Hi, I'm Daisy Skye Johnson aka "Quake," one of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
You might recall my first appearance on Shady Dell Music & Memories in 2014.
I'm back and proud to announce that, starting next year, I will be joining
the The Shady Bunch DJ squad here on S-P-M-M Ultrasonic Radio.

Today I'm bringing you a preview of my
new show Power Surge. I'll be playing
great rock sounds of the 60s, 70s and
80s. Every show is a 7-in-a-row non-
stop block party. More music with less
talk means more time to rock, so let's
keep our bods moving while the guys
of Foreigner play-- "Head Games!"

"Head Games" - Foreigner
(Dec. 1979/Jan. 1980, highest chart pos.
#12 Cash Box/#14 Hot 100)

From Christmas 1979 and the early weeks of 1980, that was the British-
American band Foreigner with the title cut from their third studio album
Head Games. The album made the top 5 on the Billboard Top 200
and the single reached the top 15.

SPMM means more rock with less tock,
and here are those rowdy rockers from
the UK to set 'em up and knock 'em
down. Rolling Stone Magazine called
this hit "supernatural Delta blues by
way of Swinging London." From '68,
The Stones-- "Jumpin' Jack Flash!"

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" - The Rolling Stones
(June/July 1968, highest chart pos. #1 Cash Box/#3 Hot 100)

From the summer of '68 those were The Rolling Stones with "Jumpin' Jack Flash,"
a single that topped the Cash Box chart but peaked at #3 on the Billboard survey,
denied the number one position by much softer sounds entrenched at the top -
"Mrs. Robinson" by Simon And Garfunkel" which spent three weeks
at #1, and "This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Alpert which
held the top spot four weeks in a row.

If you're just tuning in, I'm Daisy Skye, one of Marvel's
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, producing an earquake with my
lineup of rock songs on this preview of my new show
Power Surge on S-P-M-M Radio, the number one
station for a rock 'n' roll nation.

Up next another iconic rocker and another epic single from that same
year - 1968. It's a song originally recorded by folksinging and
songwriting legend Bob Dylan and released on his
1967 album John Wesley Harding.

The song became even more famous the following year when it was covered by
another legend, psychedelic blues rocker
Jimi Hendrix and his band, and released
on their double album Electric Ladyland.
Are you experienced enough for this?
Feel the power surge as The Jimi
Hendrix Experience performs--
"All Along The Watchtower!"

"All Along The Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix Experience

Here's another relic from that rockin'
year 1968, a song that played on FM
radio and home stereos around the
same time as the Hendrix classic
you just heard. Let the power
surge thru you as Steppenwolf
does-- "Sookie Sookie (Sue)!"

"Sookie Sookie" - Steppenwolf
(Oct. thru Dec. 1968, B side of "Magic Carpet Ride")

That was the LA-based Canadian-American band Steppenwolf with "Sookie Sookie,"
the flip side of their smash hit "Magic Carpet Ride," a single that lasted 16 weeks
on the chart, longer than any of their other records. "Sookie Sookie" was used
in the soundtrack of the chilling movie Bob Fosse's Star 80.

You're feelin' the Power Surge with
Daisy Skye, and its time for some
classic album rock on S-P-M-M's
FM dial. It's the big bold sound of
The James Gang, a Cleveland rock
trio led by Joe Walsh. The James
Gang Rides Again with a track
from that 1970 album-- Woman!"

"Woman" - James Gang
(from July 1970 album James Gang Rides Again)

From the 1970 album James Gang Rides Again, Joe Walsh and his
James Gang band with "Woman." Five years later Walsh joined
The Eagles and he also had a successful career as a solo artist.

That wraps up this special preview. Thanks for being here.

of super heroes in action on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I also invite you to join me in 2021
when I blow you away with another
earquake of classic rock tuneage on
the official debut of my new show
Power Surge. To play us off, here's
Evol Walks, a female-fronted hard
and heavy rock band formed six
years ago on The Gold Coast,
Queensland, Australia, and
now based in L-A.

