"Hold Me Tight" - Beatles cover by Evan Rachel Wood
(from Oct. 2007 film Across The Universe)

Kicking off the show, that was me at the school dance singing a cover of
The Beatles' rock & roll ditty "Hold Me Tight." The song was first released
in the U.S. in January, 1964, on the band's second album Meet the Beatles!

Hello again! As you recall from my sneak
preview last year, I'm Lucy Carrigan aka
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, the lead
character in the 2007 jukebox musical
romantic drama Across The Universe,
a movie that gets under your skin and
goes straight to your heart, dazzling
you with wall-to-wall Beatles songs
performed by exciting new artists.
Today I am officially joining
The Shady Bunch as a DJ on
S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
Quite rightly, my new show
at Shady's Place is called
Across the Universe.
Come with me now on this
musical journey and listen
to the greatest music of the
20th or any other century,
the songs of The Beatles!

Now meet The Reos, four brothers from The Philippines who have been
wowing crowds since 2009 with their covers of The Beatles,
Beach Boys, DC-5, Bee Gees and other artists.

Listen as the Reo Brothers do my theme song, originally released
by The Beatles on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band--
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds!"

"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" - Beatles cover
by The Reo Brothers (Nov. 2019)

You just heard The fab four Reo Brothers, the Filipino Beatles tribute band,
covering "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" a song originally released
by The Beatles in 1967 on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
one of the biggest selling albums in history.

Now here's "Something" I think you'll like.
Penned by Beatle George, the song "Some-
thing" was released on The Beatles 1969
album Abbey Road. Late that year it was
a #2 charting smash hit, held back from
the top of the chart only by another
Beatles song, the flip side of the
band's double A sided single
"Come Together."

Listen now to the song that established
George Harrison as a composer on par
with Lennon and McCartney--
"Something."

"Something" - The Beatles
(Nov./Dec. 1969, highest chart pos. #2 Cash Box/#3 Hot 100
(#1 Hot 100 revised) from Sept. 1969 album Abbey Road)

You just heard George Harrison singing lead on "Something,"
the exquisite ballad he wrote. "Something" is the second
most covered Beatles song right behind "Yesterday."
Time Magazine called "Something" the best song
on Abbey Road, and Abbey Road is considered
by some critics to be the best Beatles album.

Lucy in the sky Carrigan coming
to you on S-P-M-M... your #1
source for cool Beatle goldens.
My 7-in-a-row commercial free
Beatles block party continues
now with another song from
the early part of the band's
evolution. It's a cover by
Amy Slattery, the English
singer and musician who
became a YouTube star
uploading homemade
Beatles covers. Watch,
listen and enjoy as
Amy sings- "All
I've  Got To Do!"

"All I've Got To Do" - Beatles cover by Amy Slattery

That was English cover girl Amy Slattery with her version
of "All I've Got To Do," an early Beatles song written by
John Lennon and first introduced in 1963 on the band's
second British album With the Beatles. The song was
first released in the U.S. in 1964 on Meet the Beatles!,
the same album that contains "Hold Me Tight,"
the first song your heard on today's show.

If you're just tuning in, I'm Lucy Carrigan
taking you Across the Universe with the
great sounds of The Beatles and Beatles
cover and tribute artists right here on
S-P-M-M... the station built on
a solid foundation of hits.

Now here's The Classic Rock Show,
described as "The classic rock fan’s
ultimate live Juke box!" For the last
twelve years, this Liverpool based
band has been thrilling audiences
with their stage performances
covering 20th century rock songs.

sisters from Austria who have been

You say "goodbye" and I say "hello, hello, hello!"
I'm Lucy (in the sky) Carrigan welcoming you to
a preview of my new series starting next year at
Shady's Place. It's called Across the Universe...
a salute to the songs of the The Beatles and the
groundbreaking jukebox musical fantasy movie
of the same name directed by Julie Taymor.
Across the Universe is a love story about a
romance between an upper-class American
girl played by Evan Rachel Wood, and a
poor shipyard worker from Liverpool
played by Jim Sturgess.

"They lived without rules.
They loved without fear.
But as the world changed
...so did they."

The movie's title, Across the Universe,
was inspired by the song written by
John Lennon and Paul McCartney
and released in the spring of
1970 on the Beatles 12th and
final studio album Let It Be.

"Across The Universe" - The Beatles
(from May 1970 album Let It Be)

The soundtrack of Across the Universe
contains 34 Beatles compositions in all.
Jim Sturgess, an English singer and
songwriter who bears a resemblance
to both Lennon and McCartney, was
a newcomer to acting when he was
cast as the leading man in the movie.
In this scene, Jim sings "I've Just
Seen A Face," a song from the
U.S. version of the Beatles'
Rubber Soul album.

