Like Call Girls, our Black & White World is a Brain Buster
quiz that tests your music I.Q. and challenges you to

Each volume of the series presents three B&W Girls

The girls have three mystery songs to play for you,
but first you need to guess the correct titles.

Patricia "Pat" Crowley

You can get clues about the song titles by examining the old B&W images
the girls show you and by reading the descriptions and lyrics they provide.

Most of the songs are from the 50s and 60s, but occasionally
the old pictures will be used to introduce newer songs.

We call them Jarring Juxtapositions. (See what I did there?)

This great new Shady's Place series. Get it?  Here we go!

Time to put your noggin to the test, so put on your thinking cap.

Think! Think! Think! After all...

... a headache's better than the shame and
embarrassment of the dreaded dunce cap!

 SONG #1
  Carolyn - B&W Girl
Hi, I'm B&W Girl Carolyn! The secret song I'm set to play is a top 5 hit
by Simon And Garfunkel First released as a single in 1969, it is also
one of the songs on the duo's album Bridge Over Troubled Water
released the following year. Written by Paul Simon, the song
is a first-person lament about the struggle to overcome
loneliness and poverty in New York. Lyrics include:

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

The pictures above and below are the only additional clues you'll need to...

 SONG #2

  Rita - B&W Girl

I'm B&W Girl Rita. See how easy it is to play Name That Tune with us?

The song I'm going to play for you is all about goddess worship.

Debbie Reynolds
To set the mood, I am showing you pictures of
stunning Hollywood actresses of yesteryear.

Millions of men worshipped and adored them...

... and millions of women envied them.

Their faces appeared on the covers of countless celebrity fan magazines.

Teresa Wright
The song I am challenging you to name is
arguably the granddaddy of all doo-wop songs.

If you know your oldies, a big clue is the fact that
the ditty was originally recorded by The Penguins.

Waxed in the summer of 1954 and released at Halloween, the single
by the doo-wop vocal group topped the R&B chart in early 1955.

It is noteworthy for being one of the earliest rhythm & blues records
to cross over and become a major hit on the pop chart as well.

Dorothy Dandridge
The song has been covered by several other artists including
Jacksonville country pop crooner Johnny Tillotson.

Johnny's single, the one you are about to hear, was
released in March, 1960, as the A side of a single.

On the B side was Johnny's cover of another 1955 ballad,
"Pledging My Love," a posthumous hit for Johnny Ace,
the singer who shot himself playing Russian Roulette.

Maureen O'Sullivan
The syrupy, highly romanticized song by The Penguins extols
the virtues of a perfect woman and puts her on a pedestal.

As you continue to gaze at these beauties of the 1930s, 40s and 50s..

Your final clues can be found in the song's lyrics:

I fell for you, and I knew

The vision of your love-loveliness

I hope and I pray, that some day

I'll be the vision of your hap-happiness

By means of his poetic pleas... the boy in the song
hopes to win the heart and hand of the girl he idolizes.

Please be mine

Joan Leslie

My darling dear, love you all the time

I'm just a fool, a fool in love with you

 SONG #3

  Georgia - B&W Girl

Hi, I'm B&W Girl Georgia! Song #3 is a schoolgirl song.

Check out these pictures while I supply clues.

There are at least three great recorded versions of this rock & roll song.

It was penned and first waxed in 1957 by R&B and
R&R singer, songwriter and pianist Larry Williams.

Larry's version, released on a single in 1958, failed to reach
the chart, but has stood the test of time as a genre classic.

The Twin Cities-based blues rock band Crow did a fine job
covering the song on a single released in 1970, but the
record merely Bubbled Under the Hot 100.

The most famous and successful cover is the one
I am about to play for you by The Beatles.

Released in 1964 on the B side of "Matchbox," the Beatles'
Larry Williams cover reached #25 on the U.S. chart.

Your final clues can be found in the song's lyrics.

Well, come on pretty baby,
won't you walk with me?

Come on, pretty baby,
won't you talk with me?

Come on pretty baby,
give me one more chance

Try to save our romance

Well, I used to walk you home,
baby, after school
Carry your books home, too

But now you got a boyfriend
down the street
Baby, whatcha tryin' to do?

