"Barbara Ann" - The Beach Boys
 (Jan./Feb. 1966, highest chart pos. #1 Cash Box/#2 Hot 100
from Nov. 1965 album Beach Boys' Party!

A song from the 1965 album Beach Boys' Party!... that was "Barbara Ann"
featuring Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean on co-lead vocals along with
Brian Wilson and backed by America's Beach Boys. "Barbara-Ann"
was originally recorded in 1961 by the Bronx doo-wop group
The Regents who had a #13 charting hit with it. In early
1966 the Beach Boys cover topped the Cash Box chart
and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the summer
of 1975, the Beach Boys' single made a return visit to the
chart and Bubbled Under for three weeks, finishing at #101.

Hi everyone! It's Almost Wordless Wednesday
and I'm Wordless Wendi, Wendi Falkenberry,
Eddie Cleary's perky, levelheaded girlfriend
on The Kids Are Alright, the TV sitcom set
in the year 1972. I'm here today along with
three other cool television characters with
a sneak preview of our new radio shows.
That's right, you guessed it. Beginning
next year the four of us will be joining
The Shady Bunch as DJs on S-P-M-M

called Wordless Wendi because I'll
bring you more music with less talk,
the best surf-rock and sunshine pop
hits of 60s, and right now I've got
another one by The Beach Boys.

Hi, I'm Nia Nal, code name Dreamer on the hit
TV series Supergirl. In 2018 I made history as
the first transgender superhero on television.

Latin rock 'n' roll pioneer Ritchie Valens was
only seventeen years old when he died in an
Iowa plane crash along with Buddy Holly
and The Big Bopper on February 3, 1959,
a date immortalized in the Don McLean
song "American Pie" as "The Day the
Music Died." Ritchie's adaptation of
the Mexican folk song "La Bamba"
was released as a single at the end
of 1958 and charted in the weeks
before and after his tragic death.

Hi, I'm Iris West, news journalist
and Barry Allen's girlfriend on the
DC Comics superhero TV series
The Flash. You might recall the
night we met when Shady Dell
Music & Memories presented
the rave party Barry's Bash
"Dance With The Flash."

My new show, which begins
next year on S-P-M-M, will be

I'll be playing hot urban soul,

all the way to #1, but somehow missed the Hot 100. O'Bryan co-

  1. It threw me off when I saw the final clip, thinking to myself, "the Beach Boys didn't sing Wendy!". Then I realized I was mistaking it for "Windy" by the Association.

I was never in to all the beach party, California surfing stuff, but do enjoy some of the Beach Boys songs. Barbara Ann is one of my faves of theirs.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

You and Pat earn the Early Bird Golden Worm trophy, dear friend! :) Thanks for scurrying over to experience this sneak preview of new SPMM radio shows hosted by four personalities from the world of television.

Yessum, the titles "Windy" and "Wendy" are similar, and I can understand why you were confused until you listened to the last song. FYI - "Wendy" is the theme song of Wordless Wendi, the show that will be hosted by the smart, level-headed girl next door Wendi Falkenberry. Wendi has a fondness for The Beach Boys, and it will be interesting to see which if any of their songs you like in future volumes. Keep in mind that the band graduated from surf and hot rod songs to more mature material beginning in 1966, so there's that...

Thanks again for being the first to report in, dear friend Kelly. Take care and enjoy the rest of your week!

    3. Kelly, I knew immediately before even seeing the link you provided what this was going to be. I am deeply saddened over your loss.

It is a great honor to be known by a friend as you know me, as a person who loves animals and especially dogs. Now that Toto is gone, my friends' dogs serve as my adopted pets. I experience joy reading about the good times friends have with their dogs and sorrow when they pass away. Thank you for thinking of me at a time like this, dear friend Kelly. My heart is with you today and in the difficult days to come.

  2. Hi Wendi and Shady! It's the first day of school here, and dark and rainy!

I loved the Beach Boys from day one, but didn't buy their albums, since I was just a young teen with not a large allowance. "Barbara Ann" is one of my favorites they covered, with more spunk than the original, which I also liked a lot. The slide shows with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Wendy" are great! "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is also a good hit song of the Boys, but I don't remember "Wendy". The slide shows feature photos of the guys that you just didn't see back in the day...thanks Wendi!

