"Way Down We Go" - Kaleo
(Sept./Oct. 2015, highest chart pos. #1
Billboard's Alternative Songs and Rock Airplay,
scenes from Netflix TV series Ozark)
Kicking off the show,
that was the Icelandic
rock band Kaleo with
"Way Down We Go,"
a 2015 hit single from
their first album A/B,
and scenes from our
Netflix crime drama
TV series Ozark.
Hi, I'm Wendy Byrde, wife of Ozark star Marty Byrde and mother of two.
Formerly Chicago residents, we're now living the good life, operating
a restaurant and other businesses in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri,
the Midwest's premier lake resort destination.
A little about me? Well, let's see.
I do some P-R work for political
campaigns, do some lobbying
for a casino project and
dabble in real estate.
Oh, and I also help hubby Marty with his career in money laundering...
help him cover it up and lie to the FBI...
help negotiate deals with a murderous Mexican drug cartel...
and help smooth things over with an equally murderous local
heroine producer and crime boss and his hot-tempered wife.
Yep.... I guess I'm just
your typical American
soccer mom.
And I'm Ruth Langmore (below)... a young Ozark woman who
belongs to a family of (BEEP) low-life white trash criminals.
My diddy's just outta jail and already (BEEP) robbin' gas stations and such.
As for me, I manage a strip club
and (BEEP) kill people when
it becomes necessary. Taking
all that into account, I'm still
the (BEEP) most upstanding
member of my clan and one
of the most honest, morally
straight characters on Ozark.
That should tell you what
you're (BEEP) workin'
with if you decide to
watch the show.
Like me, folks around these parts don't do a lot of (BEEP)
smilin'. Take my neighbor, for example - farm woman
Darlene Snell (below)... wife of the heroin producer
and crime kingpin Wendy mentioned earlier.
This (above) is a pic of Darlene flashin' the (BEEP) biggest,
brightest smile I ever seen on her. Say "cheese," babe...
or "poppy fields." Don't make no difference, hon.
Ruthie and I welcome you
to this sneak preview of
our new radio show
The
Big O
coming soon to
Shady's Place
and S-P-M-M
Retro Radio.
In this case, the big O stands for Ozark, the name of our
wildly popular and critically acclaimed Netflix series.
On our radio show, we'll present songs used in the soundtrack
of our TV show, plus great songs with titles that start
with the letter "O." See how it works?
By now you know that Marty
and I have our hands full
dealing with bad hombres
as we conduct our risky
business in the Ozarks.
Complicating our lives
further is my teenage
daughter, Charlotte.
We discovered that
she's been lying to us,
hanging out with a
local bad boy and
smoking a ton
of weed.

It's classic folk-rock by Midwestern natives Brewer & Shipley from the
spring of '71, the biggest hit of their career-- "One Toke Over The Line!"

Up next, a Leiber & Stoller song
first waxed by The Drifters in 1958.
The more successful version was
laid down in '63 by Dion DiMucci,
the swaggering singer/songwriter
who fronted the 50s vocal group
Dion And the Belmonts. Out on
his own in the 60s, Dion became
one of the most popular American
rock and roll performers of the
pre-Beatles, pre-British Invasion
era. Dion's here to sing one of his
biggest solo hits, a song that made
the top 5 during Christmas season
in 1963. It is also the first of our
featured songs ripped directly
from the soundtrack of Ozark.

you to catch our show
The
Big O
coming real soon
to Shady's Place.
See ya then!
Good morning, Shady. You know I don't watch much TV, so I've never seen this show, but I do appreciate some of these songs you shared today. I especially like One Toke Over the Line and Jackie Blue. -Kelly (and Pat)
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteCurious: Are you guys still unable to leave comments "the old fashioned way?" Just wondering if you tried lately. I reported the problem to Blogger several times. Anyhow, I'm happy to see you and thank you for coming to this sneak preview of another new Shady's Place series The Big O.
I'm very happy that you liked and singled out two of the songs in this feature. One of them, "Jackie Blue," is ripped directly from the soundtrack of Ozark. The other, Brewer & Shipley's "One Toke..." begins with an "O." which is the other gimmick used to supply tuneage for this radio series. I agree that both are great classic rock songs.
