RED LIGHT!

Listen carefully to the instructions.

Examine the following list of song titles that contain the word "RED."
As you see, the name of the artist is included next to each song.

"1,2,3 Red Light" - The 1910 Fruitgum Company
"Red Sails In The Sunset" - Tab Hunter
"Little Red Riding Hood" - Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs
"Little Red Rooster" - The Rolling Stones
"Little Red Corvette" - Prince
"Red Dress" - Sugababes
"Red Red Wine" - Neil Diamond
"Red Rubber Ball" - Bobby Vee
"99 Red Balloons" - Nena
"Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" – Gene Autry
"Red River Rock" - Johnny And The Hurricanes
"Red Hot" Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs
"Red House" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Now, you must correctly answer the following questions:

1) Which song is based on a children's game that is the
first game played in the hit Netflix miniseries Squid Game
2) Which song was originally recorded in German?
3) Which is a hit instrumental?
4) Which artist name is incorrect and does not
go with the song title?

RULES:

* Players who correctly answer all four questions
will get a cookie and advance to the next round.

* Players who get any of the questions wrong will be eliminated.

* Players who cheat by scrolling down for an answer will be eliminated.

* Players who refuse to participate in the game will be eliminated.

 SCROLL DOWN.

LET ME REPEAT
THAT INSTRUCTION.

Here again is the list of song titles followed by the questions and answers:

"Red Sails In The Sunset" - Tab Hunter
"Little Red Riding Hood" - Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs
"Little Red Rooster" - The Rolling Stones
"Little Red Corvette" - Prince

"Red Hot" Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs

1) Which song is based on a children's game that is the
first game played in the hit Netflix miniseries Squid Game?
ANSWER: "1,2,3 Red Light"
2) Which song was originally recorded in German?
ANSWER: "99 Red Balloons" was originally the German song "99 Luftballons."
Released as a single in its original German form, the song was a chart-topping
international hit that also reached #1 on the U.S. Cash Box chart. Ironically,
the English language single failed to make the chart in the U.S.
3) Which is a hit instrumental?
ANSWER: "Red River Rock" is an instrumental version of the folk/cowboy
song "Red River Valley."
4) Which artist name is incorrect and does not go with the song title?
ANSWER: Bobby Vee is the incorrect artist for the song "Red Rubber Ball."
Bobby Vee had a hit with a song entitled "Rubber Ball." The Cyrkle had
the hit with "Red Rubber Ball."

If you correctly answered all of the questions above...

... congratulations. You will survive to play the next game.

If not... you will now be eliminated.

If you are eliminated, don't expect to leave with
a consolation prize and a copy of the home game.

  1. Good morning Shady! Right off the bat I recognized that Red Rubber Ball was not sung by Bobby Vee (or at least was not the original that I remembered). I have not seen Squid but my son has and told us about the Red Light/Green light game. I also guessed that 99 Red Balloons was the German song. The only one I didn't get was the instrumental. I'm pretty pleased with my answers and I swear I didn't look first!

Hope you have a terrific weekend. i have a boutique coming up on Sunday so I will be busy in my craft room for the next few days but wanted to pop over and say hello to you. Thanks for being such a loyal visitor to my spot too.

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! A "West Coast Early Bird" is the rarest of the rare, and I thank you for starting your day with a visit to Shady's Place.

I'm glad you accepted the challenge and played RED LIGHT... Game 1 of my new series SQUID PRO QUO based on the wildly popular Netflix miniseries Squid Game which I highly recommend.

Looks like you did pretty well in the game. You got the Bobby Vee/Cyrkle answer correct and also knew that the song by Nena was originally recorded in German language. Apparently you also knew that "1,2,3 Red Light" was another correct answer in the game.

Three correct is a great score but, unfortunately, you needed to answer all four question correctly in order to win the game and avoid being eliminated. You were unable to do that, and now I hear the polite female announcer's voice on the P-A system:

      "Player #293 is eliminated." :)

I don't want to be a spoiler, and so you'll need to watch Squid Game to find out exactly what happens when a player is eliminated. :)

I hope you have a successful day Sunday at the boutique. Again, it was very nice of you to come so early. You played well. Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend, dear friend Janet!