How about that Beatrice and Andrei!!! He just continues to please, doesn't he! This guy is so talented on his guitar, and Beatrice does great with "La Bamba"...love how she harmonizes with herself. That's the way to go if you can swing it! Fantastic duo!

I DO remember Bananarama-great group! "I Heard a Rumor" only sounds vague...but, makes me think of a new era and dance/music genre. But, OH, do I like "Cruel Summer", "Venus" (very cool), and "Waterloo"!

"Girlfriend", I like! I don't know the song, and it makes me think of a few of the girl groups from the 50's and 60's like the Pointer Sisters, even Gladys Knight! And, I don't know who O'Bryan is, but I did like "Lovelite"...seems like I've heard it before, maybe on Soul Train. I think you said Don Cornelius helped write this good dance song.

Okay Wendi, good job! Very good post. I appreciate the hard work that goes into these posts and presentations. Have a wonderful day, and what is left of this week. Take care, dear friend, Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for being the second person across the finish line in this week's Race to Shady's Place!

I'm glad you got so much enjoyment out of this sneak preview platter party thrown by new SPMM deejays Wendi and Nia along with returning veterans Nomi and Iris. As you can tell, each of their shows will cover a different time frame and style of music, with Nomi & Nia's Transitive Verve focusing on diversity - a mix of old and new crossing over various genres - and featuring talented singers and musicians around the world.

I'm glad you are Beach Boys fan. The perky, always cheerful Wendi Falkenberry will specialize in playing their best, including remastered hybrid sync edit performance vids when available. As you can see by the stats beneath "Wendy," the single fell short of the top 40 nationally, but it was big in my neck of the woods, and I chose it to be Wordless Wendi's theme song. Yessum, today's knowledgeable, hard-working and creative YouTube uploaders are scouring the archives to find rare, seldom seen pictures of artists like The Beach Boys. Their custom made vids are a treat for the eyes as well as the ears.

Yessum, that's a two year old video produced by Andrei and Beatrice. Both artists continue to soar in popularity and have branched out into different genres. In recent weeks, Bea has even tested the waters of Gothic Symphonic/Melodic metal, and her many fans love her all the more for giving that category a try. This cover of "La Bamba" by Andrei & Beatrice is pure joy!

In the last couple of years, "I Heard a Rumour" has become one of my favorite Banana-girl songs, possibly my top favorite. I remember our afternoon veejay playing the video heavily on the MTV style station where I worked at the time. "Girlfriend" and "Lovelight" were slick productions, and both were huge hits on the R&B survey. Here again, I distinctly recall both vids being played heavily at our station, but they were programmed to run on the evening segment and on weekends.

I hope Scootie did alright on his first day back at school. I know you must appreciate having a bit of a break, even if you are stuck with a dark and rainy day. I hope you are both well and in good spirits. Thanks again for arriving so early this week and for your excellent comment. Stick around. Coming up next Monday, the 23rd, veteran DJ Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsburg of WMEX takes us Cruisin' back to 1961 for a taste of his Boston-based top 40 radio show. Your memories will surely flow when you hear Arnie's song lineup. Until then, enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

  3. I love The Beach Boys. They had some real good songs.
La Bamba! I watched that movie about Ritchie Valens starring Lou Diamond Phillips. Such a good but sad movie.

And then Pebbles, I haven't heard that song in forever.

I listened to Bananarama just not that song. They had some other songs that I listened to though.

I definitely remember Lovelite. Haven't heard that one in forever either.

I never watched The Kids Are Alright though.
I recognized Naomi Marks from Sense8. Great show.
I like all the female superheros from the tv shows that I have been watching.

Hope you have a great week.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thanks for coming by on day one, dear friend! As third place finisher, the bronze medallion will hang around your neck at the awards ceremony. :)

Thanks a lot for joining the fun as Wordless Wendi introduces herself and three other SPMM radio personalities, their new shows in the pipeline for launch in 2022 here at Shady's Place.

Yessum, I saw that La Bamba movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens. It was a great film. For the past two years, Mrs. Shady and I have been watching L.D. Phillips in the role of Gil Arroyo on the TV procedural crime drama Prodigal Son. Unfortunately the series was recently canceled after two seasons.