Thank you again for coming right over to claim the Early Bird spot this time, dear friend Kelly, and have a great weekend!
I think it is some combination of changes Blogger made and the fact that I use Safari as my browser. (and that's all I use on my laptop and phone) There is only one blog I visit where I cannot comment at all and I think that's because they disallow anonymous comments. Should I ever decide to replace my Kindle with a Fire, I'll try from there and see what happens. Otherwise, I'm fine with commenting anonymously. -Kelly
DeleteWell, I do thank you for going to the extra trouble to leave your comments, Kelly. I wouldn't want to lose you because of interface issues and technical glitches. Thanks for taking time to explain what's going on.
DeletePlease pat Pat and have a lovely weekend!
Though, I haven't seen Ozarks, I've been a fan of Laura Linney ever since Tales of the City and its various sequels. So this series takes place in Missouri, you say? I don't care if they deal in heroin or rob gas stations, but if I find out any of these people voted for Josh Hawley, then I just as soon skip this.
ReplyDeleteI scrolled down to see if I'd have enough time to watch all these videos or save them for later, and then saw Blondie at the end, and decided I did. Great way to end this post, except it's how I BEGAN it, going backwards. Musically, it kind of clashes with all the other selections, but you mentioned strip clubs. In another lifetime, I did go to such places, and recall that Blondie was a popular selection for the girls to do their moves (then again, that band also was popular in the type of night spots featured in Tales of the City--talk about transcending boundaries!)
If I was a rock writer for Rolling Stone in 1970, I think I would have tried coining the term "hillbilly hippie" to describe songs like "Jackie Blue" and "Another Toke Over the Line". Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Doobie Brothers would fit into that category as well. There must be some term to describe that genre, and I just don't know what it is, or knew it and forgot it.
That's all I got.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for taking second place in the race, good buddy!
Yes, Kirk, you and I have been discussing the greatness of actress Laura Linney ever since your post about Tales of the City a week or so ago. As I told you, Mrs. Shady and I hopped right on that miniseries and are enjoying it tremendously. If you're a Laura fan, Ozark is must see. I urge you to beg, borrow and steal - anything to enable you to watch Ozark on Netflix. Wendy, Ruth and Darlene, the three main characters from the series that will serve as "hostesses with the mostesses" in my SPMM radio series The Big O, are all scene stealers on Ozark, all power players. You will be amazed AT all the talent in the show, the excellent writing and directing. One of my favorite episodes is directed by Laura. I said it before, and I'll say it again. Ozark is the greatest TV series of all time, in my opinion. It delivers everything I like in a series, and in great abundance.
Yes Ruth Langmore manages a strip club in the Ozarks. Actress Julia Garner is absolutely brilliant in the role, and won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series as a result. I'm glad you enjoyed the showender "O" song by Blondie, a performance that aired on Dutch TV. "One Toke Over The Line" is listed primarily as a "country rock" song, while "Jackie Blue" is categorized as "Southern rock." I don't think there is very much difference between those two subgenres.
Thanks again for coming for a sneak peek at The Big O show, coming soon to Shady's Place. Have a terrific weekend, good buddy Kirk!
Jackie Blue sure fit that show. I loved that show, it was really good. The characters were good too. Man, those cartel guys were awful! lol
ReplyDeleteRuth was something else though.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteHooray! Your comment went straight through this time, didn't get diverted the the spam folder. Maybe since I found two of your other comments there and published them, the Blogger gremlins finally gets that you are a real live friend, not a robot. Shucks, I had my own problems leaving this reply for you today. A couple of hours ago, just as I was about to click and submit, a lightning bolt from a storm came down and knocked-out our internet. It just now came back on!