In my series, I will bring you the original
recordings of The Beatles plus great covers
by up-and-coming artists found on YouTube.
One of the most beautiful Beatles songs
from Across the Universe is "If I Fell,"
and here with a wonderful cover is a
talented young woman who first
entertained you on Shady's blog
Shady Dell Music & Memories.
Watch and listen as English singer
and guitarist Amy Slattery along
with her singing musician dad,

Bluesy, gritty-voiced British rocker Joe Cocker
hit the top of the UK chart in 1968 with a cover
of The Beatles song "With a Little Help From
My Friends." Cocker's cover became famous
in the U.S. as the opening theme song of the
hit TV series The Wonder Years. Joe passed
away in 2014, but is immortalized on film
in this scene from Across the Universe.
Behold the excitement of this flashy
production number as Joe Cocker
and San Francisco based rock
musician Martin Luther cover
John Lennon's "Come Together."

"Never Been To Spain" - Three Dog Night
(Jan./Feb. 1972, highest chart pos.
#5 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

Kicking-off the show,
"Never Been To Spain,"
one of the many hits by
the versatile and very
soulful LA-based rock
band Three Dog Night.
The single reached the
top 5 in the early
weeks of 1972.

Hello again, everyone! I'm Erica Strange. As you might recall
from last year's preview, I'm the time traveling main
character on the Canadian television dramedy
Being Erica.

Welcome to the official debut of
Strange Magic Being Erica
exclusively here on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
I'm excited to be moonlighting as the newest
member of The Shady Bunch DJ staff.

On Strange Magic Being Erica
I'll be bringing you the greatest
soft rock, new wave and pop
love songs of the 70s and 80s.
Sometimes I'll even take you
all the way back to the 60s.
In fact that's exactly what
I'll do later in today's show.

On Being Erica I change clothes a lot,
and I'll be doing the same here on
S-P-M-M, even though I'm doing
a radio show. Go figure!

Okay, let's get back to the music and
the magic. In the summer of 1980,
Olivia Newton-John's musical
fantasy film Xanadu bombed
at the box office... but the
soundtrack album went
double platinum in the
U.S. and was a hit
all over the world.

Here now is one of the songs from Xanadu. Released as a single
just before the movie hit theaters, it shot up the chart and spent
four weeks at number one. Olivia Newton-John sings-- "Magic."

Olivia and this popular English rock band,
Electric Light Orchestra, collaborated on
the hit theme from Xanadu. The previous
year, ELO racked-up their biggest U.S.
hit with a single that peaked in the top 5
and you're listening to it now. It's called
"Don't Bring Me Down."

"Don't Bring Me Down" - Electric Light Orchestra
Aug./Sept. 1979, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

From the late summer of '79, a year before Xanadu, that was ELO -
Electric Light Orchestra - with their highest-charting hit in the U.S.
and second highest charting UK hit-- "Don't Bring Me Down."
By the way, the lyrics of that song are often misheard as
"Don't Bring Me Down, Bruce." ELO co-founder Jeff
Lynne insists he is actually shouting "grooss"...
a word he simply made up!

from the Beantown band's self-titled debut album, and a song
from the soundtrack of the 1979 coming-of-age crime movie
Over the Edge. In the U.S. "Best Friend's Girl" peaked at the
low end of the top 40, but it was a much bigger hit in the
UK where it finished in the top 3 on the chart.

Erica Strange keeping you company on
S-P-M-M. Know what, I really like these
guys - The Doobie Brothers - a group
that's been an important part of the
soundtrack of America for more
than 50 years. Formed in 1970
as a mainstream rock band
behind lead singer Tom Johnston,
the Doobies changed direction in
1975 when Johnston left and was
replaced by blue-eyed soul man
Michael McDonald. Here's the
updated sound of the McDonald
era, The Doobie Brothers with--
"It Keeps You Runnin'."

"It Keeps You Runnin'" - The Doobie Brothers
(Jan./Feb. 1977, highest chart pos. #37 Hot 100/#50 Cash Box)

From the early weeks of 1977, those were The Doobie Brothers with their
top 40 hit "It Keeps You Runnin'"... a single from their 1976 album
Takin' It to the Streets... the first to feature Michael McDonald
as lead singer. The song was used in the 1978 classic rock
movie FM and is also found in the soundtrack of the
Academy Award-winning 1994 film Forrest Gump.

Strange days have found us and, as promised, here I am all the way back in 1969
to introduce the classic folk-rock sound of Crosby, Stills & Nash - a supergroup
that put an indelible stamp on American music and culture. Also known as CSN,
the group was made up of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and
Stephen Stills plus Graham Nash from the UK. Canadian singer and
songwriter Neil Young also joined the act from time to time.

Here's one of the group's best known compositions. Written by Stephen Stills,
the song refers to his former girlfriend, singer/songwriter Judy Collins.
Crosby, Stills & Nash sing-- "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes."

You just heard the tight intricate
harmonies of CSN - Crosby, Stills
& Nash, one of the leading groups
of the late 1960s counterculture -
and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," a song
that made the top 20 in the U.S. and
brushed the top 10 in Canada during
the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holiday season in 1969.

Gosh, Shady just drew his finger
across his throat, the signal for me
to "cut," and that means I need to
wrap up my first official show on
S-P-M-M. Before I forget, I want

songs from your youth on Strange Magic Being Erica. Now