I am delighted to learn that you remember Pebbles and that major crossover hit of hers from 1988. It cooks! I am also pleaseD that you remember various hits by Bananarama, the English dance-pop trio that went into the Guinness World Record book for achieving the world's highest number of chart entries by an all-female group.

Lovelite is another slickly produced urban R&B dance song and video. When I found that HQ/HD video on YouTube, I watched only the first few seconds to make sure of the quality before inserting it in today's post, unaware that it contains some whimsical nudity. Truth be told, I never knew this version existed. The MTV station where I worked at the time played an edited version on the air - no nudity. I read that this 6+ minute video is the original version, no doubt produced with the intention of having it aired late at night. However, I just read on Wiki: << The song's original music video became one of the first R&B videos to be banned from MTV, due to extensive nudity. >> Even so, the content is relatively harmless compared to a lot of the stuff I've seen in recent years.

Wendi Falkenberry was a main character in a very short-lived TV family sitcom that was yanked prematurely, in my opinion, and in the opinion of the series' many fans. The Wendi character will achieve "immortality" as "Wordless Wendi," one of my presenters at Shady's Place.

WOW - I am thrilled to find a friend who recognizes Nomi Marks and has actually watched Sense8! You're the first, Mary. Transgender superhero Nia Nal was on Supergirl for three seasons, but now that series has also been canceled after six seasons running.

Thank you again for your kind visit and marvelous comments, dear friend Mary. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    2. I did not know that Supergirl and Prodigal Son got cancelled. I loved those shows and was hoping to see them on Netflix. Thanks for the info.

    3. Hi, Mary!

Yessum, Prodigal Son got the ax before it had time to find its audience and catch on. I figured you might have been watching that series since it is deliciously dark and dangerous. Don't worry, Mary... one of the series' main characters, Ainsley Whitly, the TV reporter and Malcolm's ambitious but troubled younger sister, will be "immortalized" when she becomes host of "The I-Team," a new radio show coming soon to Shady's Place and station SPMM. There's more good news. Along with Nia Nal, Kara Danvers from Supergirl will also find a "forever home" as a Shady's Place presenter when she hosts a new radio show called "Kara Danvers Supertunes." So please stick around for the fun. In the meantime, you can indeed watch Supergirl on Netflix.

Thanks again for returning to chat, dear friend Mary. Please give my good buddy Falcor a hug and a peanut butter Kong and tell him it's from Shady. :) I've a got a new post starting tomorrow morning and hope you can swing by during it's 5 day run. Have a wonderful week, dear friend Mary!

  4. Here I am! It’s been a crazy week but I enjoyed listening to the music here which calmed my head down to be honest. I have had some very sad counselling involving abuse and one is a nice 73 year old lady who is being abused by her tenants! Listening to the Beach Boys and the fun 80s music plus that young girl who really can sing out La Bamba just relaxed me. Funny, last week hubby and I watched the movie about Brian Wilson and it was pretty good actually. Thank you for the music!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! A great big Wordless Wendi welcome to you!

I could tell by your blogging "body language" that you are having one of those weeks, and therefore I am all the more grateful that you made time for a visit to Shady's Place. I'm sorry to learn about the woman being abused by her tenants. I hesitate to call her elderly because I am almost 72 (with the emotional maturity of a toddler).

I'm so glad that the sounds of America's Beach Boys and Romanian spark plug Beatrice Florea had a calming effect on you. Beatrice won me over fast with her exuberance as she performed her cover of
the Ritchie Valens hit of the late 50s.

Thanks for letting me know that the Brian Wilson biopic is worth seeing. If you can find it, Mrs. Shady and I highly recommend the 2000 TV mini series The Beach Boys: An American Family. The two-parter is very well done and I know you and your hubby would enjoy it.

I'm thrilled that you appreciated the tunes in this teaser spotlighting new SPMM DJs and new shows coming to Shady's Place in 2022. Thanks again for dropping in and have a wonderful weekend, dear friend BB!

  5. I looked up Sense8 and saw that Nomi Marks is played by Jamie Clayton, a trans actress whose name was new to me. Or so I thought. I went to see if she was on Twitter and was surprised to find I was already following her! Apparently in the past I had heard of her somewhere. I see Sense8 is written and produced by (as they're known these days) Lily and Lana Wachowski, who gave the world the Matrix movies (and earlier the very good, if now very overlooked, Bound) and that's probably what piqued my interest. I don't get Netflix as I'm afraid it might cut into my Arby's allowance, but if ever there comes a day when I feel less stingy than I do now, I'll have to watch that show. Actually, when it comes free prime time television, I'm afraid that, for a variety of reasons, I've lost touch with that completely. While I was aware that there was a Supergirl show, I didn't know there was a trans character played by a trans actress. I do recognize the name Nicole Maines in relation to a trans-related court case a number of years ago.

