Hi, I'm Shawn Spencer...
psychic sleuth and boy toy to the stars.

and this is my partner, Rumpelstiltskin Bleeth,
licensed mother's milk taste tester.

Not true, Shawn!

Recently, Gus and I were celebrity contestants
on the TV game show Rock Jeopardy.

It went something..... like..... this.....

        I'll take
        Nursery Rhyme

                  A reminder, Gus, that

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for sprinting over to claim the early bird position, good buddy!

As you recall, Shawn & Gus have been playing Rock Jeopardy for quite a few years now. They started on Shady Dell Music & Memories when YOU were the host, later to be replaced by Alex Trebek. It is rare for Shawn Spencer to correctly guess a question, and he wound up with a goose egg in today's round. :)

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Alex!

    1. Hi, Alreen!

You just missed the early bird spot, dear friend. Thanks for coming over early on day one to play a rousing game of Rock Jeopardy with Shawn & Gus!

Looks like your score tops Shawn's, putting you securely in second place behind Gus. I'm glad you correctly guessed "Kansas City" and enjoyed Shawn's answer. The judges needed to deliberate five full minutes to determine whether to accept it and give Shawn the points. :)

Thanks again for being here, dear friend Arleen, and have a wonderful weekend up there in the Keystone State!

  3. Fake Dog Poop Discounters sounds like something George Carlin came up with (I think it was on his "Class Clown" album, called "How Much Is That Dog Crap in the Window?").

Gus really was the rains of "Psych," wasn't he?

    1. Hi, John!

Welcome back over to Shady's clubhouse, good buddy!

From an early age I was influenced by the comedy of George Carlin. Remember him as Herbie Fleck in With Six You Get Eggroll? I listened to his Class Clown album in the early 70s and I vaguely recall that bit about the dog crap in the window. :)

Mrs. Shady and I have run through the Psych series several times and we never get tired of the shenanigans. Gus is the ideal straight man for Shawn. It was inspired casting to select one of the breakout characters on The West Wing to be the co-star on Psych.

Thanks for dropping in to watch an episode of the popular game show Rock Jeopardy, good buddy John!

  4. Poor Shawn. And poor me! I didn't know any of these! Kansas City seems familiar, but it might must be the "sound" rather than the actual song.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for coming by, dear friend! How's my buddy Pat?

I'm glad you decided to kick-off your weekend with Shawn & Gus as they play another exciting round of Rock Jeopardy, a series that started years ago on my old blog SDMM.

Looks like you and Shawn drew a blank on these answers/questions. Kansas City was a smash hit for Wilbert Harrison at the end of the 50s and was covered by The Beatles in their early live sets and on several of their albums. Little Richard also recorded the song. As you might know and recall, Wilbert Harrison is also known for a song he wrote and recorded about peace and unity entitled "Let's Work Together," a top 40 hit in early 1970 that was successfully covered by the rock band Canned Heat and also released in 1976 (as "Let's Stick Together") by Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame.

Thanks again for coming over, dear friend Kelly, and have a great weekend!

  5. Ha! You are so darn funny Shady! Thanks for the shout out! YaYa is better than "Kathy's Clown" in the tune catagory! Fun post as always and good songs and I actually knew most of them. This YaYa is signing off! Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you for coming over, dear friend! I'm glad you liked the shout out in this latest round of the Shady's Place TV series Rock Jeopardy starring Shawn & Gus from Psych and hosted by the one and only Alex Trebek.

I must admit that Canadian rock & metal queen Lee Aaron is a new-to-me artist. I just discovered her recently on YouTube. I was so impressed that I grabbed several of her songs for upcoming SPMM radio shows, and I decided to use "American High" in this edition of Rock Jeopardy.

Someday I hope you will explain how you got the nickname YaYa. I am curious and would like to know. If you already did tell me and I forgot, I apologize. :)

Thanks again for stopping in to see what Shawn & Gus are up to. I wish you a safe and happy weekend, dear friend YaYa!

  6. Tom,

Your songs featured in this edition are new to me but DH definitely knew the last one. It came out a few months before he was born but I imagine since he could sing along with the lyrics that it carried well into the 60s for him to pick up. :) Thanks for another fun mewsic installment. I hope you are enjoying your weekend, my friend. Stay safe and be well!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for setting aside time during your weekend to play Rock Jeopardy at Shady's Place!

I figured you might be a tad too young to remember that Lee Dorsey song from the mid 60s and certainly the one from the late 50s, in spite of the fact that both singles were major hits. Thanks for letting me know that DH remembers Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City." He might also recall The Beatles doing it. My mother hated rock & roll, but "Kansas City" was a record she actually liked, no doubt because it had a syncopated rhythm, reminding her of the sounds of the Swing years when tap dancing was popular to recordings like that one.

