"I Can't Wait" - Stevie Nicks
(May/June 1986, highest chart pos. #3 Cash Box,
#16 Hot 100from Nov. 1985 album Rock A Little)

Proving that skin color has nothing
to do with soul, that was soulful
siren Stevie Nicks, former front-
woman of Fleetwood Mac, with
"I Can't Wait," a single from her
1985 solo album Rock A Little.
"I Can't Wait" reached its peak
at #3 on the Cash Box chart
late in the spring of 1986.

Hi, I'm Mandy Lang
from the Fox crime
thriller TV series
The Following.

I live in a shack in the boonies with
my prostitute mother Judy. I'm an
admirer of Joe Carroll, a former
professor turned serial killer and
cult leader, a man who spent a
year hiding out with us to
avoid capture. Joe is a
father figure to me.

And I'm Molly Quinn
from Hulu's dramatic
TV series Reprisal.

Like Mandy's, my life is no picnic.
My husband is an alcoholic, two-
bit gangster. Breaking the chains,
hooked up with a relentless
femme fatale who, after being
left for dead, leads her posse on
a vengeful campaign against a
bombastic gang of gearheads.

In addition to coming from
hard times, Mandy and I
have something else in
common. We both have
soul and we both love
soul music, old and new,
 everything from grits 'n'
gravy southern R&B to
gospel tinged deep soul,
retro soul, sweet soul,
blue-eyed soul, disco-
funk and even classic
rock that has soul.

As you can see, I clean up good
here at my cabin in the cotton.

I got all gussied up to join
Molly as co-host for this
Shady's Place event:

Gold Dust Woman's
Mac Nuggets.

We kicked things off with
the real deal - Stevie Nicks.
Now meet a Stevie Nicks
soundalike who, along with
her group, will amaze you
 with their tribute to Stevie
and her band Fleetwood Mac.
They're Gold Dust Woman,
fronted by award winning
 singer Jo Elbers. The act
is billed as Australia's
premier tribute show and
"The Ultimate Fleetwood
Mac Experience."

  1. Good morning Shady! Could I actually be the first but not last this morning? I had a big flashback to my youth and my fav radio station..WLS!! Yes! All I needed was my transistor radio! I enjoyed this Stevie Nicks sound alike. I knew all the tunes and at the end I went and played the first song along with the last and wow, Gold Dust Woman is really almost a clone! I don't know the shows but the M girls are adorable but I have a feeling their series isn't! So I'm going to go my own way and prepare the rooms here at the Pines for new windows coming this week. It's finally raining out which I think I heard my flowers and grass applauding! Plus with the humidity and heat we may have Florida tribute weather up north! Have a good week Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! Yessum, you are indeed the Early Bird this time, and I thank you for coming right over. I want you to know that I am thinking about Midge and all the folks back home as a Chicago community has been rocked by another mass shooting incident, bringing terror to a family-oriented 4th of July celebration and parade. Senseless acts like this one make the memories you and I have of carefree years of youth all the more precious, don't they?

I'm pleased that you enjoyed Stevie and the Stevie soundalike artist Jo Elbers, frontwoman of the Australian Fleetwood Mac tribute band Gold Dust Woman. When Jo sang "Gypsy," my eyes filled with tears.

The "M" girls, Mandy and Molly, come from two separate TV series and yessum, both of those TV shows are dark and violent. However, The M Squad, their upcoming radio show here at Shady's Place, will hopefully be a very pleasurable experience for you, because it will bring you the best soul sounds of the last 60 years, including songs in the classic rock genre such as these by the very soulful and witchy woman Stevie Nicks. Stay tuned!

I hope all goes smoothy when your windows arrive for installation. Glad you're getting rain. In recent weeks, we have been blessed with enough rain to keep the crops growing and the lawn green.

Thank you again for joining me for this concert featuring Gold Dust Woman - "The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Experience." Have a safe and peaceful week, dear friend YaYa!

  2. Am I the first??? Jumping Johosophat if that is the Case! I'm all for show casing women who are strong, talented and have an edge. No Karen need not apply ( except for Karen Valentine).
I love Stevie Nicks who has such a wealth of talent. I wonder how many people told her she couldn't sing? Her raspy voice is perfect for so many song genres. This showcases how greatly talented she is as a singer, entertainer and song writer.
Gold Dust is excellent and they nail the sound especially that lady with tge same voice as Stevie she has a bit more nasally sound to her but I sm nit picking The man's voice was not as on point but he still had a strong vocal ability and carries thst great song well. I have not watched these shows but they sound intriguing
By the way, most of us gals have bodacious Mac Nuggets have a wonderful day and Harley says " Woof".

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! You finished a close second in this week's Race to Shady's Place, and I thank you for hustling right over and being a Day One Doozy.