I don't want to tell you what to post, but if you're going to have a show hosted by transwomen, ever think of playing Britney Spears? She's cis, but if you'll recall some time back a trans female YouTube celebrity by the name of Chris Crocker (who according to a news release I just happened upon today has changed her name to Cara Cunningham, though the old moniker is still on the YouTube account) posted a "Leave Britney Alone!" video that got a lot of attention. Who knows? Cara might end up following your blog (she's certainly welcome to follow mine. Maybe I should do something with Britney.)

Moving into safer territory, let me end this by reminding you that I love the Beach Boys. You say "Barbara Ann" hit the charts again in 1975? I recall a neighbor of mine having their Spirit of America album (the one with Mickey Mouse on the cover) at just about that time. I just now looked it up, and, yes, "Barbara Ann" was one of the tracks.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

That's all you got, good buddy? :) Thanks for burning the midnight oil to visit, do some research and leave another tremendous comment. (I only wish you had spread out your remarks over two or more comment forms - wink wink.)

Wordless Wendi welcomes you to her sneak preview of Shady's Place coming attractions - the new crop (and new breed) of TV characters who will assume new roles as celebrity presenters on SPMM Retrosonic Radio... the #1 station for a diverse and evolving nation.

Represented in this post are two fairly successful TV series and two that were canceled prematurely to the dismay and outrage of millions of fans, myself included. The Flash, the DC Comics series that is home to Iris West, is the most successful of the shows, renewed for an 8th season which is set to premiere this fall on November 16.

DC's Supergirl had a good run, lasting 6 seasons, but fans wanted more. However, I should add that Supergirl yielded a spin-off series, Superman & Lois, which premiered this year. In the title roles are Tyler Hoechlin, who played Superman on Supergirl and also appeared as the caped crusader on The Flash and Arrow, and Elizabeth "Bitsie" Tulloch as the new Lois Lane. Bitsie played Juliette and Eve on Grimm, another series Mrs. Shady and I watched and loved. Getting back to Supergirl, it is a series noted for casting diversity and for respectfully representing members of the LGBTQ community. One of its main characters, Alexandra "Alex" Danvers, played by Chyler Leigh, comes out as lesbian, while a second main character, Nia Nal - superheroine code name Dreamer - is the first transgender superhero on television. I very much admire actress and transgender rights activist Nicole Maines and read about her gender identity-based court case. Incidentally, Supergirl was nominated four times for a GLAAD Award which honors (according to Wiki:) << films, television shows, musicians and works of journalism that fairly, accurately and inclusively represent the LGBT community and issues relevant to the community. >>

Mrs. Shady and I follow/followed the above mentioned series The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, Grimm and Sense8, along with Legends of Tomorrow, the latter another show set in the DC Arrowverse. Legends' lead superheroine character, Sara Lance - alter-ego White Canary - is the first character from either the Marvel or DC Universe to be explicitly shown as bisexual in either the movies or TV shows.

The first season of Sense8 was awesome. The second season struggled a bit and the show got the ax. I admire the Nomi Marks/Michael character so much that I decided to make Nomi the only character to host two different regular radio series at Shady's Place, both of them focusing on diversity in music and culture. Nomi will star along with the gang from Sense8 in a show called Sense8 Sensibility, and with her "transistor sister," Nia Nal, in a second show called Transitory Verve. I very much admire Jamie Clayton, and Mrs. S and I enjoyed her role as a transgender woman (and cousin of the sitting president of the United States) in Designated Survivor, another fine series that ended too soon but which will be immortalized when two if its characters join The Shady Bunch at Shady's Place. I might also add that I am also pulling a character from the new David E. Kelley series Big Sky to serve as one of my deejays on SPMM. "Jerrie Kennedy" is a transfeminine character played by Jesse James Keitel. Wiki sez: << Keitel is non-binary and uses she/her and they/them pronouns. Big Sky made them the first nonbinary actor to play a nonbinary series regular on primetime television.