Yessum, "Jackie Blue" is the ideal song for the soundtrack of Ozark, and I am very happy to know that you watched and liked that highly acclaimed Netflix series. The drug cartel thugs are scary alright, but I'm sure you'll agree that these three women, Wendy, Ruth and Darlene, are also forces to be reckoned with, and you don't want to cross them if you know what's good for you. Two-time Emmy Award winner Julia Garner had the role of her career to date as Ruth Langmore, a member of the Ozark Langmores crime family. Stick around, because all three of these women will be back as regular hosts of their new series "The Big O," here at Shady's Place!
Thank again for coming over early on day one, dear friend Mary. I'll see you tamale at your place!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteThe Netflix series I've heard of but we dropped the streaming service a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the music featured from the show, though. I recognized all the artists/songs except for the first one. Kaleo reminds me a bit with this song of the artist The Lumineers who did the theme song for the TV series Reign. I'm definitely going to listen to more music by Kaleo and I shall look forward to hearing more songs from the series, Ozark. Have a good weekend, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteI'm very happy to see you on a Saturday, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun as this trio of dynamic women entertains you with a sneak preview of their new SPMM radio series The Big O.
It's a shame you longer subscribe to Netflix and therefore can't watch Ozark. It's my pick as the all time greatest TV series. I think you'd like it because you enjoyed From Dusk Till Dawn, and this had similar elements, including violence and Mexican drug dealers.
Keep in mind that the music for my series The Big o will be a combination of songs from the Ozark soundtrack and songs with titles that begin with "O." Dion's hit song "Drip Drop" is actually used in an early episode of Ozark. I'm glad you enjoyed the dramatic song "Way Down We Go" by the Icelandic rock band Kaleo. However, it is not a song from the OST of Ozark. In this case, it was merely used as a mewsic bed for that Ozark tribute video. According to Wiki, Kaleo's "Way Down We Go" has been used in many other shows. Wiki sez: << The song was used in the movie Collateral Beauty, in a trailer for the movie Logan, in the trailer for the fourth season of Orange Is the New Black as well as the shows Suits, Supergirl, Manifest, The Blacklist, Notorious, Lucifer, Grey's Anatomy, Teen Wolf, Blindspot, Eyewitness, This Is Us, Frequency and The Vampire Diaries. >> Wiki goes on to state that the song as used in << an advertisement for Boots UK, Riverdale, NCIS and was featured in the sports video game FIFA 16. >>
Thanks again for making time for a weekend visit, dear friend Cathy. If you're running a 4M Monday on Sunday, I'll be over to read and listen in the morning. Have a safe and happy weekend!
Hi there! I am visiting as promised. Reading your response to Kirk's above, I didn't know that Tales of the City was a series. I definitely will need to watch that as I have all the books and remember reading the original as a series in the newspaper when I was in high school.
ReplyDeleteJackie Blue is one of those songs I forget about until I hear it. I have not watched Ozark yet but may need to add that to the list as well. Looks like something that Bill might enjoy too.
I actually saw Johnny Rivers at a club in Las Vegas along with Blood Sweat and Tears when I was a teen. I felt very grown up that night as my folks let my little sister and I go on our own while they gambled.
Thanks again for the alert on this most interesting post my friend.
Hi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for coming to The Big O (as in Ozark) sneak preview and platter party, dear friend!
Yessum, there are two Tales Of The City miniseries, one that originally aired in 1993, and another released on Netflix in 2019, with Ozark star Laura Linney playing Mary Ann Singleton in both. If you liked the book series, I predict that you will appreciate the two miniseries. I urge you and Bill to give Ozark a try. As I told you before, it is my pick as the greatest TV series ever. I'm glad you remembered "Jackie Blue" when it started playing. It is taken from the Ozark soundtrack. Notice the nicely restored video clip of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils performing on The Old Grey Whistle Test. The name of that British TV music show was derived from an old Tin Pan Alley phrase. Wiki explains: << When they got the first pressing of a record, they would play it to people they called "the old greys" – doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test >> (and the record was subsequently released to the public).