Leah Martin-Brown and her band drew
inspiration from AC/DC, Joan Jett and
Led Zeppelin. In late 2016 Evol Walks
released this fuel-injected cover of
"Spirit In The Sky," the 1970 hit
by U.S. singer and songwriter
Norman Greenbaum.

I hope by now this Skye's got you in a rockin' spirit. This is Daisy Skye
saying see you next year right here on S-P-M-M Ultrasonic Radio...
where the bold sound of pure unadulterated rock prevails!

  1. Hard to mess up Spirit in the Sky. And she didn't.
1984 might have been their biggest selling album, but I'll always consider 5150 their best. Never was a fan of Roth and thought Hagar brought a whole new vibe and energy to the band. Then poor Gary Cherone only got one shot at lead until Roth came back.

    1. Hi, Alex!

Congratulations, good buddy. You're the early bird! Thanks for coming over for the sneak preview of Daisy Skye Johnson's new SPMM radio show.

I'm happy to know you appreciated Daisy's showender - the cover of "Spirit In The Sky" by the Aussie band Evol Walks. I prefer the antics and attitude of Diamond Dave to the Sammy-led period of Van Halen's evolution.

Thanks again for coming by, good buddy Alex, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  2. Hi Shady! Retirement is allowing me a little earlier comment time! I'm writing here as Spirit in the Sky is rocking. You know I'm not a big fan of hard rock but these were good and I can't listen to Jimi Hendrix without thinking of my son Phil who's a big fan and also a good guitar player in his own right. I've never watched S.H.I.E.L.D but I'm sure Jack has. I better get back to my project I've started today and not be a lazy bones! Arnie is at the Vet and hopefully his surgery today goes well. Poor guy. He knew something was up when he didn't get fed this AM! Have a good Tuesday and I'll try and send some of our cool temps your way!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for hustling over early, dear friend! Yessum, I surely am noticing the difference in arrival time since you retired. Seems like you have nothing better to do than spend "quality" time in the Shady. :)

You appear to have enjoyed or at least tolerated Aussie band Evol Walks doing their cover of the 1970 hit by Normal Greenbaum. Thanks for letting me know that son Phil is a Hendrix fan as well as a good guitarist in his own right. I'll bet he has played "Watchtower" a time or two. If Jack has watched Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. then please tell him to BOLO for the return of Daisy Skye Johnson aka "Quake" next year when she starts her brand new SPMM radio show Power Surge. Daisy vows that every playlist will produce an "earquake."

Yessum, I remember that Arnie is getting his leg operated on today and I wish my good buddy a speedy and complete recovery. Toto always had a sixth sense when it came time for a trip to the vet. She knew she was going somewhere and got very excited until we arrived at the vet's office and she discovered to her dismay that she was getting shots, etc. I think mainly she just loved to get out of the house and ride in the car.

Thanks for promising to send cooler weather our way. I'm gonna hold you to it. :) Thanks also for making time for a visit and for your cheery comment. Prayers for Arnie and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend YaYa!

  3. "Rides Again" is a great album. Side 1 electric, side 2 acoustic, and for a little band they had a big sound.

A lot of Stones songs are almost impossible to play and make them sound right until you learn that Keith Richards tunes his guitar in open G. This is one of those songs...

"Sookie Sookie" is the first song on Steppenwolf's live album. Haven't heard it in ages.

And, Leah Martin-Brown and Evol Walks shot a whole bunch of new life into one of my favorite songs.

Good set this week! Sorry I'm a bit brief...

    1. Hi, John!

It's a pleasure to have you over, good buddy! Thanks for dropping in to experience Daisy Skye's Power Surge "earquake" - a sneak preview of her new show which will officially debut in 2021.

I owned that James Gang album and played it heavily. Thanks for the insight about that Stones classic. "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was a jukebox hit at my hangout the Shady Dell, evidence that the times were changing, with harder and heavier rock nuggets overtaking traditional sweet soul sounds that had been the Dell's bread and butter.

Every time I hear "Sookie Sookie' I get a chill because I am reminded of the carnival ride scene in the early minutes of Star 80, the movie based on the case of Playboy model Dorothy Stratten who was murdered by her jealous boyfriend.

