SHADY DELL OWNER
HELEN ETTLINE
DIED FEBRUARY 25, 1984,
39 YEARS AGO TODAY.
Whenever I hear this song, it reminds me
of a very special person, the first lady
of the Shady Dell... Helen Ettline.
Unforgettable, Helen...
That's what you are!
We love you and miss you.
Yesterday was the anniversary of my sister's death and today is the birthday of one of my brothers. (who is still alive and well) Joining you in remember those you've lost (and celebrating those we still have!) ~Kelly (and Pat)

DeleteHi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteIt was a photo finish, and that means the two of you share the Early Bird title this week. :) Thank you very much for coming by to pay your respects to Helen Ettline on the 39th anniversary of her death.
I am sad to think that this week also marked the anniversary of your sister's death. You often menton her, and it is clear to me that you loved and learned a lot from her. At the same time, there is reason for you to be thankful for your brother who is still with you and celebrating a birthday. Happy birthday to him!
Thanks again for being here again this year for my February 25 tribute to Helen. Have a wonderful week, dear friend Kelly!
It really can't be 60 years since I sat at her snack bar. I could use a grilled cheese and fries right now. Jerre
ReplyDeleteHi, Jerre!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, good buddy! Thanks for being here this year as we remember Helen Ettline - the First Lady of the Shady - on the anniversary of her death in 1984.
I hear ya. A few weeks from now it will be 39 years since I last set foot inside the Dell, found John reading the newspaper in the snack bar, asked where Helen was and learned the shocking news that she had recently died. I was at a loss for words. It has also been around 52 years since I sat at Helen's snack counter and ordered "my usual" - a sub, fries, a cherry coke and a pack of Larks. :)
Thanks again for coming by, good buddy Jerre. FYI - the next volume of Saved By The Dell is coming up this week. I'll email you with my usual reminder. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and the week ahead!
I love that song and it could fit so many that we've lost over the years. I can't believe how fast time goes and I'm sure for you the Dell seems just a short time ago and your Dear Helen and John were the center of the fun. I'm sure Helen is smiling from above, taking John's hand and dancing to this lovely tribute. Probably many of your Dell friends who've passed are watching! RIP Helen and know that here at the Shady Dell you are not forgotten. Thanks for introducing her to us Tom and have a wonderful rest of your weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThank you very much for coming over bright and early for this year's tribute to Helen as we remember her on the date of her death.
As you well know, I have been using this same song for years. The uncanny live virtual duet father - daughter performance by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole seems like such an ideal clip for this purpose that I see no reason to change it, just as I continue to use the song "Johnny Angel" to honor John. Let us remember that the world lost Natalie on New Year's Eve in 2015.
Yessum, this is a time for us to remember all of our departed loved ones and old friends who are no longer with us. I am thinking about my wonderful cousin Paula who would have turned 74 this month but took ill and died last summer. We were inseparable in childhood.
Thank you again for being on hand again this year as you have been for the last ten to help me honor Helen Ettline. Have a delightful weekend and enjoy the week ahead, dear friend YaYa!
She lived a great life and affected so many.
ReplyDeleteHi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for dropping in again this year to help me honor Helen Ettline. You summed it up nicely, good buddy. 39 years after she died, Helen is still missed by those of us who knew her, loved her and were influenced by her.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and the coming week, good buddy Alex!
This is Arleen, an old blogger, who left the blogging world a couple of years ago. I was reading some posts from others that I used to follow but was unable to comment. Things continue to get more complicated. I hope you are doing well, Shady, and life is treating you well. As always, I am doing OK and I hope this comment publishes and gets to you.
ReplyDeleteHi, Arleen!
DeleteI'm overjoyed to see you, dear friend! Thanks a lot for looking me up and paying a visit. I certainly remember you and miss you. I always appreciated the posts on your site and your comments here at Shady's Place. It was great to have a friend from back home in Pennsylvania close to where I used to live.
It's fortunate that you didn't have any trouble leaving a comment on my blog. In recent months, other friends have been encountering difficulties of various kinds. In some cases, their comments vanish entirely. In others, I find them sorted to the spam folder. Some friends need to leave comments as "Anonymous" as you did. I am so glad you got your message through to me.
Please remember that I am here. I will always think of you as a valued friend and hope you will stay in touch. I wish you all the best in what remains of 2023 and beyond. Thank you again for stopping by and please take good care of yourself, dear friend Arleen!
Happy birthday to someone who obviously meant very much to you. Nice to see Nat and his kid again.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for starting your work week with a visit to Shady's Place, good buddy! I'm happy knowing that you like the song selection for this annual tribute to Helen Ettline. She truly was-- "Unforgettable."
Thanks again for coming and have a great week, good buddy Kirk!
You are so wonderful in never forgetting this lovely lady who is now known to me and many others. This is a great song and still the best in regards to her duet with her dad who died many years before.i can't believe she too is gone.