Baby, now you're movin' way too fast

You gotta give me little lovin'
Give me little lovin'

Aw! If you want our love to last

  1. You know I'm not good at your quizzes, Shady, but I had fun trying. I'm going to award myself a score of "one and a half". The first song was easy and I couldn't think of the third one at all. As for the second... I picked the wrong "angel"! I had Teen Angel in my mind rather than Earth Angel. So I'm allowing myself a half point for that. 😉

I hope you and Mrs. Shady have a nice Thanksgiving celebration.

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

You, dear friend(s), are the first to cross the finish line this month, meaning that you will take home the lifesize Golden Shady statue. Display it proudly at a prominent spot in your home!

Thanks for coming right over on your weekend to experience Vol. 1 of my new series Black & White World starring Black & White Girls. I'm glad you enjoyed playing Name That Tune with this Brain Buster Quiz and that you correctly guessed S&G's hit "The Boxer." Don't fret. A score of 1.5 places you squarely in the lead, and the French judge awarded you bonus "style points" :)

Thank you again for coming early, dear friend Kelly, and for the kind Thanksgiving wishes. I wish you and your family, including Pat, Fred and Grady, a happy holiday salivation of your own!

It was fun to try though.

I hope you have a nice Thanksgiving.

    1. Hi, Mary & Falcor!

Thanks for coming over on your weekend to become the second place finisher, dear friend! You will proudly wear the silver medal for the next few weeks. I do believe the mischievous blog gremlins have moved on and won't be stealing any more of your comments. We shall see.

I realize you are a lot younger than Shady, and therefore it doesn't surprise me that these songs are unfamiliar. I'm glad you had fun testing your musical knowledge nevertheless.

Stay well and have a happy Thanksgiving, dear friend Mary!

    1. Hi, Alex!

You take third, good buddy! Yes, you heard right. You take third!!!!!

Thanks for joining the fun as I present the first installment of my new Shady's Place series Black & White World, another variation of the Name That Tune game that I have been playing on my two blogs for the last 15 years or more.

Regrettably, if you failed to guess any of the songs, you must wear the dreaded dunce cap. :) That colorized Johnny Tillotson performance comes from the archives of Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. As you might have noticed, the auditorium was filled with gum-chewing teenagers. As they entered the theater, the kids were issued packs of the sponsor's gum and strongly urged to chew during the musical program.

Thanks again for playing Name That Tune and have a happy Thanksgiving, good buddy Alex!

  4. Oh...I know of all these songs which are great but I got..gulp...0. I l9ve how you chose some great film actresses that not too many people would know. I love Theresa Wright who won Oscars a d was in some great films but is not as known as some of the others. These were great and using Theresa Wright reminds me of z podcast I love listening to via YouTube...From Beneath Thd Hollywood Sign. It's great and the man was friends with Theresa.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Welcome to Black & White World, dear friend! Thanks for coming and for bringing along my buddies Harley and Lexi!

What? You correctly guessed ZERO songs? That means you and Mary and Alex must take turns wearing the dreaded dunce cap. :)

I knew you would appreciate these vintage black & white pictures of actresses from the golden age of Hollywood. It will soon be 20 years since Teresa Wright departed this world. As a Teresa Wright "completist," I have seen all of her films and even devoted a scrapbook to her. Teresa was one of my favorites along with Maureen O, and I was excited to find so many excellent early photos of those two along with Debbie Reynolds and the others. As a boy, I regularly I watched My Little Margie (remember Gertrude Hoffman as Mrs. Odetts?) and The Gale Storm Show.

Thanks again for coming to this month's party at Shady's Place. I hope things settle down up there between you and your hostile neighbors. I look forward to reconnecting with you when I unveil my next post around a week before Christmas. Until then, please take good care of yourself and your wonderful animal pals, dear friend BB!

  5. I'm unfamiliar with the Beatles song, but it was good to hear "Earth Angel' and "The Boxer" again. Of the latter tune, I like how even though the song in the main is very soft rock, things get louder and more raucous during the "Li la li... li la la la li la li" chorus, an indication that song's seemingly gentle protagonist may be about to lose control.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for making it over, good buddy!

John Lennon is often lauded as one of the finest rock & roll singers of the 20th century, and those are his rolicking lead vocals on The Beatles' cover of the old Larry Wms. song "Slow Down." I love their version, but my favorite cover is the one I mentioned by the Twin Cities rock band Crow. Yes, "The Boxer" is a long "slow burn" of a song, gradually building in intensity with flourishes near the end. It is one of my favorites by the S&G duo.