I'm pleased to know that you had fun here today. Thanks again for making time and enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend Cathy!

Many LUBBINS to you as well, dear friend cat. Thanks again for joining the fun. Please stay well and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  8. I'm afraid I'm not any better than Shawn at this game. Funny thing is, I've heard "Kansas City" done by may different artists over the years, including Chuck Berry (whose version I happen to have on a CD), so I should have immediately recognized the lyrics "They got some crazy little women there,
and I'm gonna get me one." but somehow reading them out of context--albeit not very far out of context--instead of listening, caused me to draw a blank. Oh, well. I probably would have forgotten to put it in the form of a question anyway.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming by, good buddy! Even though you failed to get on the scoreboard in this round, I hope you enjoyed playing Rock Jeopardy along with Shawn, Gus and Alex Trebek.

"Kansas City" is indeed an oft recorded song. I have heard the Little Richard version and the one by The Beatles, but I am not familiar with Chuck Berry's. BRB.

(5 minutes elapse while Kirk patiently reads a back issue of Mad Magazine.)

I'm back, good buddy. Sorry to keep you waiting. :) I went over to YouTube and searched high and low for a version of Kansas City by Chuck Berry but couldn't find one. As you know, the city song Chuck is famous for is "Memphis, Tennessee." I still think the panel of backstage judges on Jeopardy should have awarded Shawn the points for his question/answer. Shawn got it right! :)

Thanks again for swinging by, good buddy Kirk. I hope your weekend is going well and that you will have a restful and enjoyable Sunday!

  9. OK, I looked at both a Chuck Berry CD and a Chuck Berry cassette and couldn't find it. Then I looked at both a Little Richard CD and Little Richard cassette, and it wasn't there either. But I knew I had it SOMEWHERE. So I went to the Wikipedia entry for the song to see who recorded it, and it turns out I have, of all things, the BEATLES version. On their Anthology CD, which came out like, gosh, 20 years ago. Another reason for me not to go on Jeopardy.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for clearing that up, good buddy. Early on, The Beatles borrowed a good number of R&B songs from American artists for use in their live shows, and "Kansas City" is one of them. It doesn't surprise me that there are several different takes of the song on Beatles albums, seeing as how just about every sound the Fab Four ever made has been released by this time. The Rolling Stones, Animals and other British bands also borrowed material from U.S. blues and R&B artists.

      Thanks again, good buddy!

  10. Oh, I should add this is an alternative take of "Kansas City", so there's another Beatles version somewhere else out there.

      * Ginger... or Mary Ann?

      * On The Drew Carey Show - Kate... or Mimi?

      But I won't. :)

Thanks for taking an interest in the post, good buddy Kirk!

  11. Hi Shady! Here's how YaYa got to be my nickname. The Greek word for Grandma is: Yia Yia...sometimes rendered as Ya Ya. So when we had our first grandkiddo and the kids asked what we wanted to be called I chose YaYa for me and PawPaw for Jack. The Greek word for grandpa is Pa-pous but PawPaw was easier! Soon a lot of my coworkers were calling me YaYa or more often now: Starko. Coworkers are telling me they miss my "Starcasm"! When I started blogging the address was yayapawpaw.blogspot.com and I named it Whispering Pines because that's what we call our little Garden of Eden...or I now call it "Garden of Weeding"...I'm always giving nicknames to people, places and things. That's how I roll! You asked a simple question and I gave you the nonReader's Digest version! Sorry! Take care!

    1. Hi again, YaYa!

Thanks for coming back over late, dear friend! I'm pleased to have you, my guest of honor, return and take time to explain how Kathleen turned into YaYa. It's an interesting story, one that I don't remember "hearing" before, and I appreciate knowing. It's also a new-to-me tidbit that you have been called Starko in recent years. I wish I had been among your OR co-workers over the years to experience your Starcasm.

My big brother Keith was nicknamed Punk because, as my parents explained, as a newborn baby he reminded someone of a pumpkin. He was called Pumpkin for a couple of years before it turned into Punkie and then Punk. The nickname stuck. 70+ years later I still call him Punk. When people hear me refer to him by that name, they at first think I am using the word as an insult. I assure them the nickname is applied with great fondness and respect.

I wish I were there in your Garden of Weeding because, soon now, you will begin to feel autumn's nip in the evening. Meanwhile we are trapped in a steam bath for months to come and sweating out the hurricane season.

