"Hold Me Tight" - Beatles cover by Evan Rachel Wood
(from Oct. 2007 film Across The Universe)

Kicking off the show, that was me at the school dance singing a cover of
The Beatles' rock & roll ditty "Hold Me Tight." The song was first released
in the U.S. in January, 1964, on the band's second album Meet the Beatles!

Hello again! As you recall from my sneak
preview last year, I'm Lucy Carrigan aka
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, the lead
character in the 2007 jukebox musical
romantic drama Across The Universe,
a movie that gets under your skin and
goes straight to your heart, dazzling
you with wall-to-wall Beatles songs
performed by exciting new artists.
Today I am officially joining
The Shady Bunch as a DJ on
S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
Quite rightly, my new show
at Shady's Place is called
Across the Universe.
Come with me now on this
musical journey and listen
to the greatest music of the
20th or any other century,
the songs of The Beatles!

Now meet The Reos, four brothers from The Philippines who have been
wowing crowds since 2009 with their covers of The Beatles,
Beach Boys, DC-5, Bee Gees and other artists.

by The Beatles on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band--
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds!"

"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" - Beatles cover
by The Reo Brothers (Nov. 2019)

You just heard The fab four Reo Brothers, the Filipino Beatles tribute band,
covering "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" a song originally released
by The Beatles in 1967 on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
one of the biggest selling albums in history.

Now here's "Something" I think you'll like.
Penned by Beatle George, the song "Some-
thing" was released on The Beatles 1969
album Abbey Road. Late that year it was
a #2 charting smash hit, held back from
the top of the chart only by another
Beatles song, the flip side of the
band's double A sided single
"Come Together."

"Something."

"Something" - The Beatles
(Nov./Dec. 1969, highest chart pos. #2 Cash Box/#3 Hot 100
(#1 Hot 100 revised) from Sept. 1969 album Abbey Road)

You just heard George Harrison singing lead on "Something,"
the exquisite ballad he wrote. "Something" is the second
most covered Beatles song right behind "Yesterday."
Time Magazine called "Something" the best song
on Abbey Road, and Abbey Road is considered
by some critics to be the best Beatles album.

My 7-in-a-row commercial free
Beatles block party continues
now with another song from
the early part of the band's
evolution. It's a cover by
Amy Slattery, the English
singer and musician who
became a YouTube star
uploading homemade
Beatles covers. Watch,
listen and enjoy as
Amy sings- "All
I've  Got To Do!"

"All I've Got To Do" - Beatles cover by Amy Slattery

That was English cover girl Amy Slattery with her version
of "All I've Got To Do," an early Beatles song written by
John Lennon and first introduced in 1963 on the band's
second British album With the Beatles. The song was
first released in the U.S. in 1964 on Meet the Beatles!,
the same album that contains "Hold Me Tight,"
the first song your heard on today's show.

If you're just tuning in, I'm Lucy Carrigan
taking you Across the Universe with the
great sounds of The Beatles and Beatles
cover and tribute artists right here on

  1. Good-morning, Tom! I'm glad to see you featured the MonaLisa Twins in this second edition of "Across the Universe with Lucy Carrigan" series. "Something" is one of my favorite Beatles' songs. I think of the cover artists, the Classic Rock Show musicians are my favorite. They are fabulous! Thanks for your tremendous show of support this month as I sketching my way through the alphabet while battling numerous hiccups in our daily life. I hope May is a better month. :) Have a good day, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm delighted to see you as the Early Bird this week, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to check out the first official installment of Lucy Carrigan's Across the Universe series.

Yessum, Mona and Lisa have become frequent flyers in recent years here at Shady's Place, and so has English cover girl Amy Slattery. I'm glad you singled out The Classic Rock Show, because their medley of songs from Abbey Road, performed just as the COVID pandemic was about to sweep across the globe and change our way of life, is indeed fabulous. I watched it from start to finish again this morning and became misty-eyed as the singers and musicians of The Classic Rock Show nailed those songs and brought audience members to their feet in the finale. It's one of the greatest live performances I've ever seen.

I am happy to pledge support to loyal friends like you, Cathy. I truly enjoy looking at your artwork and was happy that you decided to go that route again this year in the A to Z. Thanks again for dropping in and have a happy and Thankful Thursday, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Tom,

I remember Amy Slattery from past posts but felt the MonaLisa Twins did such a better job in this edition. You always find and display such wonderful upcoming talent on YouTube. I was just thinking once I get my James Bond Theme Song BOTB series completed that it might be good to do a Beatle's Biggest Hit Songs BOTB series. See what you did, you inspired me! Thanks for that and so much more, my friend.

