposed to be a joke about Shady being under the weather, but I actually took ill yesterday with a cold and sore throat, so life imitated art, I guess you could say. I think I'll live. Thanks for your well wishes! I am on the road again, more family holiday stuff, and my blogging time is limited.

It would be a great honor to Chris Griffin if you played his tuneage as you pen the last note for your 2018 Happiness Box. I am excited for the big reveal.

I hope you enjoy the orchestra Monday night and get home in time to ring in the new year in whatever way makes you happy. Thank you very much for another full year of friendship and support, dear friend JM!

  4. Hey, Shady! I was surprised to see the NYE bash started early, but depending on the situation, I might just be back to listen NYE night- as a Time Lord, I'm allowed! That little Romanian girl- she's either a real tiny thing, or her partners 7 foot-something! Did a fine job, though!

I thought I would stop by to let you know if you are so inclined that the Beauty Contest '18 is going to drop either Thursday the 3rd or Friday the 4th. I think I announced the 4th, so let's go with that.

Maybe I should start having guest hosts of a more cartoonish nature. I had an incident a few months back with the Beatles, and Elvis' balogna casserole at the buffet, and George Harrison's trousers, but I disgress. Hope you had a great Christmas and have a rockin' new year!

    1. Hi, Chris!

How are you, good buddy? I'm thrilled to see you back here at Shady's Place. Thanks a lot for dropping in!

Every year I publish my New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady post on Dec. 26 so that it can have a six day run before my annual Year of the Dell Rat feature begins on January 1. That gives you the option of enjoying the show now or waiting until the night of Dec. 31 to experience it.

I'm glad you like Romanian spark plug Andreea Munteanu and her partner, teenage guitar prodigy Andrei Cerbu doing that Kiss song. Andreea appears regularly on Andrei's YouTube channel doing songs in different genres. A few days ago Andreea, Andrei and their friends collaborated on a groovy rendition of Feliz Navidad:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fbk3-75zdc

I hereby request that Andreea Munteanu be included in your Beauty Contest. :) Thank you very much for inviting me to your next BC. I am indeed inclined and I will BOLO for it.

Thanks again for coming over, Chris. You are always welcome here. Mrs. Shady and I are up to our ears in family events again today and tomorrow, but after that things should settle back into more of a routine. I hope Scrappy is hanging in there and that you and Laurie are in good health and good spirits and that you had a great Christmas.

Happy new year to you, good buddy Chris. I'll see you on the 3rd or 4th!

  5. Tom,

This post really has the beat! :D Ami Kim is not only an impressive drummer but has an impressive set of drums! I remember Sina from 2017. I was blown away by her talent. It's cool that she's now rockin' it with a metal band. I worry about her just a little, though. The industry is enudated with some very bad influnences and I hope she doesn't fall prey to the evil vices associated with the entertainment arena. WOW, Andrei Cerbu, is an electric bass guitarist! Didn't you introduce this kid to me about the same time that you shared Sina's drum features? You really know how to kiss the old year good-bye with some incredible mewsic and it was great listening to Andrei and his friend covering 'Heaven's On Fire". What a way to end 2018!

I look forward to our continued friendship in the new year and pray that God blesses you and Mrs. Shady throughtout 2019. Have a rockin' good time, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I am very happy to see you, dear friend. Thank you for coming to witness the annual dropping of the punch bowl at my new year's eve party! :)

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this lineup of young international artists. Korean drum sensation Ami Kim is gaining fame for the enormous size of her kit as much as for her drumming talent.

I don't think you need to worry very much about Sina. She has stated on her channel that she prefers to stick with classic rock and not drift too far toward the extreme metal end of the spectrum. Moreover she seems very level headed to me. In fact most of these young singers and musicians strike me as serious minded and goal oriented. They are focused on their music and developing their talent, not on doing drugs and getting into trouble.

Yessum, you have a good memory. Chris Griffin introduced Andrei Cerbu in that same post on the old blog that featured Sina. It was published on Sept. 1, 2017. Andrei Cerbu and his singing female friend Andreea Munteanu record and perform together often. Quite a few of their videos are posted on Andrei's YouTube channel. Here's their latest collaboration, "Feliz Navidad" -

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fbk3-75zdc

Like you I look forward to continuing our wonderful friendship in 2019, Cathy, and I wish your family many blessings as well. Happy new year to you an thank you for the delightful ecard you sent. I'll see you in 2019 - Year of the Dell Rat! :)

    2. Tom,

You know I came by on Friday and I forgot to respond to your reply to my comment. What's wrong with me? *slap forehead* I appreciate both of your viisit over the weekend, dear friend.

