 A Medium Well Done
 ... is Rare!

Ladies and gentlemen...
there is electricity in the air tonight.

I am excited and honored to welcome back that
great visitor from the East... the famous seer...
sage... soothsayer... all knowing... all seeing...
all omniscient... and former road manager
for Shecky Shady's Caravan of Cackles...

Carnac..... the Magnificent!

Oh mighty Carnac,
I hold in my hand... the envelopes.

They have been hermetically sealed
and kept in mayonnaise jar on Doc
Severinsen's porch since noon today.

NO ONE knows the contents of these envelopes.

BUT YOU!... in your divine and borderline
mystical way, will ascertain the answers
without ever having seen the questions.
Is that not so, oh great one?

You are correct, Budweiser breath.

Let there be silence. I must have
complete silence as I concentrate
on the first envelope.

Hermetically sealed.
That's correct.
Since noon today.
Look, if they haven't bought
the premise by now...
they're never going to!

(ED laughs loudly) Hi-Yo!

Now let there be silence in the room...
(long pause)..... Gingersnaps.

Gingersnaps.

That's what I said, Spuds MacKenzie.
Is there an echo in here?

(Ed chortles as Johnny rips the end
off the envelope, blows it open and
removes the slip of paper)

What does Ginger do when
she's ticked-off?

(Ed laughs loudly)

On October 1, 1962...

...when The Tonight Show Starring
Johnny Carson made its debut...
this danceworthy ditty was rockin' you!

"Let's Dance" - Chris Montez
(Oct. 1962, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100/#6 Cash Box)

On May 22, 1992...

when Johnny hosted his final Tonight Show,
this R&B sizzler was riding high on the chart!

"My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)"
En Vogue (Apr/May 1992, highest chart pos.
#1 Cash Box and R&B/#2 Hot 100)

I hold in my hand..... the last envelope.

(crowd cheers loudly)

May a weird holy man turn your
sister's bedroom into a sweat lodge.

Give him a big round of applause,
ladies and gentlemen...
Carnac...
the Magnificent!

  1. Am I really the first one on this special day? Happy April Fool's day Shady! I'm in Chicago helping my sister out and Jordan is hopefully getting discharged today and Jack and Annabelle will hold down the fort in Ohio. It's been a very crazy end of March. Not only with Jordan but one of our surgeons passed away unexpectedly. She was more than just a Doc I worked with; she was also a friend. I don't consider the physicians I work with friends, but she was different. She was a mentor also and I learned a lot. So, to say the least, this has been an emotional time for our hospital and staff. But thankfully Jordan is recovering, although his kidneys will need to be monitored for a bit and can get home to his new house. Anyway, I enjoyed this post, and it brought back those fun memories of Johnny and Ed! I hope you have a great day and start to April. Spring is springing in our area so I hope it's nice by you also. Have a wonderful Easter weekend. We're going to celebrate on the next weekend so Jordan can recover and our son Jack gets back with his family from a vacation in Spain. Take care friend!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Congratulations on being the April Early Bird, dear friend! It's great to see you.

I am very relieved to learn that Jord is slated to be released from the horse-pistol after his alarming bout with Covid. I've been thinking about him day by day and happy now that he will be returning to the new house he purchased. I am sorry to know that one of your friends and mentors, a surgeon you have worked with, has died unexpectedly.

Yessum, the temperature has swung dramatically in our neck of the woods. Only a few days ago we were shivering. The last two days have topped 80 degrees. I must say I am enjoying the change after the harsh winter we had. Nice of you to delay your Easter celebration at The Pines until Jordan is back on his feet and Jackie and family return from Spain. I'm delighted that the Carnac sketch brought back fond memories of Johnny and Ed in the glory years of The Tonight Show.

Thanks again for coming so early. Happy April Fools' Day and have a wonderful Easter, dear friend YaYa!

