Whodunit?... with Nick and Audrey Spitz!

This is how you make an entrance, baby!

Hi there, folks! Think we look like Jennifer Aniston
and Adam Sandler? Yeah, we get that a lot.

Actually, we're Nick and Audrey Spitz, stars of
the hit Netflix original movie Murder Mystery.

As you can see, we're having a blast playing detective, examining
clues and trying to figure out who did the dastardly deed -
Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard or Mrs. Peacock.

While we try to solve our case we'd like to bust your brain with a friendly game
of Whodunit. Here's how it works. We'll give you the titles of 7 hit records
along with some additional clues. See if you can tell us Whodunit -
who is the artist, group or band that recorded the song?

If you're ready to play, let's put the pedal to the metal and find out if
you've got what it takes to be a first class dick.  No offense intended.
Would it have been better if I used the term gumshoe?

RECORD #1:

The song "Turn Around, Look At Me"
was first recorded in 1961 by country
crooner Glen Campbell. Covers were
released by the Lettermen and by the
Bee Gees, but the most successful
version of all was released in 1968
by the Pittsburgh vocal group also
known for doing "You're The One,"
"Five O'Clock World" and a cover
of the Bobby Helms hit of the
50s, "My Special Angel."

Originally released August 26, 1964, on the B side of "Ride The Wild Surf,"

The 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.

WHODUNIT?

RECORD #5:

Named after a tropical cocktail, this 80s girl trio from Holland broke through
on an international scale in 1985 when two of their disco soul singles,
"Body And Soul" and "History," made the top 10 on the UK chart.
The latter also reached the top 3 on the U.S. Dance chart.

WHODUNIT?

RECORD #6:

This actor and comedian was a frequent host on Saturday Night Live
and joined the regular cast in the mid 80s. His most famous recurring
sketch was a parody of an Argentine-American actor Fernando Lamas
whose catchphrase was "You look... mahvelous!" In 1985 the comic
released the single "You Look Marvelous" along with a music video
in which he does a spot-on imitation of Lamas. The record was a
minor hit in the U.S. and reached the top 20 in Canada.

WHODUNIT?

RECORD #7:

For decades he played the role of Danny Romalotti, Cricket's soul mate
on the hit soap opera The Young and the Restless. He was rock star on
the program and he was also a rocker in real life. In 1989 he topped

in 1973 by English singer David Essex.

You will be inducted into the Music Detective Hall of Fame

Mike Hammer down. Charlie Chan - U Da Man. Way to go, Columbo!

5 CORRECT

Nice try, Sherlock! You're a middling, mediocre Magnum, P.I.

Dick Tracy and you sure as hell aren't Cagney & Lacey!

3 OR 4 CORRECT

What the hay, at least you gave it your best shot (and failed).
Nancy Drew sure ain't you! Philip Trent got up and went.
Adrian Monk got no spunk. Inspector Clouseau's
got a long way to go!

1 OR 2 CORRECT

No! Not good! Bad! Face it. You're a defective detective!
Boston Blackie? Not exactly! Bulldog Drummond's got fleas!
Philip Marlowe set the bar low!

0 (GOOSE EGG, NONE) CORRECT

TIMBER! You flunked the course! Sam Spade fell asleep in the shade.
Holy dumbed-down Barney Fife, Batman! Peter Gunn ain't got none.
Nero Wolfe's been outfoxed. Kojak? NO, Jack!

Shhhhhh! We need you to keep this on the down low because we're still
working our Murder Mystery, but you'll be happy to know that we'll be
back soon to play another exciting game of Whodunit? Stick around!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for being the early bird again this week, good buddy! I'm happy to know you correctly named four of the artists in Nick and Audrey's Whodunit game. In doing so, you jump into first place and have a good shot at winning a medal by the time the contest ends six days from now. :)

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Alex!

    1. Hi, Arleen!

How are you, dear friend? Welcome back to Shady's Place and thank you for dropping in!

I'm happy to know you got at least one correct answer on the Whodunit quiz. If you knew that parody song by Billy Crystal then I am guessing you were a regular viewer of Saturday Night Live back in the 80s, the period I consider the best in the series' history. Billy's imitation of Fernando Lamas was brilliant.