  2. Oh, my. I'm eliminated any way you look at it!! For the record, I did answer one correctly. (which song was originally recorded in German)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for coming over early and playing SQUID PRO QUO: RED LIGHT, dear friend!

I think younger players like you will be at a disadvantage in these games, because most of the songs will be from the boomer years, not the 1980s to present. You did a good job picking "99 Red Balloons" as the single that was originally released in German. However, since you needed to correctly answer all four questions, the pink soldiers are coming for you and they have no choice but to eliminate you. Once again I hear the voice of the polite female announcer on the P-A system:

      "Player #88 is eliminated." :)

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly. I highly recommend Squid Game if you have Netflix. It's totally bingeworthy! Have a great day and a safe and happy weekend!

    2. I appreciate that you think of me as young, but I'm most definitely a boomer. I am pretty limited on my music knowledge after about 1985. ;)

    3. AOK, Kelly! I suppose everybody seems young compared to Shady. :) I'm sorry if I said something dumb there. We'll see how you do in Game Two: GREEN LIGHT which is already in the pipeline. Those "green" songs will again be mostly older boomer era hits. Maybe you can start cramming now to boost you chances of winning that round. :)

Thanks again for your friendship and support, dear friend Kelly!

  3. Oh boy, I am not got the first 2 right. The first answer sounded like something from a kid’s game show and I know the German version Of Luft Balloons really well. The othe 2 I guessed and got wrong. Oh well, I’m surprised I got 2 right.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm pleased to see you, dear friend! Hope you're feeling better and gaining your strength back. Thanks for coming early on day one to bust your brain on RED LIGHT!... the first game in my new series paying tribute to the hit Netflix miniseries everybody seems to be buzzing about - Squid Game. It's a show I highly recommend.

Congratulations on getting half the questions right! Unfortunately, to win the game you were required to correctly answer all four questions, and you failed to do that. Having lost the game, you must now be eliminated.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #314 is eliminated." :)

Thanks again for popping in and trying your luck, dear friend BB. Have a safe and restful weekend!

  4. Ha ha, That’s a fantastic “Shady” rendition of Squid Game! But please, please don’t eliminate me! I beg of you! If your viewers are not familiar with squid games, I’m begging them not to play! For they will not know what “ Eliminated” REALLY means!!!! LOL!

OK, I will admit that I got the last two wrong. I did not know that “Red River Rock” was an instrumental. Plus, I didn’t know that Neil Diamond sang “ Red Red Wine”. The only version I knew was UB40!

I really enjoyed the show and looking forward to season two!

    1. Hi, Toni!

I'm delighted that you could join me for the debut of my new Shady's Place series inspired by the Netflix miniseries that you and I have both bingewatched - Squid Game. Thank you for the compliment on my version of RED LIGHT - GREEN LIGHT, the first game played in the exciting Korean action drama. How do you like the fan artwork I found? As you see, many artists are fascinated with Squid Game and its characters, including "Younghee," the giant size doll that presides over RED LIGHT - GREEN LIGHT and tries her best to catch moving "statues."

There's no use begging other readers not to play SQUID PRO QUO, because players who refuse to take part in the games will be eliminated. :) I'm happy that you got two of the answers correct and happy that you learned about "Red River Rock" and Neil Diamond's original version of "Red Red Wine," even though the latter was not involved with the questions. I take it you also didn't know that The Cyrkle recorded "Red Rubber Ball" and that it was not Bobby Vee. Since you did not achieve a perfect score, you must now face the dire consequences.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #466 is eliminated."

I'm so glad you dropped by to play, dear friend Toni. Take care and please join us for the next episode when Younghee shouts "GREEN LIGHT" to start GAME TWO. Yessum, I do hope Squid Game returns for a second season. Thanks, Toni!

  5. Well, Nena originally did "99 Red Balloons" in German. In fact, I remember both the German and the English version playing on the radio. I never knew Tab Hunter to be a singer, so I'll guess that's wrong. "1,2,3 Red Light" sounds like a game so I'll say that's the game. I'll guess "Red Dress" is the instrumental. Let me scroll up and see how I did.

Two out of four. So I'm eliminated. Does that means you don't want me here for round two?