I'm glad you appreciated the Evol Walks cover of "Spirit In The Sky."

Thank you again, John, for taking time to let me know how you liked Daisy's preview. She'll be back with more classic rock tuneage next year!

  5. Oh, wow.... this is an excellent lineup today, Shady! You started off with one of my favorite music videos and a song that brings back some incredible memories. (and you might remember I'm team Roth when it comes to VH)

All along the Watchtower is my favorite Jimi Hendrix song. While I didn't have the 45 (to get it as the B side, I remember Sookie Sookie being on the Steppenwolf Live album, I think.

I'll even concede the cover at the end is done well.....

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for dropping in, dear friend! Looks like we were reading each other's posts at the same time. :)

I'm thrilled that you appreciate Daisy Skye's lineup of classic rock nuggets. I'm glad you and I are on the same team - Roth - in discussions of the history of Van Halen. I'm also delighted that "Jump" triggered incredible memories. I hope you mean incredibly good memories. "Jump" is also memorable for me. The single was hot on the radio in late March, 1984, the week I moved from Pennsylvania to Florida to begin a new chapter of my life. I have now lived here longer than I lived in PA.

I am also pleased that Daisy selected your favorite Jimi Hendrix song for her preview show. I became familiar with "Sookie Sookie" by purchasing the 45. The meaning and context of the song changed completely the first time I heard it used in the soundtrack of the highly disturbing movie Star 80 starring Eric Roberts. Gosh, you even like the Norman Greenbaum cover by Leah Martin-Brown and Evol Walks.

I'm always happiest when good friends like you leave here entertained, Kelly. Thanks again for being here and enjoy the rest of your week!

  6. I don’t have really good memories of Van Halen. My son loved them and would blast their music as loud as it would go. I had four kids, was going to school and had a job. All I wanted was some quiet. The Stones, though, well, I never minded their music played loud, but today, I might turn it down a smidge.

    1. Hi, Arleen!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for setting your dial to SPMM Ultrasonic Radio and listening to the classic rock gems on Daisy Skye's playlist.

Daisy's new show Power Surge will cover rock anthems of the 60s, 70s and 80s along with cool covers of songs from those decades produced by 21st century artists like the female-fronted Australian band Evol Walks.

Thanks for giving me some background on your life, Arleen. I didn't know you had four children and needed to juggle school and a job. I take my hat off to you. In my youth I liked The Stones but not nearly as much as The Beatles.

I'm happy you joined the fun and let budding SPMM deejay Daisy Skye Johnson give you an earquake. She returns next year with more rockin' relics of the past in volume one of her Power Surge program. I hope you are having a great week, dear friend Arleen. Wow! You chose some of my favourite songs! I had fun jamming and grooving to Steppenwolf, Rolling Stones, Steppenwolf and Foreigner. You provided a great soundtrack this afternoon.

I love "Spirit in the Sky" and was impressed with Evol Walks' cover. She has amazing vocals and they captured Greenbaum's playing and vocalizations perfectly. I'll have to see if Evol Walks have other covers... I hope you revisit them in another post.

Seems you found a lot to like in Daisy's batch of tuneage. As you noticed, I used this preview to set the parameters for her new show Power Surge which will bring you the best of rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

I'm delighted that you dig Evol Walks and their cover of "Spirit In The Sky." I'll be checking their channel regularly and bring you other worthy covers in future volumes of Daisy's show.

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I'm happy that you decided to follow along and sample the sounds emerging from Andrei's Garage located in Jassy, Romania's second largest city. Andrei has a harem of talented female vocalists who take turns recording cover performances with him backing them on guitar, sometimes with other band members joining in on the session. That crew is putting out some great covers of songs originally recorded by artists in the U.S. and the UK.

As Jerry Blavat always says, "Keep on rockin'... 'cause you only rock once!" Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

Yes! I noticed that, the different female leads. They're all great. Andreea is the one for the really heavy metal songs and I really think she's great for that genre.