  2. Happy April Fool's Day! I miss Johnny Carson. He knew how to handle an audience and I love his Carnac skit. I remember "Shish-boom-Bah"..the sound you hear when a sheep explodes. Something like that.
He witnessed all types of music and I am one for the first one. I love dancing to those tunes. The 2nd one is ok...i remember the song but never saw the video. They must love Bob Fosse. I will check out your friend's page and feel so bad because it costs so much money. Here, its free. And if serious, they look at you right away. . I hope, one day the U. S. Gets free health care. Take care and Harley says Woof Woof!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

The silver is yours, dear friend, and thank you for rushing over in the middle of your busy week!

I'm delighted that you remember Johnny Carson's character Carnac the Magnificent and even remember another of Carnac's zingers. That's a great one, and I think you got the wording exactly right! Yessum, popular music changed a lot during the years that Johnny hosted The Tonight Show. Isn't that terrific dance footage taken from an episode of Hollywood a Go Go? Those young dancers on the teen music show really knew their stuff.

Thank you for offering to check out Lizzie's Go Fund Me page. Both mother and daughter are coping with medical crises and could sure use some help. I envy you having access to health care. Maybe someday, one day, the leaders of our country will come to their senses.

Woof woof right back at my buddy Harley. Thanks again for taking a stroll down mammary lane with me today, dear friend BB. Take care, have a happy April Fools' Day, and I'll see you again tamale at the BBC.

  3. Happy April Fool's Day, Shady. I used to watch that show all the time, he was funny. EnVogue was so good. That's such a good song.

Thank you so much for sharing the fundraiser. I really appreciate that. My daughter is home now, she got home yesterday and she's still dealing with pneumonia but at least the sepsis is cleared up. There's a lot of doctor appointments in her near future. I hope you have a nice Easter.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thank you for making time to visit Shady's Place in the midst of all the turmoil you've been experiencing, dear friend. It means a lot to me. I'm pleased to know that you were a regular viewer of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and also know and like En Vogue and the R&B song they recorded that was riding high on the charts when Johnny left the show.

I am overjoyed to know that Lizzie has returned home. Being back in familiar surroundings should help speed her recovery. I certainly hope that will be the case. Yessum, all those follow-up doctor visits are a pain, but at least she is on the road to wellness now. Glad I could help.

Happy April Fools' Day and have a wonderful Easter, dear friend Mary!

  4. Hello Dear Shady. I am not sure if it is just me but I can't see a lot of your photos. (or maybe that's the April Fools?) I do see the music videos and Let's Dance is a good one to play when I get in the studio and start my projects!

Sorry to hear about Mary and her daughter but I see that there has been some improvement and that's great.

    Have a terrific month!

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend!

I don't know what's going on with my page. Last month, as soon as I published Belle's post, I began experiencing intermittent problems with the page loading correctly. Some of the pictures started showing up blank white. Now it is happening again. I can't explain it because this is one of the shortest posts I have run in recent memory. Posts with far greater amounts of pictures have loaded properly in the past. Try refreshing the page. That simple step always corrects the problem immediately. Maybe Blogger.com is having an issue.

I'm pleased that you like the 1962 Chris Montez hit "Let's Dance." I was thrilled to find that nicely restored clip from Hollywood a Go Go showing the gang performing various types of dances.

Thanks for wishing Mary and her daughter well. Happy April Fools' Day to you and my buddy Benny. Have a great month and a satisfying A to Z Challenge, dear friend Janet!

  5. Johnny Carson was the best. I remember seeing him in Las Vegas in the mid-70s and he was great.
I'm sorry to hear of your friend Mary's troubles. I'll check out the page.

Pat and I wish you and Mrs. Shady a nice April.

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Thanks for coming over on April Fools' Day, dear friend! I'm delighted to find out that you were a fan of Johnny Carson. I certainly was too. I worked nights at an NBC TV station and for years watched every episode of The Tonight Show with coworkers in the control room. His Carnac sketch was one of the best and most memorable, along with Art Fern's Tea Time Movie pictured in the post at the end off the Carnac bit. You were lucky to have seen Johnny in Las Vegas in the mid 70s.

Thank you for clicking over to read what happened to Mary's daughter. Let us all wish her a speedy and complete recovery.

Thanks again for joining the April Fools' Day fun, dear friend Kelly. Have a great April and I will see you again when I return to blogging at the end of the month!