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for making time for a follow-up comment, dear friend! I for one will be happy if you do a BOTB series using the biggest hit songs of The Beatles. You will have many great songs to choose from. In my experience, certain Beatles songs are covered by numerous artists while some of their biggest hits are not covered as often. For example, I don't see many covers of "Hey Jude," "I Want To Hold Your Hand" or "She Loves You," but many people cover "Yesterday," "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun."

I feel proud whenever I inspire you and you wind up using my artist and song ideas at CAAC. Thank you again for coming back to chat, dear friend Cathy. I wish you a nice Friday and a productive weekend tackling that pesky task.

    4. Tom,

WOW, here it is May already! I'm so happy the A2Z challenge is behind me. April was such a crazy month. Next year, I will definitely try to not let myself become uncertain about the blogfest and launch quickly into my art design because you just don't know what's coming down the pike as I found last month. I'm ready to move ahead, get some post planned out so I can think about using Beatle songs probably in next year's BOTB line up. Life things are still not fully settled so I don't expect to fall back into my blogging schedule but I do have posts ready to go in cue. Have an enjoyable evening, my friend and thanks for stopping by today to cast your vote in May 1st BOTB!

    5. AOK, dear Cathy!

If you stick with your artwork for the A to Z Challenge, you'll never go wrong in my book, because I just love looking at it and analyzing it. (I forgot to mention that I was expecting Yosemite Sam for your "Y" post. :) If you get a couple of sketches done each month, you'll be in great shape come next April and you will be thanking yourself over and over.

I hope you had a nice weekend. Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful week ahead!

    6. Tom,

Perhaps in a few weeks when things settle down in my life I can think more clearly on next year's challenge. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I can't locate the freezer that we want because it's out of stock. We may be awhile without one. :( Thanks again for your loyal support, my friend!

    7. You got it, dear friend Cathy!

Yessum, it stands to reason that you need a break to rest and gather yourself before starting work on next year's Challenge.

I hope your DS is having a super birthday today!

  2. Here we are, Shady.... as anonymous! (Kelly and Pat) I was crazy about the Beatles in my youth (both the early years and the later), but I don't find myself drawn to it as much as I use to be. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it... I just don't often seek it out. I don't think I knew Harrison wrote Something! He was always my least favorite of the Fab Four. That's not a bad cover of the medley from Abbey Road (my favorite of their albums).

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Well, the great news is that you are here, dear friend(s), but I'm dismayed that you couldn't post a comment in your usual way and needed to go "anonymous." Maybe I can set up the "paw recognition" function so that Pat can instantly sign-in. :) Or, "bark activated" might be another way. :) Thank you very much for putting in the extra effort required to leave your message!

Yessum, I remember you telling me, perhaps in a comment on Lucy's sneak preview, that you aren't as excited by The Beatles as most other people are. I think I also remember you telling me that you don't particularly like covers. I'm glad The Classic Rock Show turned in a performance that did impress you. Maybe now that you know that George wrote "Something," it will maker a difference in his standing with you.

Thanks again for coming early and joining the fun. I will send a trouble report to Blogger, although I have a feeling they are already aware of the problem, because it is apparently widespread. Enjoy your Thursday, Friday and weekend, dear friend Kelly!

  3. My college roommate and BFF is a big Beatles fan, so I watched Across the Universe with her when it came out. Not my favorite by a long shot, but I'm also one of the few people who find the Beatles to be a tad overrated... please don't ban me! HA. There are definitely some songs of theirs that I like, but the Beatles are not a band I would just choose to listen to.

I mainly just wanted to stop by and say hello! We've been pretty busy in my neck of the woods so not much time for the blogosphere lately. I hope you're doing well, Tom!

    1. Hi, Ashton!

Thanks for dropping by, dear friend! It's great to see you!

I'd never ban you, Ashton, because you have been following me longer than any other blogger, and that means a lot to me. You are also entitled to your opinion about The Beatles or anything else. Quick story: Mrs. Shady's son is 22 years younger than me. Recently, we were excited to have him join us and watch Across the Universe for the first time. We had already seen it twice before and couldn't wait to expose him to its magic and wonder. His reaction was similar to yours. I must admit, we were both disappointed and mystified that he was "underwhelmed" by something that resonated so deeply with us, a film that captured our imagination and touched our soul.