I hope you have a great Sunday dear friend. Look forward to what you will be rockin' this week. :)

    5. Hi, Jessica Marie!

My favorites are Andreea M. and Beatrice F. Andreea has demonstrated great versatility, able to authentically cover pop, rock power ballads to harder rock like Kiss covers. Beatrice mainly covers old time American rock & roll, but recently she covered The Beatles as well.

I won't be rockin' at all this coming week because, starting first thing in the morning, I will be taking a short blogging break. I will hopefully be back Wednesday, Sept. 2. Stay well until we meet again, dear friend JM!

Fabulous mewsic set this morning! For the first time I can say I used headphones while listening. :) DH & I bought some Jabra 45H bluetooth headhphones for each of us. They arrived yesterday. I'll be ear testing them extensively today. The only songs new-to-me are "All Along The Watchtower" and "Sookie Sookie". Here's something of interest for you, in October I'm using two different artists "Spirit In The Sky" covers in BoTB . I believe I recall coming across Evol Walks in my research. Anywho, loved your mewsic. Thanks for putting me in a boogieing mood, my friend!

I have been using mine for several years and the difference is remarkable, pure enjoyment. It's good to know you will be plugged in from now on when you listen to SPMM Retrosonic/Ultrasonic Radio.

I look forward to your "Spirit" band battle coming up in October. I want to let you know that I need to take a break from blogging starting this weekend and running until Sept. 2 (not a very long one). 1. Hi, Jerre!

It's great to see you, good buddy! Thanks for setting your dial to SPMM and sampling the classic rock sounds in this sneak preview of Daisy Skye's new radio show Power Surge.

I just now did a Google image search and took another look at that car to refresh my memory. Rolling down a city street, that p-mobile would certainly grab attention. It's no wonder the album stirred controversy and had some critics calling it sexist. One of the songs on that album, "Ride With Me," is already scheduled to run in a future edition of Daisy's show.

If you are nostalgic for classic rock of the late 60s thru early 70s, then stay tuned because Daisy's got you covered. Most of the recordings played on her show (including many nicely restored performance clips) come from that time frame. So keep checking your listings for the official debut of Power Surge coming in 2021.

Thanks again for dropping by, good buddy Jerre!

  10. Dear Friend Shady: Hope you are staying safe. We have been hit by fires all around us and while we are not in danger, the smoke in the air is thick and we are getting falling ash. My hubby and I saw Van Halen a few years ago with Diamond Dave and he was still doing his dancing act. He was a bit too wordy for us that night, telling us way more than we wanted to know about his prior sexual conquests. Foreigner remains one of our top faves. Lots of good music you shared here. Thanks! Have a wonderful rest of your week.

Thanks for hopping over, dear friend! I'm happy to know that a couple of the tunes on Daisy's playlist resonated with you and brought memories to mind. Knowing that you and your hubby have gone to hundreds of concerts over the years, I suspected you have seen at least one of these acts do their live show. It's interesting that David Lee Roth choose to ramble on and on about his conquests, wasting valuable time when he could have been and should have been singing. I'm glad Foreigner is one of your favorite bands.

Thanks again for checking out this sneak preview of Daisy Skye Johnson's new radio show Power Surge exclusively here on SPMM Radio. I hope you and Benny aren't suffering too much discomfort from the smoky air in your region and I certainly hope you and your property stay out of danger as they strive to put out those fires. 11. Hi Daisy "Quake" and Shady! I'm almost always a day late these days, but I show up sooner than later (I hope)!

I think Steppenwolf was so cool, although I only remember a few of their songs, and they were big hits! I don't recall hearing "Sookie Sookie", but I really enjoyed the video. These guys really rocked, and were accomplished musicians before their time!

Another great musical band with fantastic guitar work is Van Halen! "Jump" is a great song, and David Lee Roth gives it all he's got! You are correct in saying he was flamboyant...and, what a voice that guy has!

Thanks for the blast from the past with Mick and the guys! "Jumpin Jack Flash" is one of their best...oh darn, they're all the best! I applaud this group for their ongoing upgrades to their musical abilities, which in my opinion, surpass most other rock and roll bands from that 60 's era. The Rolling Stones band is probably my 2nd favorite band ever! Can't really pick my number 1 favorite, haha!