  6. Tom,

What fine memories you stoked up on this April Fools day! Late night TV was ruled by three comedians over the years: Steve Allen, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. The best of the three was Carson who was at his best when he was Carnac, which was always well done. (As was your presentation of the magnificent one). No one even comes close in today's late night comedy -- I really miss it. Perhaps Don McLean, even though 80 years old now, could write a song entitled "Bye, Bye American Humor" to honor late night entertainment.

    Thanks for the memory,
    Jim

p.s. Took me six refreshes to display all the blog content

    1. Hi, Jim!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the discussion of my 2026 April Fools' post, my friend! I had no idea you were a Johnny Carson fan, same as me. I agree that he was king of late night TV and that his departure from hosting The Tonight Show left a tremendous void. (I watched and loved Steve Allen as well.) Glad you agree that Carnac the Magnificent was a sketch worthy of bringing back to life in this post.

I am stumped about the ongoing page loading problems that you, I and others are encountering. I have never needed to reload more than once for the pictures to pop into place. What's more, this is one of the shortest posts I have published in years, deepening the mystery. I just checked my two longest posts, the ones I put together about the York County racing scene, and all of the pics load just fine on both of them.

Try this one yourself and let me know if it loads properly for you:

Thanks again for joining the fun on April Fools' Day, Jim. Have a great month. I plan to return on the 30th with my next post, another edition of our Saved By The Dell series. See you then!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for coming over, good buddy, and happy April Fools' to you! It would have been an anachronism for us to hear Bowie's 1983 hit song "Let's Dance (Put on your red shoes and dance the blues)" while watching the kids dance on a mid 1960s episode of Hollywood a Go-Go. Nevertheless, such a hybrid might have been fun to watch. Nowadays, any given song, especially if it summons the listener to the dance floor, is liable to have a custom YouTube video produced that syncs the original music track with film footage borrowed from a completely unrelated movie or TV show. Chris Montez, the singer who waxed this 1962 "Let's Dance" ditty, is still with us at age 83.

Yes, it's an amazing streak of bad luck for Mary and her daughter. Let's hope they both continue on the mend. Thanks again for helping me to salivate April Fools' Day, good buddy Alex. I'll be back April 30 and hope to see you then!

  8. Hi dear friend Shady, I saw Janet's comment. If she refreshes her screen she will be able to see all your images.
I remember Johnny Carson. I enjoyed watching him.
My doctor told me that my latest blood test showed my sugar to be high. Not dangerously so, but high. I did make a post on a health update because many of my blog friends like to know about this.
So far the tests that have been done in reference to my difficulty swallowing and chronic cough have shown no abnormalities. So my doctor has put me on a list to see a gastroenterologist. This could take 3 months.
At any rate, thank you so much for sharing your posts my dear friend, I really appreciate it as well as your friendship 😊
Happy Easter 🐰 🐣 💓 to you and Mrs. Shady.

    1. Hi, Linda!

Welcome in, dear friend! I'm delighted to have you join me in Shady's clubhouse for my annual Just For Laughs style gag post in observance of April Fools' Day.

Yessum, to anyone who is reading this reply and finding white squares up and down the blog where pictures ought to be, try refreshing the page one or more times. It should clear up the problem. I sought help on this matter from the Bing AI and learned that Google and Blogger.com have made technical changes that are affecting image loading. Hopefully they will be resolved soon. Thank you all for your patience!

I'm thrilled to know that you watched The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. I also loved Steve Allen and Jack Paar, the two show hosts that came before Johnny along with David Letterman, host of Late Night and Late Show With David Letterman. I discovered three interesting facts about Dave that I didn't know before. He points to Johnny Carson as his mentor and biggest influence. He surpassed his friend and mentor Johnny Carson as the longest-serving late-night talk show host in American television history. He also co-owns an auto racing team.

Sorry to know your blood sugar is testing higher than normal. I hope the gastroenterologist can find a way to help with your persistent cough and difficulty swallowing. I will continue to think about you and send healing wishes your way, Linda.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the post. Happy Easter to you as well, dear friend Linda. I will return to blogging at the end of the month and hope to reconnect with you then!
