In the fall of 1969, The Flying Machine
was way up there where the air is rare,
in the top 5 on the U.S. chart, with
the feel-good ditty-- "Smile A Little
Smile For Me (Rosemarie)."

This band put Niles, Michigan, on the map with their debut single "Hanky Panky,"
originally released in 1964 on that city's Snap record label. Fast forward to the
summer of '69. Tommy James And The Shondells were riding high with a
string of hits and soaring toward the top of the chart with this song
co-written by Tommy. Here's "Crystal Blue Persuasion."

"Crystal Blue Persuasion" - Tommy James And The Shondells
(July/Aug. 1969, highest chart pos. #2 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

That was one of the songs most often
heard playing on the radio during the
celebrated summer of '69 - Tommy
James And The Shondells peaking
at #2 on the charts with "Crystal
Blue Persuasion." Many listeners
thought the song was about drugs,
but Tommy insisted he got his
inspiration from Bible verses.

"Two Divided By Love" - The Grass Roots
(Nov. 1971, highest chart pos. #8 Cash Box/#16 Hot 100/#2 Canada)

An ear-pleasing blast from your past, those were The Grass Roots, the LA-
based band that started out doing folk rock, but had their greatest success
in the late 60s and early 70s cranking out good time pop-rock singles like
that one, "Two Divided By Love," a record that penetrated the top 10
on Cash Box and went all the way to #2 in Canada in the fall of 1971.

Natalie Teeger keeping you company
on S-P-M-M, where all the cool oldies
come to play. I'm doing my best to
turn that frown upside down and
put Array of Sunshine into your
day. How am I doing so far?

Here's another fellow who did pretty
doggone well for himself after first
making his mark with a famous band.
It's Paul McCartney, you might have
heard of him, joined here by wife Linda
and their band Wings doing a 1978 single
that went top 5 in the UK and did even
better stateside, going all the way to the
top of the chart.  Here are McCartney
and Wings-- "With A Little Luck."

  1. I know and like the majority of Natalie's offerings today, any of which would make a good ear worm for the day. (I think Crystal Blue Persuasion is going to be the "sticker")

Bill Chase is a new-to-me name. I'll have to check him out a little more closely.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for being the Early Bird again this week, dear friend! I very much appreciate it. I'm sorry to be late replying to your comment, but I needed to have a routine medical procedure done this morning quite a distance from home. I just now returned and logged on.

I'm pleased that you know and like most of the songs Natalie T picked for her second sneak preview. I agree that there's ear worm material on her play list. "Crystal Blue Persuasion" played in heavy rotation on the radio during that super summer of '69. At the time, I was working for a construction company doing all sorts of hot dirty outdoor jobs like digging ditches to lay sewer pipe, steam cleaning heavy excavation equipment, painting buildings and applying roof sealant in 100 degree heat. During my lunch break, I sat in my VW Beetle, turned on my transistor radio and listened to top 40 hits like that one. Wonderful memories.

The Chase band made a splash with the jazzy number "Get It On" in the summer of 1971. They charted two other singles later that year, but they both sold poorly and peaked in the 80-85 range on the chart. A single released the following year merely Bubbled Under. Then, tragically, Bill and three of his band mates were killed in a Minnesota plane crash in the summer of 1974.

Thanks again for swinging by so early, dear friend Kelly!

    1. Hi Alex!

I checked the rule book, good buddy, and since you arrived here at Shady's Place only one minute after Kelly, you qualify as co-Early Bird!!! You and Kelly will share custody of the life-size cardboard Shady cutout!

Yes good buddy, when you're feeling low and your spirits need a boost, you can't go wrong choosing a song by yacht rockers Captain & Tennille. Let's also give props to composers Sedaka & Greenfield for specializing in the type of songs that are ideal for Natalie Teeger's radio shows.

Thanks again for hustling over early, good buddy Alex!

  3. I never watched Monk. I know it was very popular but I never watched it.

I don't know some of these songs but I do know Crystal Blue Persuasion. I remember hearing that on the radio sometimes when we would go on vacation when I was a kid. We would take the car and drive from California all the way to Utah and Colorado every Summer so I heard a lot of music back then.

I hadn't heard Two Divided By Love, before but those hair styles and those mustaches sure did bring back some 70's memories. Everyone even a couple of uncles looked like that back then. lol

With A Little Luck, was very popular back then. Paul McCartney was very popular whenever he had a new song come out.

My mom loved The Captain & Tennille so I knew that song for sure. I'l sure that song was popular when it come out too.

I don't know that Santana song but I know a lot of their other stuff. I like how Carlos Santana had done a lot of music with other singers and made some great songs over the years.

    1. Hi, Mary!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun as Natalie Teeger, Mr. Monk's girl Friday (and every other day of the week) spreads Array of Sunshine into your life with feel-good music galore.

"Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a great summertime song. Check my reply to Kelly (above) to learn how it is linked in my mind to that epic summer of '69 when I worked for a sewer contractor - slash - construction company. Thanks for sharing your childhood memories of that Tommy James song.

Good observation about The Grass Roots, Mary. Brilliantly restored vintage clips like "Two Divided By Love" offer a clear look at the hair and clothing styles of the period along with the type of tuneage that was popular.

Yessum ex-Beatle Paul did alright for himself. I hope that pristine video can hang on at least five days without being removed by the YouTube gremlins. In my experience, McCartney videos are particularly vulnerable to their whims and often vanish while embedded in my posts.

Many a mom loved the kid safe - mother approved duo The Captain And Tennille. I am thankful that so many YouTube channels are lifting performances from Sugarman's Midnight Special, remastering and restoring them and uploading them to YouTube for music bloggers to use.

I ran out and bought that self-titled Santana album shortly after it was released. To me, every song on it is a "greatest hit," including Natalie's showender, "Jingo."

Thanks again for coming over early, dear friend Mary. Give my buddy Falcor some of those Kibbles and enjoy the rest of your week!

It's nice to see you, good buddy! Thanks for coming to Natalie Teeger's second sneak preview of her new radio show Array of Sunshine - coming next year to Shady's Place!

Mrs. Shady favors Sharona, but I like Natalie more. She is credited with saving the series and helping it run many seasons longer than expected. BTW, I am also a "Mary Ann" man. :)

You seem to remember and like Bill Chase, a talented musician and band leader who left us too soon in a manner reminiscent of Buddy Holly.

Thanks again for dropping in, good buddy John!

  5. Ah, Natalie. What a Girl Friday she was, and at first I thought no one could replace Sharona. Wrong! I gobbled up the Monk series, and cried when it went away. Maybe Netflix will still have it somewhere.

Thanks for Smile and Little Smile for Me and Fresh-Faced Paul singing one of the Beatle classics. Snapped me back in time and got my feet tapping...actually, up and moving. Better than today's jazzercize.

Thanks for stopping by, dear friend! I've been trying to write a reply for hours, but Central Florida is experiencing a widespread cable and internet outage. Every time I start composing a comment or reply it goes out again. I will try to get this reply published.

I'm delighted that you watched and enjoyed Monk. Mrs. Shady and I are working our way through the series for approximately the 4th time. We watch it on Prime. You're right about Natalie. The future of the series was in doubt when Sharona left, but Traylor Howard's Natalie Teeger was a big hit with fans and the series was saved. I prefer the Natalie episodes over the earlier ones.

I'm glad you enjoyed listening to The Flying Machine and watching baby-faced Paul and wife Linda.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Cheryl-Lee!

  6. Natalie truly is a breath of fresh air...she is cute and pretty! I enjoyed her personality and character on Monk...I miss that show! Randy was even cute and funny in his own way. The cast all blended well to make a great show!

"Get It On" is a cool song with great speed! It is fast paced, and the vocals don't miss a beat. Love all of the instruments. This makes me think a little, (just a little), of Blood Sweat and Tears' style, only better!

The Grass Roots are cool, but I didn't realize THIS COOL! I always liked "Two Divided by Love", but not so much until I watched this video TWICE! The guys are having a good time with the song, and, they have good hair! Natalie, sure knows how to pick them!

Paul McCartney and Wings were a fun, and talented group. "With a Little Luck" is so sweet. I liked watching this one with Linda, as I always admired her. Paul has such a wonderful, unique voice. Captain and Tennille were a very cute and talented couple. Tennille has a wonderful voice, and "Love Will Keep us Together" is a perfect song for her-I also liked this video.

Wow! The power of music videos is so compelling. I like a lot of songs more than I did after seeing the performances! The Flying Machine is one example, as I wasn't very fond of "Smile a Little Smile For Me". I know it was popular, and, after having seen the video, I do appreciate it for the great vocals and arrangement.

"Crystal Blue Persuasion"...I believed Tommy James wrote and recorded this song especially for me! I love Tommy and the Shondells, and this song always made me a bit emotional, I guess, for different reasons. "A new day is coming", and "Look to your soul, open your mind". This song reminds us, warns us, and advises us of past, present and future things to come. Aside from it being an emotional song, it is beautiful. My favorite in this post.

2nd favorite-Santana! I didn't even know who these guys were until I saw "Woodstock" in the late 60's. I didn't know this song was called "Jingo", haha, just that it is one of my favorite Santana songs. The drummer is "Boss"!

Thank you Natalie and Shady for a great group of artists and their fantastic music, back in the day when you had to have a great singing voice. I know that's not nice, and I have noticed the past couple of years, good voices are coming back our way.