If you're in the mood for a cute, charming comedy mystery movie, I urge you to get on Netflix if you have it and watch this 2019 original film Murder Mystery. The movie tickled my fancy to such an extent that I have watched it twice so far and was inspired to turn it into a blog series.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Arleen!

  3. I think I might be that guy on My Favorite Martian who could never prove Uncle Martin was from Mars. Though I recognized most of the songs, I only got Nick Lowe and Billy Crystal, and as far as the latter is concerned, it's just because I remember him playing that character on SNL. By the way, this may be a minority opinion, but I think Crystal dominated that version of the show a little too much. As far as I'm concerned, Martin Short was the true comic genius of that era.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming over, good buddy!

Congratulations, my friend. You correctly named two of the seven artists in this brain buster challenge. That means you vault into second place behind Alex with Arleen clinging to third place. As I told Arleen, I like the SNL cast of the 80s even more than the cast of the 70s. I recently named my favorite SNL players on Shadow of a Doubt. I tend to agree with you that Billy Crystal became overexposed, too much of a good thing, and the same was true of Steve Martin, in my opinion. I agree with you that Martin Short is a comic genius who perhaps didn't get his share of the spotlight and recognition during his stint on SNL.

For 1.5 hours worth of summertime fun and escapism, I highly recommend this Adam Sandler - Jennifer Aniston movie on Netflix.

Thanks again for popping in, Kirk. By the way, good buddy, I've got to tell you something. You look... mahvelous!... and I don't say that to everybody.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

  4. I had no idea anyone had done a cover of Rock On by David Essex. (I'm assuming the Essex version was the original?) I still prefer David Essex, but Michal Damian's version sounds pretty good!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming to play Whodunit with the stars of the new Neflix film Murder Mystery!

Yessum, "Rock On" was penned and originally recorded by English glam rock artist David Essex. May I assume that you do not watch The Young and the Restless? Michael Damian has been appearing on the soap for decades, and around the time he released this cover of "Rock On," they allowed him to promote the record on the show by having his rock star character Danny perform a live concert. I'm delighted to know you like Damian's updated version. Following his chart-topping success with "Rock On," Michael Damian landed two more singles on the pop chart in the top 20 to top 30 range - "Cover Of Love" and "Was It Nothing At All," both released that same year, 1989. It's interesting to note that Damian was discovered by the producers of Y&R in 1981 when he sang his first charting single, "She Did It," on American Bandstand, and he won the role of Danny Romalotti as a result.

Thanks again for coming to play, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  5. No, my daytime drama days are long past. When I did watch, I was a fan of the ABC lineup: All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital. I'll never forget Herb Alpert's Rise gaining popularity when it featured in a Luke & Laura segment during the "summer of love".

    2. Hi again, Kelly, and hi there, cat!

Kelly - I started watching Y&R in the early 70s when it first went on the air. I started watching One Life To Live (with Tommy Lee Jones) and General Hospital a few years before that. Those were my three soaps. I well remember the Herb Alpert instrumental "Rise" used as Luke & Laura's love theme when they were the hottest couple and story line in daytime drama. Genie Francis spent a few years in a key role on Y&R in the new millennium.

Thanks again for coming to chat, dear friend Kelly!

cat - thanks for sharing these interesting tidbits. It's fun knowing that we have GH in common. Emma Samms as Holly Sutton Scorpio was my favorite during the 80s. I didn't watch any of those children's shows, but again, I am always eager to learn more about your past.

      Lubbins to you, dear cat!

    1. Hi, Gayle!

Thanks for coming, dear friend! I am surprised to learn that you can't stand Jennifer Aniston or Adam Sandler. Truth be told, I was reluctant to watch this movie because I grew tired of Sandler's shtick years ago. The only recent film of his that I truly enjoyed is Punch Drunk Love in which he played a troubled eccentric with a dark side. I haven't paid much attention to Jennifer Aniston since her early years on Friends. Imagine what a pleasant surprise it was for me when I watched this newly released film Murder Mystery and loved both of their performances. The chemistry between the two is palpable, probably because they are reportedly close friends in real life. Murder Mystery is a major hit, the most watched film debut in Netflix history. There is talk of Sandler and Aniston doing more projects together, possibly in the same role as the married couple, Nick and Audrey Spitz.

I'm sorry you didn't feel like testing your musical knowledge by trying to guess the recording artists and listening to the songs. I hope to reel you in with my next post in which I observe a special 60th anniversary. Stick around for that.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Gayle!