ReplyDeleteOn a Harley footnote, I feel horrible because I opened the door to leave and tried to stop Harley hut he bolted out the door. He would not come to Michael and just took off. He went across a busy street and 3 blocks later, a woman grabbed him. If she would not have grabbed him he would have been gone and it was my fault. I'm sick about it.
Hi, Birgit!
DeleteThanks for being here again this year as I remember Helen Ettline on the anniversary of her passing in 1984.
Yessum, it gives me great joy to realize that you and other friends have come to know Helen and John almost as well as I did. I'm glad you like this virtual daddy - daughter duet performed through the magic of modern technology by Nat and Natalie. Born two months after Shady, Natalie took ill and died at the too young age of 65, a few weeks shy of her 66th birthday.
Oh my goodness! That was indeed a close call with Harley. I wonder why he'd want to run away when he has such a good home and people who love him. I suppose he was born to wander, as they say. I am very relieved that he wasn't hit by a vehicle or lost that day. Thank you for sharing the story. I'm glad it has a happy ending. Now that you know Harley is an "escape risk," you will surely be more careful when heading out the door. We always restrain our black kitty because he is also the kind that wants desperately to go outdoors and explore. He is under doctor's orders to stay indoors because he has FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).
Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend BB. Have a safe and happy week ahead!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteThe years pass quickly but time never erases incredible people from our hearts and memories who are unforgettable. Lovely tribute to a lovely lady! :)
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for coming over first thing on your Monday, dear friend!
You got it right, Cathy. The years fly by but, as the Perry Como song goes:
Time can't erase the memory of
These magic moments filled with love
Dell rats loved Helen and she loved us right back. Always there for us with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. Always there to listen whenever we had problems with a boyfriend, girlfriend or our folks. Helen Ettline was indeed a lovely lady.
Thanks again for stopping by to pay respects, dear friend Cathy!
Hi dear Shady - This is one of my favorite songs. I remember watching it for the first time on TV and marveling at how they could do that in the first place (it was 1992) and getting chills listening to it. Great tribute to your special lady.
ReplyDeleteHope you are well. I have been seriously MIA in blogland lately. Hopefully I can get it together for the A to Z in April! It is rainy and windy here in CA. Benny and I get drenched when we walk if I don't time it right. Have a wonderful week my friend!
Hi, Janet!
DeleteI'm delighted that you could come over, dear friend! Thanks for being here on this occasion as we remember Shady Dell First Lady Helen Ettline on the anniversary of her death 39 years ago this week.
Yessum, I remember people being astonished by the Coles' virtual duet when that show aired. In the 30+ years since, technology has continued to advance, and the novelty of such effects has long since worn off.
Yessum, I have been following the news and reading how California continues to be home to the world's worst weather. I'm so sorry you are having a terrible year weatherwise. I hope everything is AOK with your mom-in-law and that she is enjoying her new home. If you participate in this year's A to Z, you know that I will support your effort as best I can.
Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Janet. Please take good care of yourself and my buddy Benny and try to enjoy the rest of your week!
What a nice tribute.
ReplyDeleteHi, Mary!
DeleteThanks for visiting, dear friend! Wouldn't you know it, your comment was sorted to the spam bin again this time, so our battle with the gremlins continues. They even removed three or four of your other comments from weeks ago along with the previously published comments of two other friends! It's frustrating!
I'm glad you appreciated my tribute to Dell owner Helen Ettline. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Mary!
"Unforgettable," is a perfect song for Helen and for people like her. There are a few people in my life I feel that way towards. I heard once that the only thing that lasts forever is love, and I believe it. I know your love towards Helen and John is forever.
ReplyDeleteI also remember seeing Natalie perform this song on TV. She had a lovely voice. I've still been sick off and on, but I am getting better by the week. I hope you and your family is well. Spring is coming very soon, yet it did snow a bit today. But that's normal for Canada. I did hear the woodpecker come back. He loves to stand on the metal roof of the building next door. Early in the morning of course. Lol. I'm glad our roof is not metal and I pity our neighbors.
Hi, Belle!
DeleteI'm delighted that you could be here this year for Helen's tribute. Thanks for coming!
"Unforgettable" does indeed seem to be the ideal song for this annual salute. "To Know You Is To Love You" would also work well, because that's the kind of person Helen was.
I'm glad you remember this special father - daughter duet performed on network television in 1992 by Nat and Natalie, both of them gone now.
I'm sorry you have been sick off and on, and I hope the trend is toward complete wellness. With spring coming soon to Canada, you have much to look forward to. Your woodpecker reminds me of the owls and whippoorwill that sometimes plague us with their eerie sounds at night. We also have woodpeckers down here, and I love to watch them hammering our trees.
Stay well and thank you again for coming down for a visit on this important occasion, marking the anniversary of the death in 1984 of Helen Ettline, the First Lady of the Shady Dell. Stay tuned now for a vintage fashion parade in Part 6 of my series Saved By The Bell.
Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Belle!