It's cold and rainy in Fort Worth, and I'm okay with it. Thank you for a very great post. Take care, dear friend, Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

As I told Cheryl-Lee (above), today has been a nightmare. Around 2 pm, Central Florida was hit with a massive, widespread cable and internet outage that lasted until a few minutes ago. I am backed up and stacked up, didn't get very much done today in the way of blogging. I hope I can get this reply published before I lose internet again. (Update - the internet went out AGAIN as I was in the middle of writing this!!!)

I'm delighted to welcome you back to Shady's Place, dear friend. You've been missed! I know you have a lot going on over there on your side of the screen. I hope you and Scootie are in good health and in good spirits.

Yessum, I agree that Natalie was a great character on Monk, and so was Randy Disher. Are you gonna run out and buy his band's Randy Disher Project album? :) It's hard to believe that Ted Levine, who played straight arrow Captain Leland Stottlemeyer, also played the demented serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. He also played a brutal, sadistic, misogynistic character on Big Sky, the ABC TV series I am currently watching.

Yessum, you hit the nail on the head. The David Clayton-Thomas/Blood Sweat & Tears sound was red hot in 1971, and the Bill Chase band took it to the next level with "Get It On." It's such a shame that Bill and three of his band members were killed in a plane crash, bringing to mind the plane crashes that took Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, The Bar-Kays, Rick Nelson and other music stars.

Yessum, Natalie knows how to pick em, and I was thrilled that she found that pristine video of The Grass Roots performing their math-themed hit "Two Divided By Love." I always thought The Grass Roots deserved more top 10 and top 5 hits and fewer top 20 and top 30 hits.

I like the way Paul McCartney, The Kinks and Tears For Fears, to name three English music acts, like to bring children into their videos. Ever notice that? I was also stunned by the HQ sound and HD video on that clip of Captain & Tennille's performance on The Midnight Special. I assume that's Hal Blaine on the drum kit behind them. The famed drummer for The Wrecking Crew died two years ago shortly after turning 90.

I'm glad you left Shady's treehouse with a more favorable impression of the "Rosemarie" song. It helps that the YouTuber who uploaded it "enhanced" the original studio recording, beefed-up the bass and added subtle layers of instrumentation to the mix. Most of his productions make the originals sound better than ever before, and he always gives us a marvelous slideshow of album art, 45 rpm record labels, promotional pictures, etc. while the songs play.

Yessum "Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a song with religious overtones, as are others written and recorded by Tommy James. It's a shame that many fans thought the record was "cool" and bought it because they assumed the song was about a drug induced experience.

Yessum, I could sit and listen to that Santana album all day long and not get tired of it. The band's sound still seems fresh and vital today. Some bands that were big during the same time frame sound stale and dated by now.

We are enjoying cooler weather here, and I suppose we have you to thank for that. It wouldn't hurt if you'd send some rain our way, too. Thanks again for making time for a visit and for your usual splendid comments, dear friend Suzanne!

  7. Hi Shady! I wish every time I heard a song played here from my teen years I'd look in the mirror and see me back in that day! Ha! Anyway, lots of good memories from the tunes today. When I watched "Wings" and saw the dancers I swear there was one guy who looked like a ringer for George Harrison! Some of the others were super young or I'm just super old and they looked young! I always watched Captain and Tennille on TV. She has the biggest mouth...I mean that in a good way! I'll look forward to Natalie next year playing my kind of music and bringing me back to my youth! 1. Hi, YaYa!

Welcome to Natalie Teeger's second sneak peek, dear friend!

I doubt that our reflections in the mirror will ever magically show us as we looked as teenagers, but I sincerely believe that listening to the songs of our youth and watching the slideshows, vintage film clips and videos associated with them enable us to feel young again and promote health and healing.

Yessum, I was just mentioning to Suzanne (above) that you often see children in Paul McCartney videos and in the videos of other English acts. It seems to be a common characteristic of English pop and pop-rock acts.

Seems like every time you turned on the TV during the mid and late 70s, Captain and Tennille were performing on one show or another. It's a shame that "Captain" Daryl Dragon passed away at the too young age of 76. He will soon be gone three years.

Yessum if this type of music is to your liking, then stay tuned for the official debut of Natalie Teeger's Array of Sunshine tentatively scheduled for next September 4.

Thanks again for coming to Natalie's platter party, dear friend YaYa. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  8. I never heard the term "yacht rock" before. Is there some socioeconomic dimension to the music that eludes me, or is it simply because the Captain is called the Captain and he wore a captain's hat? Anyway, Toni Tennille had one of the great, well, "pop" voices is I guess how most people would categorize it, but it was very guttural compared to other female pop stars of the day, and very suited for more straight-ahead rock. The road not taken, but I'm not complaining. She and her then-hubby came up with something all their own.