I get the impression that there are not many Johnny Rivers fans in my group of friends. Therefore, I am pleasantly surprised to know that you went to see Johnny at a club in Lost Wages when you were a teenager. I never saw Johnny live, but I met and chatted with David Clayton-Thomas, lead singer of the second iteration of BS&T. It happened in the mid 80s when I caught David's show at a club in Largo, FL. He and I had drinks afterward and I made sure he knew how music I loved his singing for the jazz-rock band all those years earlier. At that club in Vegas, did your folks "Go Down Gamblin'"? :)
Thank you again for joining the fun and learning about three of the main characters in the Netflix series Ozark. They'll all be back as "hostesses with the mostesses" when I launch their Shady's Place series The Big O. Have a wonderful week, dear friend Janet!
Awww, dang! I wish I saw this before I spent the weekend at Tommy's. Both Tommy and his dad love Ozark and would have loved your series.
ReplyDeleteI'm only familiar with "One Way or Another" and that is one of my favourite Blondie songs. The other ones, I enjoyed listening to, but have to say I really dug the Ozark Mountain Devils. I'll have to check out more songs by them. :)
Now I want to check out this series on Netflix. Have a great Monday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for coming, dear friend! It's never too late to drop in and say hello at Shady's Place.
This post is merely a sneak peek at the new SPMM radio series The Big O starring Wendy, Darlene and Ruth from Ozark. It you like the Ozarks and the tuneage the ladies played in this preview, Shirley you'll enjoy The Big O. :)
Yessum, by all means check out this wonderful series on Netflix. Jason Bateman's tops, Laura Linney will shock and amaze you, Julia Garner steals scene after scene, and there are loads of other top rung actors and actresses on the show. Hands down, it's the greatest TV series I've ever watched... and that's saying a lot.
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were a "two-hit wonder" band. Their only other substantial hit was "If You Wanna Get to Heaven," a #25 charting single released in 1974, a year before their biggie "Jackie Blue," a song from the Ozark soundtrack.
Thanks again for coming to the Big O platter party, dear friend JM. Have a super week ahead!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI'll have to ask Tommy if he enjoys the Big O. If he does, maybe we can binge watch it. :) A holiday weekend is coming up.
I can't wait to see the rest of the series. That's interesting about the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and sort of sad that they couldn't break out of 2 hits. While two is better than one, I enjoy their sound. Maybe that's why I've never heard of them.
Have a great week ahead as well, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteYessum, please run this post by Tommy and see if it sparks his interest in watching Ozark. The opening video containing scenes from season 1 of Ozark will give him a good idea of how dark and violent the series is.
You won't know what to expect in future volumes of this Big O series because the soundtrack of Ozark is diverse. It contains 60s oldies like Dion's "Drip Drop," songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s and even ,millennial songs by well known and little known artists. Add to that the other type of songs that will be featured in the series, songs with titles that begin with the letter "O," and you can see that it will be an eclectic mix and never predictable.
Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady, I enjoyed all the songs but "One Toke Over the Line" was my favorite. It's such a happy tune. Loved seeing Dion, so I looked him up. He is still out there singing away. Good for him! I think "Jackie Blue" came in second for me though. Liked the song and the guy's voice. I recognized Blondi's song and it's a good one for sure.
ReplyDeleteWe have Netflix, but I've never watched Ozark. It looks like a very good show for the topic, like Sopranos and Breaking Bad. I had to stop watching both of those because of personal reasons, but the writing and acting were amazing. Dan and I are going to binge-watch, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" today. That's more our speed. Lol. Thanks for the fun, Oh, I forgot to mention I laughed out loud at your jokes, "a typical American Soccer Mom," and "Darlene with her smile..." I recognized Darlene from somewhere. I think she gets around. Thanks again!
Hi, Belle!
DeleteThank you for coming all the way down from B.C. to Ozark territory, dear friend! :) Wendy, Darlene and Ruth welcome you and say "Howdy!"