Thanks for remembering (thinking of) perky actress Karen Valentine. I feel badly for her and all the other nice Karens who, in recent years, have had their name go viral in a negative context. Same thing for guys named "Ken."

The two actresses featured in this post, the two ""M" characters that will serve as presenters for my new radio series The M Squad (the title inspired by Lee Marvin's detective TV series), have appeared in many of the edgy TV series Mrs. Shady and I have watched in recent years. In addition to her role as Mandy Lang in the second season of the Kevin Bacon TV series The Following, actress Tiffany Boone played the role of Roxy Jones in the Al Pacino series (Nazi) Hunters, and she was "Delilah" in Nicole Kidman's recent miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. In addition to her role as Molly in Abigail Spencer's TV series Reprisal, talented stage and screen actress Bethany Anne Lind was in the film Mean Girls 2, appeared in Stranger Things and played preacher wife Grace Young in my favorite TV series Ozark.

I'm happy that you enjoyed this set of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks solo hit songs, and glad your ears agree with mine that Jo Elbers does a fine impression of Stevie as lead zinger of the Aussie tribute band Gold Dust Woman.

Please give my buddy Harley a ridiculously expensive slab of steak and tell him Shady shipped it up to him. Thank you again for running right over to join the fun this morning. Have a wonderful week, dear friend BB, and I'll see you tamale for your song feature at BBC!

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Thanks for coming, dear friend! You take home the bronze this week for dropping by early as Mandy & Molly promote their new Shady's Place series The M Squad and introduce the fine Australian Fleetwood Mac tribute band Gold Dust Woman.

I agree that Stevie Nicks made a very successful transition from lead vocalist of her famous band to a hit-making solo artist. Stevie boasts one of the most distinctive voices in music, and I hope you agree that Jo Elbers did justice to these Stevie covers.

Thanks again for coming and for brining my buddy Pat along. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Kelly!

  4. Hi Shady, I don't know any of these songs although I've certainly heard the name, Fleetwood Mac. My daughter gave her first-born the middle names Stevie-Lynne after Stevie Nicks and my middle name, Lynne. Obviously, she was a big fan!

It was fun getting to know Stevie's music. My favorite song was, Stand Back and I Can't Wait. Gold Dust Woman does a fantastic job of covering the songs. The M Squad are doing a great job choosing songs. So one of them has a serial killer as a "father figure." Lol. Well, whatever works! Thanks for the fun, Shady. Hope you had a great Fourth-of-July weekend.

    1. Hi, Belle!

Thanks for paying a visit this week, dear friend! I'm excited that you were here to enjoy this pre-pandemic concert staged by Gold Dust Woman, the Aussie tribute act that bills itself as "The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Experience."

Based on your comment, it's possible that Fleetwood Mac was not as big in your part of Canada as they were in the U.S., and that might include Stevie Nicks during the phase of her career as a soloist. I say that because all of these songs were major U.S. hits at the time and have endured as classic rock staples.

It's exciting to learn that one of your daughters gave her first born child the middle names Stevie-Lynne because she was a big fan of Stevie Nicks (and, quite obviously, of YOU, her wonderful mother). I'm delighted that you enjoyed getting to know the nuggets recorded by Fleetwood Mac and by Stevie Nicks during her solo career, and that you singled out two of Stevie's solo hits, "Stand Back" and "I Can't Wait," as favorites in this set. Stevie's music videos were played heavily on the MTV station where I was working at the time, and I remember producing promos for her concert performances at a local venue when her national tour brought her to the greater Tampa Bay area.

Yessum, I am looking forward to the launch of The M Squad on SPMM Retrosonic Radio. All 7 presenters have first names that start with the letter "M," and all 7 are favorite characters from TV series and movies. The M Squad will feature soul music in all its forms, and that includes performances by soulful white artists like Stevie. Yessum, Mandy Lang is a young woman of color living in poverty with her mother, the town tramp, at a shack in the boonies. Given Mandy's desperate situation, it is easy to understand how and why she fell under the spell of a serial killer - slash - cult leader in The Following.

Thanks again for coming down, dear friend Belle. I hope all is AOK on your side of the screen. Have a safe and happy week!

  5. Hi Shady! I watched "The Following" and it was pretty scary! Stevie Nicks is my absolute favorite and as such it is very hard for me to listen to covers. Gold Dust Woman is pretty good but I'll take the real deal every time.

Hope you had a great 4th. Our poor Benny was traumatized by the booms and bangs. I'll have to think of something to do for him to help calm him next year. Happy Tuesday!

    1. Hi, Janet!

My golly, dear friend, you're really on the ball lately, coming right over when I publish something new! I'm thankful that you have Shady's Place on your mind and check-in regularly.