I always liked Hendrix, but I was not an avid fan. He did "All Along The Watchtower" better than anyone could. This song to me was one of Jimi's best!

Gotta love "Head Games" by Foreigner-I love these guys! The vocals are so convincing-and, the story he sings rings true in many lives. What a way to put that message across! Cool video!

How about that James Gang! This song "Woman" always gives me chills! It is so powerful, and the guitar really rocks, dragging you into the mood of the lyrics which, by the way, seem to be unrehearsed! I love these guys too, and will have to pick this one as my favorite. That Joe Walsh is something else! I know he was a bad boy of the day, but has always delivered the good stuff! Thanks Daisy for this one-it's a big treat for me!

So, Daisy and Shady, you did us proud! These are some real greats for sure! Evol Walks is a fun group and very talented. I love the guys costumes, haha!

Thank you for this fun post! Hope all is well in Shadyland! I'm trying to get Scootie motivated for online school that starts Monday. Hopefully in 2 or 3 weeks I can escort him through the school doors! Have a great rest of the week!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Thanks for coming to Daisy's sneak preview party, dear friend! It's AOK to arrive a day or two late because I refill the punch bowl as needed and always have lots of baloney to offer you! :) Daisy Skye Johnson aka "Quake" is my favorite character on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and that's why she got the green light for her own rocking' radio show officially starting next year.

I bought the Steppenwolf 45 "Magic Carpet Ride" upon it's release in the fall of 1968 and played both sides heavily. That's how I first came to know "Sookie Sookie." It's interesting that "Sookie Sookie" was first released as the A side of a single in February of that year with "Take What You Need" as the B side. In September "Sookie" was released as the designated A side of a 45 with "Magic Carpet Ride" as the B side. It soon became clear that "Magic Carpet" was the song radio stations wanted to play and listeners wanted to hear. Dunhill Records finally got it right by switching the sides. "Sookie" burned into my memory in a different context late in 1983 when it was used in the soundtrack of the disturbing Eric Roberts biopic Star 80 which I highly recommend.

I'm thrilled that you like Diamond Dave doing his thing as the flamboyant frontman of Van Halen on their smash hit "Jump," a song that almost didn't get recorded because some thought the synth/pop rock arrangement represented too much of a departure for the band. I am pleased to know you like Mick & his Merry Mates. I was surprised to find that nicely restored promo clip of them doing 'Jumpin' Jack Flash." I am especially happy that you singled out the James Gang because they are underrated and sometimes overlooked in discussions of great rock bands of the period. I owned that album and my girlfriend and I played it often down in the subterranean game room where my parents entertained friends. Daisy will be picking more James Gang songs, more by Foreigner, the Stones, Steppenwolf and many other bands in future volumes of her show. I'm tickled that you mentioned the bizarre costumes worn by the Aussie band Evol Walks. I'll bet they raised a few eyebrows dressing that way at their live shows.

I wish Scootie all the best for a safe, happy and successful school year, regardless of how it needs to unfold. Thanks again for joining the fun and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Suzanne!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming down and tuning in to SPMM Ultrasonic Radio with Daisy Skye Johnson behind the mic and on the air!

Thanks for weighing in on the classic rock sounds of yesterday as compared to the unimaginative artists and recordings on today's Hit Parade. I wouldn't trade places with anybody, especially not modern youth. I'm happy to know your brother is a Hendrix hound. I agree that some of the boys in the bands of this period were not exactly GQ model material. You might recall a different music genre, the pretty boy pop bands, that started to become fashionable in the 80s and reached their peak in the 90s and early 2000s.

Hey, BB, thank you very much for coming by and for your comment. Enjoy the rest of your day, dear friend, and I'll see you tamale!

  13. Count me as one who prefers the Diamond Dave version of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar was technically a better singer and you can argue Eddie's guitar is the main attraction no matter who sings lead, but Roth's tongue-in-cheek showmanship kept VH from sounding like every other hair band.