I never heard of Squid Game. Sorry if this is too heavy a question, but does it have something to do with AIDS? Those people in pink hoodies with the white triangle on black seems like a play on the famous SILENCE = DEATH poster that ACT-UP employed as a logo.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for joining the fun on day one good buddy! You were a brave warrior, sir, setting aside your fear and taking part in the dreaded RED LIGHT game, the first contest in my new series SQUID PRO QUO based on the megahit miniseries Squid Game, the most watched show on Netflix. Trust me. "Younghee," the adorable 50-foot doll that presides over the game, will hurt you bad if you don't follow her instructions to the letter. It doesn't help to serenade her with "Hello Dolly."

Good for you, Kirk. You knew the answer to the question about the German language song, and you correctly guessed that the song performed by The 1910 Fruitgum Company referred to the children's game played in Squid Game. Two out of four ain't bad, good buddy, but you needed four out of four to win the game and avoid elimination.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #145 is eliminated."

Yes, good buddy, I want you here to play game two, GREEN LIGHT, in which all of the songs will have the word "green" in the title. The rules state that you only remain "eliminated" until the game ends (until the post gets bumped from the front page), at which time you will magically come back to life and go on to play another day.

Oh my goodness. I see that you have a Part 2 to your comment. I am absolutely out of space on this reply form, so I need to move on to the next. BRB.

    1. Good eye, Kirk! I followed your link to the SILENCE = DEATH symbol created by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power. I can't find any evidence that the uniforms worn by the pink guards on Squid Game are in any way related. Instead, I found this explanation:

<< The circle represents workers, the triangle represents soldiers, and the square represents managers. In Squid Game, workers, soldiers and managers only carry out their given tasks and nothing else. Otherwise, they would be shot dead. >> Here is a link to an article that describes how the elaborate Squid Game complex operates like an ant colony:

      https://thesmartlocal.com/korea/squid-game-facts/#:~:text=The%20circle%20represents%20workers%2C%20the,they%20would%20be%20shot%20dead.

I highly recommend Squid Game. It's the most bingeworthy miniseries I ever watched. Thanks again for coming right over, good buddy Kirk. Have a great weekend!

  7. Tom,

Hokey smoke, I got 3 out of 4 right! What in the world is going on here? Either my coffee is working or someone whispered the answers in my ear and since DH is at work, it has to be the coffee working. :D I totally forgot about playing 1,2, 3 Red Light when I was a kid until just now. Thanks for the reminder. Great fun post. We don't have Netflix any longer but I've heard of this miniseries, though. Thanks for joining me for some giggles and grins with my Friday Funnies, my friend. Have a funtastic weekend birthday boy!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm so glad you could join me on DH's day off, and play a friendly game of RED LIGHT! with Younghee, the jumbo size killer doll on the Netflix miniseries Squid Game, a show I highly recommend and hope you can watch someday.

Wow, for as young as you are, you really did a great job with the challenge, dear friend. Three out of four is a great score. The problem is... that you needed to get all four answers right in order to win the game and avoid Younghee's wrath. Listen... I hear something!

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #220 is eliminated." :)

I'm glad this post brought back memories of the childhood playground game RED LIGHT - GREEN LIGHT. I also thank you for the kind birthday wishes. Have a wonderful Friday and a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy!

    5. Hi, Kelly!

That's very sweet of you, dear friend! We just finished the turkey feast Mrs. Shady prepared. We celebrated two birthdays today - my birthday and my son-in-law's birthday. He's here visiting from across the state along with his wife (Mrs. Shady's daughter) and our grandson. We also counted this as our family Thanksgiving feast because we won't see these family members on T-giving day. There's a lot of turkey left over, and I wish I could feed some of it to my buddy Pat.

I totally agree with your philosophy, Kelly. I might be 72 now, but in my heart and mind I'll always be 16. Glad you enjoyed remembering "Sixteen Tons" by Tennessee Ernie Ford. There's a brilliantly remastered TEF performance video on YouTube. You should watch it!

Thanks again for being such a great friend, Kelly. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

As you can see, you were not the only player to be eliminated in game ome. Every player has been eliminated so far! :)

Yessum, I had a special birthday in some respects, but early in the day I learned that a beloved family member and lifelong friend was gravely ill and admitted unresponsive to hospice care. Sadly, tragically, she passed away this afternoon. Therefore, at this hour our whole family is in mourning. Such is the roller coaster nature of this life.