Thanks again for stopping in to play Name That Tune and experience Vol. 1 of "Black & White World," good buddy Kirk. Have a great holiday and I hope to meet up with you again next month when I bring you my next opus around a week before Christmas!

  6. You know I'm a dunce most of the time dear Shady but I got 2 correct so I guess I'm improving...only took about 16years of following you! Well, maybe not 16 but lots of years anyway! I'm glad I actually got to your post today and I'm trying to catch up on my blog buddies as I've really been AWOL lately. I'm not even sure why except working and helping Jack get his office closed so he can truly retire. He's been struggling with that idea of really not seeing patients anymore but I know he'll get there once we have all the stuff done at the office. I'm going to post tonight to get caught up and I just want to wish you and Mrs. Shady a warm and delicious Thanksgiving! I'm so thankful for your blog friendship and I hope you are staying warm in your northern local as snow has moved in our area and the artic cold is heading our way next weekend! Happy Turkey Day!

    1. Hi, "Anonymous" YaYa! :)

Thanks for dropping by to test your musical I.Q. in a rousing game of Name That Tune presented by the Black & White Girls of yesteryear.

WOW! If you guessed two out of three songs, you are "a rising star
on the music trivia horizon!" I also believe you are tied for the lead with Kirk (above), who didn't make it clear but apparently achieved the same score. Even if you had been required to wear the dreaded dunce cap, it would most certainly look great on you, Miss Photogenic. :)

Yessum, I read your post and know how many loose ends there are for Jack to tie-up before actually breaking free of his office and practice. You are a real trouper for doing so much to help him with this task.

Yessum, as I stated in my comment on your post, we are getting an early taste of winter in our neck of the woods, same as you guys are. The damp air and strong winds have made conditions particularly raw. The mercury is expected to plunge to the low 20s in the 10-day forecast, the first sub-freezing temps we will have experienced here this season. Today, in advance of the deep freeze, we finally unhooked our two garden hoses and turned off the bib valves in the basement for the winter.

Thank you again for joining the fun at Shady's Place Music & Memories. Thank you also for giving thanks for our long-running friendship. "I second that emotion." Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jack, Annabelle, the Yeti and the rest of your wonderful family, dear friend YaYa!

  7. Hey there friend Shady. I hope I am catching you in your three day window! I had a holiday boutique yesterday and that has been consuming me for the last few days. Did well, at least made the table fee and a few dollars more.
I LOVE the black and white and those old typewriters bring me back to high school for sure. We actually had one at home when I was growing up. Wish I had kept it!
I only got the first song right, knew the second one when I heard it but don't remember that Beatles tune. So I guess I get a C or D. Oh well.
Hope you and Mrs. Shady have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Ours will be small as usual. Just the immediate family minus daughter #1 who is now living in Idaho. Even though the election went the other way, I think we can find one or two things to be thankful for. See you in December?

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm excited to see you (and my buddy Benny), dear and faithful friend! Thanks for coming over for the launch of my latest series based on the Name That Tune game. This time, Black & White girls of the mid 20th century are the presenters.

A score of 1 correct song title vaults you into a tie with Kelly for second place. Second place earns you the silver trophy, so you have every reason to feel proud.

I'm glad your holiday boutique event put you in the black. I've been thinking about you ever since ..... you know what. Hope you are keeping your spirits up. I try to keep my mind off my woes by staying busy with household chores, music, movies, TV and various hobbies. For instance, I recently got interested in "rockhounding" - the hobby of searching for and collecting rocks, fossils, or minerals from nature. As a boy, I was fascinated by the vast array of stones, rocks and minerals and I recently decided to get back into collecting them or at least learning to identify them and learn their origins.

Idaho isn't all that far away. Seems to me, you and Bill could hop in the car and carve a diagonal path up through Nevada to go see your daughter on occasion. We are having Mrs. Shady's daughter and family over for a feast, but they aren't available to come until Saturday. The high temperature that day will only be in the 30s, our first arctic blast of the season. I wish you and my buddy Benny a safe and happy Thanksgiving, dear friend Janet. Please remember to toss Benny a drumstick! Yessum, I will return with my next post a week or so before Christmas, so please take care of yourself and your wonderful family!

  8. Happy belated Birthday to you, Tom! If you gave me a zillion clues I would not a single one of these oldie song picks. The first two tracks in your line up, I recognized but the Beatles' song is an introduction. Fun post, great classics! I hope you and Mrs. Shady have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving, my friend!