Most certainly, it has a lot to do with the age difference. If you were alive in the 1960s, especially if you were coming of age during the decade as I was, if you were there to see The Beatles arrive and transform pop music and culture, you are forever anchored to the excitement of the period. You, as a much younger person, can't be expected to share the enthusiasm of most boomers over the band they embraced and called their own as teenagers. I can't think of a single music act that equalled The Beatles, much less surpassed them, but again that's a boomer's point of view. I feel sad knowing there are people in the world who don't "get" The Beatles the way millions of us did and still do. That's not a put-down. I am genuinely sorry that you didn't have the same opportunity to be blown away by The Beatles all those years ago as a young person in the 60s. It should come as no surprise that boomers consistently say they wouldn't trade places with any other generation. I am sure you could name some of your favorite recording artists and bands and I would be just as puzzled as you are about The Beatles, wondering what all the fuss is about. My folks couldn't understand why I didn't flip my lid over Glenn Miller the way they did ...and so it goes.

Well, it was very kind of you to stop by and say hello, dear friend Ashton. I hope your little Alexis is well and in good spirits, and that goes for you and your husband as well. I see that you have an outfit post running this week. I promise to stop by the next time you post about a topic of interest to men as well as women.

Thanks again for coming over, dear friend Ashton. Take care of yourself and your lovely family and please come back again soon!

  4. Hi Shady! As you know, I grew up in the same era as you and have always loved The Beatles. But one thing that is interesting about my daughters and granddaughters; they all had a time in their teens when they discovered the Beatles and learned their songs. Their friends were doing the same. I don't know what sparked their interest, but they fell in love with the band.

I absolutely loved the movie, "Across the Universe." I've seen it twice, my family has seen it too and enjoyed it so much. Beautifully done.

All those artists who covered the Beatles' songs were wonderful. I'm so glad the music is living on as many of the songs had excellent and deeply felt lyrics along with the music. I love the words in Revolution, and their love songs are so relatable and move my heart. I had never seen the video for, "Something," and think it is beautiful as is the song.
    Thanks for the memories, Shady.

    1. Hi, Belle!

I'm thrilled to see you, dear friend. Thanks so much for dropping by!

As you can tell from earlier comments, The Beatles and their songs have been getting less than stellar reviews. I am thankful to hear from a friend like you who loves The Beatles and can help balance the scale. It is also encouraging to learn that your daughter and granddaughters discovered The Beatles on their own at an early age, learned their songs and fell in love with the band, same and you and I did during our youth in the 60s. Your anecdote reminds us that a person's love of The Beatles is not solely based on age. Many other factors come into play.

It is also gratifying to know that you have seen Across The Universe twice and loved it. Mrs. Shady and I have now watched the movie musical three times and it remains fresh, vital and relevant. Each time we experience the film, we notice and appreciate nuances that we missed in previous screenings.

As I continue to read your thoughts as I go along, I find that you are eloquently expressing everything that I have been trying to express. I am grateful to have someone like you who is willing to drop in and testify about the greatness of The Beatles and the importance of their songs. At the start of 1964, The Beatles lifted Americans out of the doldrums following the assassination of President Kennedy. Their personalities, voices and songs filled us with joy and hope. They made us believe in the power of young people, indeed the power of a single person of any age, to change the world. You and I and millions more have carried the songs of the Beatles in our minds and hearts throughout our lives. They are part of us. They helped make us who and what we are today.

Thank you again for being here for the debut of this Beatles tribute series, dear friend Belle. Keep smiling, take good care of yourself and enjoy the weekend ahead. Bless you!

  5. Oh my goodness what a great selection of music today my friend! I don't remember seeing the video for Something and I just love it. All of these songs rank high on my list of Beatles favorites and the covers do a really good job.

Interestingly, we watched a documentary on the Beatles the other night. It was directed by Ron Howard in 2016 and covered the period that the band toured from 1962 to 1966. It included clips from interviews with them, even from John and George, and it was interesting to hear what they were feeling at the time. I don't think I've seen Across the Universe but now I want to find it and watch it. I think one of my daughters has it so I'll borrow hers. Thanks again for letting me know about the post dear Shady! Don't stay awake to answer me now!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for coming over, dear friend! I just just kidding you about it being close to my bedtime. I've actually gotten into the habit of staying up later at night than I had been for many years. I stay up later and still get up early in the morning, and don't notice much difference in my ability to think and function.

Thanks for joining the party as Lucy (in the sky) Carrigan pays tribute to The Beatles with a little help from her friends. I'm very happy to find another Beatles lover among my followers. I'm delighted that you enjoyed the Beatles' originals and covers in Lucy's volume 1 lineup.

I'd like to see that Ron Howard documentary. Thanks for letting me know about it. Yessum, I highly recommend Across The Universe. It is a completely unique film experience. I believe it will move you and leave an indelible mark as it did on Mrs. Shady and me. While you're at it, watch the 2019 film Yesterday which brings you many more great Beatles songs. Just as Across The Universe inspired this SPMM radio series hosted by Lucy Carrigan, I liked Yesterday so much that it inspired me to create another series hosted by one of its characters.
I have a sneak preview of that show coming up a few weeks from now, so stay tuned.