I hope you're right that Sina, as well as the other young rockers are focused on their mewsic more to be swayed by the ellure of drugs & alcohol. Those vices only destroy!

Thanks for sharing the latest mewsic collaboration of Christ & Andrei. I will hop by YT after leaving here to give it a listen. :)

I hope you and Mrs. Shady have a lovely New Year's Eve. Will you stay home or venture out? I'm glad you got the Christmas e-card. What a joy blogging has been over the years and unexpected delight of new friends like you that I've added to my life. Happy New Year to you and Mrs. Shady! 🎊🥳

    3. Hi, Cathy!

You are an early riser, dear friend. "Early to bed, early to rise..."

Prodigies like Sina often come from mewsical families. Their parents expose them to mewsic at an early age and guide them along to help keep them on track. When you are around like minded people, including your peers, you tend to do the same things they so. Sina and her friends make mewsic. I think the future of rock and indeed the future of the world is in good hands thanks to gifted, serious minded young people like Sina, Andrei and the others you see in these videos.

Mrs. Shady and I are staying home tonight and watching Marshall, the Thurgood Marshall biographical film starring Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Boseman, as you might recall, also played James Brown in Get On Up, Jackie Robinson in 42, and the title role in Black Panther.

I am very thankful to have you as one of my closest and best friends, Cathy. Happy New Year to you, to DH and to your whole family. Together let's have a ball in 2019!

  6. Hi Chris. I'm sorry to hear that Shady Seaweed is under the weather, and it's good to know that he has some great backup to keep his blog up and runnin'. It's good to see you again!

I remember Sina from Shady's previous posts, and she has certainly come a long way! "My Sharona" is one of my all time favorite songs, and Sina did it justice with her superb drum skills, just pounding it out so effortlessly! And how about the collaboration between Sina, and friends, Andrei and Johnny Kovacs on the Black Sabbath cover! That was a pretty lengthy number...it took a lot of discipline and strength to keep the pace. BRAVO, kids! Well done!
    * And I see Sina is now officially a rock band member! That is a great accomplishment. She really does a good job with the group on "Player". This one seems pretty challenging with some tempo changes, and Sina stayed strong with it! I have to agree with Cathy K's comment, Chris. Sina is still young, and impressionable. But perhaps she has good sense, and her family is keeping a close eye on her!

Chris, I'm afraid I had to bail about halfway through Tyler Leads' "Call of The Wild"...it was just a little too wild for me. The video was fun, and actually fit the story of this song.

How about that Andrei Cerbu! He's not only cute, he is a great guitarist! I mean, right out of the gate he's good! A successful task he made of "Another Brick in the Wall"! Bringing me to my favorite number, Chris-bringing up the lead for me is Andrei and Andreea with Kiss' cover, "Heaven's on Fire". I believe this song was written for these two kids-what a powerful and sweet voice Andreea has, and plenty of stage presence!. Andrei rocks on that guitar-what a team! If they aren't performing somewhere professionally, they should be! I love them!

Chris and Shady, good job! Shady, I hope you are feeling much better soon! Thank you Chris for standing in and presenting some of the best tunes! I'm sure we'll see you again in the near future.

Shady, I'm sending good, healing thoughts your way with some nice fresh air! Thank you for your hard work, but get some rest! Happy New Year dear friend and Mrs. Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I am very happy to see you, dear friend. Thanks for coming! I apologize for the delay in replying. I am in another city visiting family members that we did not see on Christmas day, handing out presents to the young ones. I had zero time to log on until now, and I need to write quickly because we will be getting together with even more family members later this morning.

I'm delighted to know you remember Sina Doering from the post on the old blog in 2017. I wish I could take credit, but Chris Griffin is the talent scout who discovered her and introduced her in that first post. Sina seems to adapt her drumming to any kind of song, and she plays all types of percussion instruments, guitar, keyboard and other instruments. She is now age 19 and I have every reason to believe she's got her head on straight. To the kids you see in these videos, including the ones you saw performing "Father Christmas" on my previous post, music is their drug, their passion. It shows.