Thank you again for being a good sport and letting me use that Lee Dorsey oldie to pay tribute to one of my greatest blogging friends - YaYa. Enjoy your Sunday and the week ahead, dear friend!

Thanks for coming to play Rock Jeopardy with the guys from Psych, dear friend!

To me, the big discovery here is Lee Aaron. Until recently I never heard of her. Lee has been recording and performing nearly 40 years and is apparently well known in Canada, enough so that she has been dubbed Canada's Metal Queen. She reminds me of Pat Benatar.

Thanks again for dropping by. I'm glad these tunes gave you a lift today, dear friend JM. I wish you a safe and happy week ahead!

  13. Hi guys...sorry to be so late. I was here on the first day, left a comment, then hit the wrong button and lost it! And, I don't like the new blog stuff! I have a lot going on and was unable to return until now. It's totally hot and muggy in my neighborhood with no rain in sight.

I read this post on Friday and had a fun surprise. I am from Kansas City and I grew up with Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City". I haven't heard the song in a long time, and it was a real treat to see the video. I think a lot of folks love this one, even if they are not from Kansas City!

Oooh Yes! Sittin' there La La! I loved seeing this one also! One of the best dance tunes, and piano playing. This one is too cool! One of my sister's boyfriends would always sing this in our house while waiting for my sister to get ready for their date! They called him "Big Ed" and he was a smooth dancer! Ed and my sister remained friends all the years after high school, and, sadly he passed away a few years ago. We remember those times fondly-it's a special song that takes your memory back to the people who touched your life.

Alex, Shawn, Gus, and you too, Shady have a wonderful week. I've got to get busy again. Thank you for the fun memories. I also enjoyed Lee Aaron and "American High". See you guys next time.

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to play a rousing round of Rock Jeopardy with Shawn, Gus and Alex.

Busy as you are, I'm sorry "the dog ate your homework" and your first comment vanished. It has happened to me so many times that I have gotten into the habit of making a copy of long comments and replies before trying to submit them. Blogger is switching us from one interface to another this month and anything can happen.

I'm sorry you are frazzled from the heat and your busy days, Suzanne. Fortunately we have had rain nearly every day this summer. If this isn't the rainiest summer on record in Central Florida I'd be surprised. The lawns look good and the plants, shrubs and trees are flourishing. Surprisingly not a single one of those daily downpours has been the result of a severe storm with thunder, lightning and wind gusts. We have been lucky in that regard and, as you know, we have not been in the path of any tropical storms or hurricanes so far.

Yessum, I know you are from Kansas City and I'm happy to learn that you remember that hit song. Were you one of those "crazy little women" Wilbert sings about? :) As you probably noticed, there are cutaway shots of the audience during Harrison's performance. The teens are chewing their cud, and that means we are watching a clip lifted from The Dick Clark Show aka Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show. By the way, do you remember "pucker gum" - the very sour gum sold as a novelty to give friends as a prank? My dad worked in an office supply store that had an extensive novelty section. They sold pucker gum, Magic 8 Balls, plastic fake ice cubes with spiders and flies inside of them, and the novelties mentioned at the end of my post, the ones being peddled by Shady Del Knight - fake dog poop and rubber vomit. I used to love visiting my dad's store and looking at those novelties. After I begged him for them a long time, Dad finally broke down and bought me some fake dog poop and rubber vomit. When my parents threw parties for their friends, I strategically placed the gag items where guests would discover them. :) By the way, if you're in the market, I can get you a great price on Norwegian Elkhound. :) Prices are slashed! Everything must go! :)

I remember you telling me about your sister's boyfriend Big Ed a while back. It's sad that such a nice guy and great dancer passed away too soon. As you might have realized, that Lee Dorsey video is from an episode of Dick Clark's Where The Action Is. As you view Lee in the bleachers, blonde Jill Gordon, a member of The Action Kids dance troupe, is on his right clowning around with the hat. On Lee's Left is brunette beauty Lesley Evans, another dancer on the show. I'm thrilled that the "Ya Ya" song brought back fond memories of your youth and people who touched your life in a positive way.

You really must be busy, Suzanne. I assume it is because you are preparing Scootie for the coming school year. I hope it is a good, safe and productive year for him. I feel very badly that millions of young people have their daily lives and social lives disrupted as we try to ride out this awful pandemic. All of us are eager for things to return to some semblance of normal. Unfortunately there's no guarantee it ever will.

I'm delighted that you got so much out of the post. Hy Lit returns this Wednesday with a batch of great tunes from his playlist. Stay safe, get some rest when you can and have a good week, dear friend Suzanne, and thanks again for spending some time in the Shady!