I appreciate knowing that you liked the song lineup in this sneak preview of The Big O. Thanks for revealing that Brewer & Shipley's country-rock hit was your favorite. How about that nicely restored video of Dion lip syncing his latest hit "Drip Drop" in 1963? I searched for a long time and was never able to find out which TV show Dion was appearing on when that performance was filmed. If you recognize the set and can give me the answer then please let me know. I am always curious about such things. For example, I've been discovering on YouTube some great musical performances pulled from old episodes of The Red Skelton Show, a source that would not have occurred to me. The song by Dion and the one by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils are both taken from the soundtrack of Ozark, the show I am promoting in this series. Available on Netflix, Ozark is filled with violence and profanity, and yet it is all realistic and true to the situations and characters. Over a span of 70 years, it stands as the greatest TV series I've ever watched. Yessum, Ozark is a lot like Breaking Bad, and if that series turned out to be too intense for you to watch, then I respect that. Mrs. Shady and her son would probably love to watch Obi-Wan Kenobi, but we are not subscribed to Disney +. For me, that show would be a hard pass because, unlike most people, I never got into Star Wars. However, I can highly recommend Seth MacFarlane's sci-fi comedy drama The Orville, a series inspired by Stark Trek and Next Generation. It's a hoot. All three of us watch it and love it.
Belle, it is the highest compliment of all for you to tell me that you laughed out loud at the jokes I planted in the mouths of my characters. If I can make you laugh, distract you for a few minutes from the break realities of the world we live in, and leave you with a smile on your face when you log-out of Shady's Place, then I have achieved my goal. My primary objective in blogging is to promote happiness and goodwill. Thank you very much for the encouragement, sweet Belle! Enjoy the rest of your week, and look for my next post coming up two days from now on Thursday the 30th. God bless!
Hi Shady! I read this post and even commented but it wouldn't go through so I'm back. All's well here in Chicago and Midge is doing well recouping. And Hope was very happy to be home and Annabelle and her are getting along great. So although I've never seen this show, it looks interesting and the music picked for the post is familiar! I'm sorry this is short but I didn't want to not say hello and let you know I was here enjoying the tunes and the post! Have a good week Shady!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining the fun, dear friend! I'm sorry to learn that you and certain other friends are having difficulty leaving comments. I don't understand why that is happening. I have not changed my settings. I just checked and your comment did not go to the spam folder or to "awaiting moderation." Thank you for trying again until you succeeded!
I am very relieved to learn that Midge is doing AOK following her latest procedure. Thanks for letting me know. I am also pleased that you took my sweetie Annabelle along with you for an adventure in Chicago and that she and your niece-dog Hope are getting along well. I'll bet Hope was happy to get home to her mommy.
Yessum, Ozark is a fine show. As I told friend Belle (above) is is violent and there's lots of swearing, especially on Ruth's part, and yet it's a show about family loyalty. It has heart and it has soul. It is very well written, acted and directed. I urge you to give it a try.
Thank you again for finding a way to leave a comment. I appreciate it! Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend YaYa, and please drive safely on the trip back home to Ashland!
I’m hoping my comment takes this time. I tried 5 times before. I’m sorry for not being here sooner. Visiting friends, walking Harley( I give him big hugs from you to him) plus falling asleep because I am not sleeping well due to pain have all contributed to falling behind in my blogging. I would love to see Ozark because I like Laura Linney and love Jason Bateman who is really so good in comedy and drama. A child star who has done good.
ReplyDeleteLoving the songs you showcased here. Each one is great and loved listening to all of them.
Hi, Birgit!
DeleteThanks so much for dropping by, dear friend! I am dismayed to learn that you, like several other friends, are suddenly having difficulty leaving comments. I will again check my settings and report the problem to Blogger. Beyond that, there's nothing I know of to do. I apologize and thank you for taking extra time to get your comment published.
Yessum, please give my new BFF Harley some lubbins from Shady, followed by a ribeye steak. Tell him it's on me! I am very sorry to learn that chronic pain is robbing you of sleep at night. I know all about that, dear friend.
I hope you will give the hit Netflix series Ozark a try. Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner lead a wonderful cast in a compelling drama that will leave you spellbound. Yessum, Jason Bateman is a versatile actor who made the transition to adult roles and today is very highly regarded by fans, critics and his peers.
I'm glad you enjoyed the tuneage from the Ozark soundtrack as well as the additional "O" songs that will be featured in this series. Thanks again for the extra time and effort required to comment. Have a great day and I'll see you tamale, dear friend BB!