I know you and Bill love to attend live concerts, and today you had a front row seat for the Gold Rush Woman show, featuring the authentic sound of Fleetwood Mac and their lead zinger Stevie Nicks courtesy of gifted Aussie thrush and Stevie soundalike Jo Elbers. I'd have to agree that you can't beat the original, especially in this case. When it comes to singing evocative songs that tug at the heartstrings and fire the imagination, Stevie Nicks is a black magic woman.

Hey, it's very cool that you watched Kevin Bacon's suspense thriller TV series The Following. Tiffany Boone impressed me with her acting in season two, and I enjoyed her subsequent performances in the main cast of Hunters and in Nine Perfect Strangers. Many of the characters I pick to host my various series are played by actors and actresses who have appeared or starred in, not just one, but several films or TV series that I loved. Therefore, when a character is chosen to become a member of The Shady Bunch, it amounts to a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for that particular person.

I'm so sorry Benny was rattled by the loud booms, bangs, pops and sizzles in the sky above as people celebrated the 4th in your vicinity. Our kitty Bootsie-Wootsie also ran for cover and hid in a laundry basket in a closet the whole night. Here in our neighborhood, fireworks were set-off three nights in a row - a little excessive if you ask me!

Thanks again for coming over, dear friend Janet, and have a wonderful week out there in the SF area!

Thanks for being here, good buddy! I'm glad you give thumbs up to Aussie sparkplug Jo Elbers for her vocal imitation of Stevie Nicks on these covers of Fleetwood Mac songs and Stevie's major solo hits.

Thanks again for weighing in on this live concert performance by Gold Rush Woman from the land down under. I highly recommend the two TV series referenced in the post, The Following and Reprisal.

Have a great week, good buddy Alex!

I love The Following. I was so mad when they cancelled it. But it seems like all the good shows get cancelled.

I'm glad you are a Stevie Nicks fan. Thanks for letting me know that you still prefer the original Stevie over imitator Jo. I am also pleased to know that you watched The Following and was sad to see it go, as was I. Mandy Lang will be back with Molly and five other "M" characters when The M Squad premieres here at Shady's Place. Stay tuned!

Thanks again for dropping in and for your patience as I fished your comment out of the spam bin again this week. I'll be over to see you and Falcor tamale at Dark Thoughts, dear friend Mary!

My parents are huge Fleetwood Mac fans and they've grown on me over the years. I'm amazed with these covers! I'll have to let my parents listen.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie, and happy birthday to you, dear friend!

I'm delighted to hear from you and glad your parents' love of Fleetwood Mac rubbed off on you over the years. Yessum, your folks should enjoy these covers by the band down under, Gold Dust Woman.

I know what you mean by needing a vacation from a vacation. I remember many vacations where I (or we) had too much planned, too many activities and events scheduled, too many things to see and do every day, and we wore ourselves out.

Thanks again for stopping in, dear friend JM. Get some rest and have a fabulous birthday week!

    2. Thank you, Shady! Birthday week continues and will continue into Saturday apparently. There's a lot to celebrate this weekend; I'm going back to my old role at the County, Tommy has a new job he'll start next week, and our 8 month anniversary is on Monday. Many more moments for the Happiness Box!

I'll play this for dad when he takes me to work tomorrow. He will definitely love it. I'll redirect mom to YouTube!

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.

Yessum, don't be chicken to play these Mac Nuggets for your dad. (See what I did there?) He should know the songs and appreciate Gold Dust Woman.

I'm very happy to know that things are looking up on your side of the screen. Soon it will be 8 months and counting for you and Tommy.

Happy TT! Take care and enjoy your Friday and weekend, dear friend JM!

  9. Hey Tom, How are you doing? It's a rainy afternoon in east Tennessee. I can't keep above the blogging waters very well these days but here I am at last. I really appreciated the introduction to this cover artist. Gold Dust Woman really sounds like Stevie Nicks. Had I only heard her singing, then I'm not sure I would know the difference. She's very good. Excellent set of Fleetwood Mac tunes to enjoy as the day winds down. Take it easy, my friend!

  10. Some of these girls are from the school of hard knocks, but they seem to be able to roll with those punches. Too many cliches? Probably. I've been writing and have used up all of my original prose.

I liked Stevie Nicks until some of her videos came out, and then not so much. Too dark for me, queen of the light and airy.

Yessum, the two presenters for today's sneak preview of the new radio series The M Squad had a rough time of it, but bounced back. It's onward and upward as they now have an opportunity to join the Shady Bunch DJ team. It's interesting that you consider witchy woman Stevie's image too dark for your taste. Knowing that to be the case, it seems unlikely that you have seen her acting and singing performances in the "Coven" season of American Horror Story.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Cheryl-Lee!