Foreigner takes me back to high school, when that band always seemed to be on the radio. FM radio, anyway. Lou Gramm was one of the great rock belters, even if he's not as well-known as some of the others. I see he's 70 now. How time flies.

The Stones. If not the greatest rock band in the world (as they were promoted during one of their tours) they came as close as anyone, even the Beatles, in 1968.

I have the Are You Experienced album, and so am familiar, and greatly like, "All Along the Watchtower" but for some reason didn't know it ever charted as a single. Nice to see that it did.

"Sookie, Sookie" didn't ring a bell, and I've SEEN Star 80. Just now went and dug up a Steppenwolf's Greatest Hit tape, and, yep, it's there. So I flubbed TWO chances at recognition. Sheesh.

I believe I've heard "Woman" before, but I always confuse Joe Walsh's James Gang music with his solo music. It's only the Eagles I manage to get straight. Incidentally, Walsh got his musical start at Kent State, which is to east of Cleveland. Much better that university be known for that than...well, let's not go there.

Finally, the "Spirit in the Sky" cover. I wouldn't think a Goth backed by a bunch of cross-dressing Santas would have "a friend in Jesus", but it's one way of keeping the Christ in Christmas, and I liked it.

That makes 2 or 3 virtual votes for David Lee Roth. I need to stop you right here, Kirk, and remind you that this is only an exhibition. It is not a competition. Please --- no wagering.

I'm still upset with Valerie Bertinelli for marrying Eddie. If she would have played her cards right... she could have had Shady!

I'll tell you, as I watch that VH video, I am reminded how innocent and popish many long hair bands were in the 80s. At the time they seemed rough and rowdy, but not by today's standards. Only Motley Crue, Kiss and a few others stood the test of time as true hardcore rock bands.

From 1977 to 1988, Foreigner put together an impressive string of hits. There were not many months during that span when they didn't have a hot single charting. I'm glad "Head Games" brought back high school memories. I agree that The Stones were at their peak in the mid to late 60s. I wasn't as fond of them during the MTV era. I'm glad you appreciate my chart stats for the Hendrix single and the rest. On nearly every song on every post I list the Billboard, Cash Box and, when an artist of color is involved, the Black Singles chart data. When applicable I also provide stats for the Country, Adult Contemporary, Dance, Mainstream Rock and other charts. "Watchtower" reminds me of my college years training in the broadcasting studio. We put together a music video using that Hendrix song.

"Sookie Sookie" is used in the opening scene of that movie, a ride at the carnival in Vancouver. If you liked creepy Eric Roberts in that film, you MUST watch his recent series of films Stalked By My Doctor. They are deliciously dark and funny!

The music video for the Joe Walsh solo single "Confessor" was big on the MTV station where I worked in the 80s and 90s. Since the intro is so long, I probably won't ever run it on one of my radio shows, but it's worth a look and a listen on YouTube if you are interested. I was attending Penn State when the Kent State massacre took place. Thousands of panic stricken PSU parents called to check on their kids thinking the shootings had been on our campus.

Hahaha! I'm tickled silly that you enjoyed the sight as well as the sound of the Aussie band Evol Walks. I like the lead zinger's shirt!

Thanks again for joining the party, good buddy Kirk. I need to let you know that I am now starting a brief blogging break to handle some family matters and get some rest. I have a post coming Monday morning to announce my hiatus. I'll see you when I resume blogging which hopefully will be September 2. Take care, good buddy Kirk!

  14. Hey Tom,

Here's another post with videos 4, 5, & 6 from the top aren't working. I use the plugin Broken Links. It notifies me of such problems. I don't know if it's available to Blogspot but I think you can go to their website which I think you can put your url in for it to check these sorts of problems but it takes a long time or that's the way I remember it being when I looked into it for my Blogspot blog. TTFN!

    1. Thanks, Cathy, but I don't have time to replace all of the lost videos. There are probably hundreds of them from that one source. Fortunately I am familiar with that YouTuber. His account has been suspended a few times in a recent years and he always immediately creates another account and starts re-uploading his videos. I am always looking to the future, and will probably plug them into new posts somewhere down the line. Thanks again for caring, dear friend Cathy!