I wish you a safe, restful and happy Thanksgiving week, too, dear friend Cathy!

I appreciate your sharing some background that enables me to know you better, dear Mary. I was on the shy side myself, so I can relate. Just look at us now! :)

I'm sorry you were stumped by the game of RED LIGHT! staged by killer doll Younghee from the hit Netflix miniseries Squid Game. Please watch the show if you subscribe to that service. It's packed with pathos and spectacular thrills.

You might be heading for the exit, but the pink minions have detained you. Rules are rules and, sadly, you must now be eliminated.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #333 is eliminated." :)

    1. Hi, YaYa!

It's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to test your musical I.Q. and play an exciting game of RED LIGHT! with Younghee, the dangerous doll from Squid Game, a wonderful TV miniseries I urge you to watch on Netflix.

I'm a little surprised that you, a boomer, didn't know most or all of the answers to these four music trivia questions involving songs of our youth. The first question was practically a giveaway, because the song "1,2,3 Red Light" obviously makes reference to the childhood game of RLGL most of us played in which "statues" attempt to advance on the "curator" or "it" person and tag him or her to win the game. Not knowing precisely how many answers you correctly guessed, I don't know whether to congratulate you on doing so well or offer my condolences. Regardless, even if you got only one answer wrong, your fate is sealed, dear friend.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #106 is eliminated." :)

Thanks again for trying your luck at RED LIGHT! I hope you will do better when the series returns with game two: GREEN LIGHT!

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend YaYa!

  10. Hi Shady, I didn't do well on this, I have no clue! I have never heard of the Squid Game, nor have I seen the characters.

I think the song in German is "99 Red Balloons"...it's the only one I could even guess at. So, I'm guessing I am out of there! Pretty clever game idea, Shady!

Hope you are doing well, and getting ready for a nice Thanksgiving feast. I have all of my foods except for a few items. Scootie is out of school all week, and is ready for it!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming to play RED LIGHT! - game one of my new series SQUID PRO QUO based on the runaway hit Netflix miniseries Squid Game. I highly recommend that you watch that Korean show if you have Netflix. You will really get involved with the characters, and the sets and action are spectacular.

As a card carrying boomer, you should remember the "1,2,3, Red Light" song by the 1910 Fruitgum Company, a big hit in the nursery rhyme pop category. Given your knowledge of music from our era, I am also surprised that you don't remember "Red River Rock," the instrumental by Johnny And The Hurricanes based on "Red River Valley." Maybe you will have better luck when colossal doll Younghee presents GREEN LIGHT! in the next episode of the series, but since you failed to get all four answers correct in this game, your fate is unfortunately sealed.

Polite female announcer voice on P-A system:

      "Player #57 is eliminated." :)

We are having the Thanksgiving feast at our house today, and we have a house full of company. I just broke away long enough to reply to your kind comment. Today is my birthday and also my visiting brother-in-law's birthday. Mrs. Shady prepared a turkey and all the trimmings and baked two pumpkin pies for the joint b-day celebration. We are also counting this as T-giving dinner because we won't be able to get together with this family (Mrs. Shady's daughter's family) on the actual day because they live across the state.

I wish you and Scootie a joyous Thanksgiving as well, but hope to see you before then. Thanks again for joining the fun and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

Scootie showed me the Squid Pro Quo game on Netflix, he has watched it before. I do remember seeing the advertisements for it now. I usually watch crime stories on Netflix and some movies.

I'm delighted that you came back over, dear friend! Thanks for providing more info on how you scored in the game. I admire your honesty, the fact that you didn't cheat. Although you were eliminated in game one, you will surely rise again to play game two: GREEN LIGHT! next year.

I'm surprised that Scootie has already watched Squid Game and yet you were unaware of the show. Like you, I usually watch crime dramas and movies, but I gave Squid Game a try and was enchanted by the drama, pathos and spectacle. the miniseries is cleverly written and brilliantly directed.

I'm glad you found a way to visit me. Please hang in there, I don't want to lose you. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and have a great T-giving week ahead. I hope you'll be able to stop in and check out my next post on Tuesday. It's another edition of my series That Was Then - This Is Now.