Andrei amazes me. He makes those guitar licks look effortless, and the sound he produces is otherworldly. Given the young Romanian's virtuosity, you'd think he is a boomer age rocker from one of the great bands of the 60s, 70s or 80s. His videos with cute little songstress Andreea are something to behold. Did you watch them do "Feliz Navidad"? The Kiss cover makes me smile with appreciation. By taking a breezy, fun, playful approach to the song and not trying to do it "hard," they got it right and produced a very entertaining video. I agree with the people on YouTube who commented that they are amazed most passersby in the city scenes didn't react to the teenagers' busking. Most walked right on by. Only one group of people stopped and got into the song with Andrei and Andreea.

It's funny. I wrote this post long ago and decided to explain why Chris Griffin was subbing for Shady Seaweed this year, reporting that Shady was "under the weather." Some readers believe I am actually ill, and as it turned out I did come down with something yesterday, a mild bug of some sort that has produced sneezing, runny nose and a scratchy throat. I can testify that I am not "bombed out of my gourd," as Chris stated. I haven't touched a drop of alcohol since 1992. :)

Thank you again for visiting both of my new posts this week, dear friend Suzanne. I hope you will be reunited with Scootie today and enjoy a fun-fulled new year's eve celebration with him. Mrs. Shady and I always pick a movie to watch before the ball drops. Her favorite NYE film is The Hunt For Red October.

Take care, dear friend Suzanne, and happy new year!

  7. Happy New Year Shady! Feel better soon! I remember Sina from previous posts and she's so talented. I won't show this video to my son who loves his drums. It might make him feel a bit lacking in talent! I always think of drummers being dominated by males. Sina would play most under the table! I wasn't crazy about Tyler Leads or the video but you know I'm not a heavy metal fan. The video was kind of violent but everyone exspresses their talent differently! You asked how my Grandkiddo, Addy has become Rae, or sometimes Rae,Rae. Rae is her middle name. That was my Mother-in-law's middle name too. My son Phil loved his grandmother so Addy got her middle name. In my family nicknames abound. We all have them! One day we just started calling her Rae Rae and it stuck! Her sister, Lex, is frequently called Lou. And that's not even her middle name! (You're the first to know that!). I guess I need to do a nickname blog and expose all family weirdness! Well, take care and I hope you have a safe, healthy, and Happy New Year!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you so much for making time for one last visit in 2018, dear friend. You are probably getting carpal tunnel syndrome from commenting on my last three posts. :) I do appreciate it, dear friend!

I wrote the bit announcing that Shady Seaweed is under the weather as a gag, but it actually came true to a certain extent, because I awoke yesterday sneezing and still have a sore, scratchy throat today. Thank you for the well wishes!

I'm thrilled to know you appreciate the drumming of German sensation Sina Doering. I know what you're saying about how your brother would feel comparing his skill level to hers. I played drums in elementary and junior high school, practiced long hours to learn flam paradiddles and other rudiments, but never got the natural knack that Sina possesses. She's a whiz (and I'm still learning how to wave bye-bye). Actually there are quite a few young female drummers uploading rock and metal covers on YouTube. You saw Korean Ami Kim perform at the top of Chris's show. He will be introducing at least two more drummer girls in future posts.

Thank you very much for explaining how Addy became Rae or Rae Rae. That's interesting! I agree it would make a terrific post for you to showcase Addy and Lexi and any other grandkiddos who have one or more commonly used nicknames.

Thank you again for swinging by during your busy holiday week. I look forward to another year of great friendship with you, dear Kathleen (nickname "YaYa" :) Happy new year to you and your wonderful family!

    1. Hi, cat!

Welcome back to your home away from home - Shady's Place! I am very happy to see you, dear friend. Thanks for paying me one last visit in 2018 and sampling the sounds of these rising young rock stars around the world.

The kid who played Pink Floyd on his guitar is Andrei Cerbu of Iasi, Romania. He wasn't born until 2002, but you'd never know it, because he performs like a seasoned vet. I'm glad you enjoyed his guitar solo from "Brick In The Wall."

Thank you again for helping Chris Griffin and me rock out the old and rock in the new. I greatly appreciate your friendship and support, cat, and look forward to sharing more music and memories with you in 2019.

Happy new year and lotsa lubbins to you, dear friend cat! :)