Thanks for sharing your Beach Boys memory. Stay tuned to hear the original version of "Barbara Ann" coming up in my very next post on Monday. I also thank you again for your late night visit and great comment, good buddy Kirk. Have a nice weekend!

  6. Good Morning Shady! I'm back from Chicago and catching up on the home front. I'm going to be knee deep in tomatoes today but had to stop by blogland and see what's happening. I was so happy to see the Beach Boys this AM! I love them still and every time I hear one of their songs I'm back in my young teen times wishing I was a California girl! I didn't recognize the song Wendy however. It's a good one though! I'm sure Richie Valens would love this rendition of LaBamba. I really liked it. The other songs featured I didn't know but the videos yanked me into the 80's with that 80's hair and outfits! So good times today here and I hope you have good times down south and didn't get bad weather from the hurricanes. Have a good weekend!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I was thinking about you this morning, dear friend, hoping all is well on your side of the screen, and wondering if you were back home in Ohio or detained in Chicago. I am very happy to see you and thank you for coming! Seems like things are AOK on your home front. Being knee deep in tomatoes is a lot better than being up to your neck in alligators, right? :)

Wordless Wendi will have you "wishin' & hopin'" that someday... some way... you will be a California girl. That's because Wendi fancies The Beach Boys and will play all of their best hits in Futuresonic Stereo Surround. Wendi's theme song is the showender, "Wendy," a sweet BB opus about love and loss that was not a huge hit nationally but a biggie in my neck of the woods. By the time you have experienced a few volumes of Wordless Wendi, the song "Wendy," which will play her off the air at the end of every show, will be a familiar oldie to your ears.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed Bea & Andrei's version of "La Bamba." Nobody spreads joy through singing better than Beatrice Florea.

It always makes me happy to show you a good time, YaYa. I'm glad you are back in Ashland and out picking produce in your garden. As a friend, you are like a great farmer - "out standing in your field." :) Have a safe and happy (and healthy) weekend!

  7. Hello Tom,

For some reason I didn't get email notification of your Wednesday post. This morning, I got to wondering what happened to you and decided since I'm hanging out around the house today that I'd pop over to check in with you. I'm sure glad that I did otherwise I would've missed the incredible music. Your 80s song picks I couldn't believe I hadn't heard any of them, even the one by the popular girl band Bananarama. I don't even remember OBryan Lovelite or Pebbles. Beatrice Flora did an amazing "LaBama" Cover. The young girl is talented. I hope she shoots to the stars as a recording artist. Thanks for sharing the music, my friend, and I'm sorry for being late to the party. Have a good weekend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! FYI - Blogger has permanently disabled the email notification function. Therefore, I regret that you will not be receiving them from now on. I would appreciate if you could find another way of keeping up to date on my new posts, even if it is simply by means of bookmarking my site and checking it every few days for a new post. Throughout the year, I publish a new post an average of every 5 or 6 days. A few times during the year, the spread is only 3 or 4 days and on rare occasions it is 7 days, depending on how the holidays and special anniversary posts fall on the calendar.

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this set of songs played by Wordless Wendi and her friends, the new crop of SPMM deejays coming next year. I'm always glad to introduce you to recordings you missed the first time around, including "I Heard A Rumour," "Lovelite" and "Girlfriend." All three videos were played heavily on the MTV station where I worked during the period. I am also pleased that you and other friends enjoy the zesty Romanian songstress Bea Florea. In recent months she has been demonstrating her versatility by performing everything from 50s girl group pop to Gothic, symphonic metal. YouTube fans love her.

Thanks again for hunting me down, dear friend Cathy. I do hope you can find a way to keep following my posts, because you are a very important friend and I don't want us to lose touch. When I visit you this coming Monday, I will have a new post running. I will remind you about it in my comment, if that's okay. I hope you and DH are having a great weekend. Thanks again for stopping by, Cathy!

  8. Hi Shady,

I absolutely love these songs and they made for great scrapbooking tunes!

I was reading Kirk's arguments and I have to digest, as well as research, some of his points before I can even reply. I'm not too familiar with Sense8 and I'm only familiar with Britney Spears. A lot of the LGBTQIA+ community loves her and that might be something to think about in the future.

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