Then there's Paul McCartney. His voice sounds more poppish than Tennille's. But then the Beatles wed pop and rock like no one else (except for maybe the Beach Boys) and lot of that is Paul's doing as a composer. Had his voice been more like John Lennon's, I wonder if he would have composed music differently.

Bill Chase is the Find of the Day for me. "Get It On" may have charted right outside the Top 20, but I never heard it before.

As for all the other songs--groovy, man!

    1. Hi, Kirk!

I'm happy to see you, good buddy! Thanks for being here for Natalie Teeger's last sneak preview before her new SPMM radio series, Array of Sunshine, official launches next year.

From what I gather, "Yacht Rock" is a relatively new term that describes a genre of smooth, light pop-rock recorded and performed by a group of artists that often collaborated. Here's a Rolling Stone article I found for you to read:

      https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/sail-away-oral-history-of-yacht-rock-49343/

It would have been nice if Toni T. had occasionally done the Pat Benatar thing and rocked a little harder to give her street cred beyond pop singer. She had the pipes to do it. Shucks, I could imagine her doing the Pat Boone thing and releasing an album "In a Metal Mood."

Yes, The Beatles were equally adept at performing pop and rock, and as a solo artist, fronting Wings, collaborating with Michael Jackson, etc. Paul exhibited his preference for smooth, mellow pop-rock and "Silly Love Songs," whereas John went deeper, writing and recording mystical, philosophical and anti-war songs.

I'm thrilled that the Chase band is the highlight of the post for you this time around. In future volumes, Natalie will bring you the best of the late 60s and early 70s horn bands, so stick around.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Natalie's song set. Thanks again for staying up late and dropping in on day one, good buddy Kirk. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  11. Good afternoon, Tom!

It's a beautiful sunshiny day in east Tennessee. We decided to hang around the house since we got to go the mountains on Monday. I thought I'd pop over to see what tunes you had spinning on your blog. I'm happy to report all of your song picks, with the exception of the last feature by Santana I'm familiar with. In the early 70s I was a huge Captain and Tennille fan. I remember watching their variety show as a young teen. 1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for breaking away from your hiatus to pay me a visit.

You are enjoying beautiful sunshine in East Tennessee, but here in Central Florida, it's one of the darkest and dreariest days in recent memory. It's been raining hard all day long, our property is flooded and a cool/cold front is being ushered in. It's a sloppy mess, but I look forward to the brisk air.

It's good to know that you are familiar with all of the songs on Natalie's playlist except the showender by Santana, a top 40 hit from this time of year in 1969. I owned the album that the single "Jingo" was released from, and therefore it has been quite familiar to me ever since I was in my late teens.

I'm glad you know and have fond memories of The Captain And Tennille, a duo that had their own TV show (as you mentioned), appeared on other music variety shows like The Midnight Special, and was heard frequently on the radio throughout the 70s. Theirs is good-time music, nothing harsh or heavy, and they were enormously popular.

Thank you again for setting aside time for a visit and for your generous comment, dear friend Cathy. Now go back to having fun on your vacation! :)

  12. Smile a Little Smile is new to me but I loved listening to it. All these songs are great and I recall them fondly especially the Wings one. I remember The Captain &Tenille being on all the variety shows back then and who would have thought Muskrat Love could be a hit. The instruments with Santana is always great and the trumpeter in the first video is excellent. I enjoyed listening to all.

I started bleeding less so, I didn’t go to the emergency. My hubby did say if it doesn’t ease then he will bring me but it seems to be easing up. I'm so glad you enjoyed hearing The Flying Machine's hit for the first time. It helps that it is a recently enhanced recording, making it sound better than it did when it was popular in 1969.

Yessum, thanks for mentioning "Muskrat Love," a song penned and first recorded by Americana and Texas country legend Willis Ramsey. It is such an unlikely pop hit that I think The Captain And Tennille were wise to wait until they were established hit makers before releasing it as a single. Like three of their previous singles, "Muskrat Love" topped the Easy Listening chart and went top 5 pop, but it took three more years for the duo to match that achievement, finally doing so in early 1980 with "Do That To Me One More Time."

I'm thrilled that you give approval to the instrumental workouts on the first song and the showender.

Regarding my other post, I'm pleased that you have seen Spader's sick flick Crash. Mrs. Shady and I were just watching Spader's Alan Shore and Shatner's Denny Crane on Boston Legal last night. They were blissfully dancing with Shirley Schmidt's (Candice Bergen's) cheerleader costume!!! Those two are a hoot... that's what they are!

I hope you enjoy your walks in the brisk fall air. Please take good care of yourself so that you can heal completely. My thoughts are always with you, dear friend BB. Thanks again for coming by and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