Thank you again for making time for a visit, dear friend Janet. Enjoy the rest of your evening and I'll see you tamale on Y-Day Friday!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Welcome to Shady's Place, dear friend, where this week Lucy in the Sky is paying tribute to The Beatles!

I'm pleasantly surprised to find out that you own this Across the Universe movie and think it's quite good. Mrs. Shady and I totally agree. I'm glad you appreciated Lucy's first official playlist, both the Beatles originals and the covers. John and George are my favorite Beatles. I also love Disco Tex and His Sex-o-Lettes... just saying.

Well now, the scales are finally tipping in favor of Beatles fans. Thank you very much for letting me know you enjoyed Across the Universe, the movie and the SPMM radio show. Lucy will be back soon with another batch of Beatle goldens, so stay tuned.

Thank you very much for swinging by and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend BB!

  7. Hi Shady! I actually made it to my favorite blog before it's too late! You know I love the Beatles and listening to the covers and the real fab 4 has brought back so many memories and I have to laugh when I realized I was singing all the lyrics with these tonight. I may not remember where I put my keys but I don't think I will ever forget the Beatles songs! The video with George's song was so fun. I love to see the scruffy guys with their gals...except Yoko always gives me the creeps. Sorry. I know she really didn't ruin the group...or did she? Hmmm....anyway, I want to thank you for this fun post and cool covers. I especially enjoyed the Reo Brothers. Have a good weekend. Thanks again for your always thoughtful comments. Keep a good thought for my sister as we received some hard news about her health and it has me pretty worried. I know you always cheer me up! Take care!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm pleased to see you, dear friend. Welcome back to Shady's Place!

I like how you expressed the part about remembering the words to these Beatles songs after all these years. Great songs, the melodies and the lyrics, will stay with you all your life. It's empowering to believe that we can stay young if we hold on to these songs that meant so much to us in our youth. When we listen to them, they produce the same happy feeling, the same joy, the same excitement we felt when we listened as teenagers. Getting those juices flowing has to be beneficial to our health.

Yessum, that video for "Something" gave us glimpses of John, Paul, George and Ringo and the ladies in their lives at the time. I always wonder if The Beatles would have stayed together longer had it not been for Yoko.

Hey, thanks for mentioning the fab four Reo Brothers band in The Philippines. I thought they pretty much nailed Lucy Carrigan's theme song.

Oh my, Kathleen. I'm sorry that you received troubling news about Midge. I will be thinking about her and you and hoping that she'll be AOK. By this time, Midge is family to me, as you well know. Try to have a nice relaxing weekend and keep us posted about her.

Thank you again for making time for a visit and for your excellent comments about this new Beatles series, dear friend YaYa!.

Ringo Starr and Maureen Cox (it's not like I'm on Jeopardy or anything.)

Of the cover songs I like the Mona Lisa Twins "If I Fell" the best. I also like the REO Brothers version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which is neither a far out interpretation nor a slavish remake.

I have a question, maybe a rhetorical question, about "Revolution". I know the Beatles had stopped performing live by 1968, so it that just a video--at the time referred to as a promotional film--tailored to look like a live performance? The lack of a shot of the audience is telling.

    That's all I got.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up late to visit and comment, good buddy!

Judy in Disguise with Glasses (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) welcomes you and I welcome you. We are happy to introduce to you a band that called themselves (wait for it.....) The Beatles.

Hey, thanks for doing the homework and letting us all know the names of the women in the "Something" video. Now I've got one for you. "Lucy," Evan Rachel Wood, star of Across the Universe, was living with and engaged to Marilyn Manson at the time of the film's release in September 2007. The movie was originally slated to premiere in 2006, but release was held up by the complex, laborious editing process.

I'm happy that you liked the covers by The Reo Bros. and MonaLisa Twins. I found the following info on Wiki regarding the promo film made for "Revolution": << Filming for promotional clips of "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" took place on 4 September 1968 under the direction of Michael Lindsay-Hogg. Two finished clips of "Revolution" were produced, with only lighting differences and other minor variations. The Beatles sang the vocals live over the pre-recorded instrumental track from the single version. >> In critical reception of the song itself: << Derek Johnson of the NME described "Revolution" as "unashamed rock 'n' roll" but "a cut above the average rock disc, particularly in the thoughtful and highly topical lyric", and "a track that literally shimmers with excitement and awareness". >>

Thanks again for coming to Lucy's first platter party, good buddy Kirk. I've got a post starting Tuesday and hope to see you then or in the five days that follow. Have a super week!