  8. Tom,

What fun and...oh, my I did a horrible job! I only named 1 right and if it weren't for your clues I might not have know that Billy Crystal recorded a song. That's totally new2me. *rolleyes* I was hoping I might score some points on song title recognition but that didn't go down too well, either. I believe there were only 2 out of the 7 that I know. *smack forehead*

Now, let tell you we saw 'Murder Mystery' a few weeks ago. It was a great fun movie. I was happily surprised that it didn't turn out to be a medicore film like so many of the newer ones are today. I'm a huge Jennifer Aniston fan. Her dad, John, played on the daytime soap, 'Days of Our Lives' as Victor Kiriakis. I found it interesting according to Wikipedia, John's bestfriend is Jennifer's godfather. Do you care to guess? I would've never figured it out but none other than Telly Salvalos. I might have flopped on the game but loved your post all the same. Thanks for visiting earlier this morning, my friend. Have a good day!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I am delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to play a friendly game of Whodunit with Nick and Audrey Spitz! I am relieved to find at least one friend who has actually seen this fun movie, Murder Mystery, and who actually likes Jennifer Aniston. I must tell you that I gained new respect for Jennifer from watching this movie. She is an amazing comedic actress with excellent comic timing and subtle body language. If you watch the way she moves about in her scenes, you can't help but smile in appreciation. As Billy Crystal likes to say, "See what she did there?" Critics are saying this is the best movie in years for both stars - Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston - and there is talk of them continuing to make Netflix movies together, possibly as the same married couple. I would love to see that. They could travel the world solving murder mysteries together. Yessum, I recently read that Telly Savalas was Jen's godfather, and I vaguely recall reading years ago when she first made a splash as Rachel on Friends that her dad played Victor Kiriakis on Days.

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed taking the brain buster challenge, even though you didn't score well. If you got only one answer correct, then you are tied with Arleen for third place. If you got two right, you are tied with Kirk for second place and in the running for a silver medal. :) I plan to turn Whodunit into a series, so stay tuned for more tunetastic fun that will test your I.Q. as a mewsical detective.

As always it is such a pleasure to exchange visits with you, dear friend Cathy. Thank you again for coming by and enjoy the rest of your week!

I'm glad you agree with me. I read that Jennifer and Adam are close friends in real life, and that translated to their on-screen chemistry. You really believe they are a married couple. 9. Hi Shady...what a trip! You'll be ashamed, I only got one artist right even though I recognized a few of the songs. It was your third offering that I can't even spell or pronounce by Jan and Dean! I almost always know their voices! But, sad to say, I didn't like the song.

"Turn Around Look at Me is a beautiful song, but I didn't know the artist. Gosh I didn't realize it was recorded and performed by others.

How funny, "You Look Marvelous" with Billy Crystal. I have always liked him. There were some years I didn't see SNL, and I'm glad for this one because it really made my day! What a fabulous video, great performances...love, love, love it! Thanks for bringing it out!

Pac Man Fever was great! I had not heard the song before, and got a real kick out of it. What a cute song and video. Great guitar player! "History" was a fun video too. It took me a minute, then I got into it, haha! The song is a good one!

Sooo...this "Defective Detective" needs to get back to the books, huh?
BUT WAIT! Earth to Suzanne..."Rock On" has always been one of my favorite dance tunes, and that Michael Damian is a real cutie! Love this video too.

I've been looking at the previews of the Murder Mystery movie on Netflix, and will have to watch it soon. It looks to be pretty funny, and they are two of my favorite people.

I guess all is not in vain. Even though I didn't know them all, I sure did enjoy. It's good to see you Shady. I apologize for being so late, I came by yesterday, but had to leave before I finished your post. Take care, dear friend.♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How are you, dear friend? I'm excited to see you! Thanks for coming over to test your prowess as a music detective with Nick and Audrey Spitz. I do hope you watch Murder Mystery. It's a hoot and the chemistry between Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston is excellent. You also get to see the playgrounds of the rich and famous - exotic international ports of call, spectacular scenery and cityscapes, yachts, etc. It's great fun and I watched it twice so far. I might not be done yet!

You only guessed one answer correctly, dearie? Well at least you didn't flunk the course. I'd hate for you to have to wear the dunce cap. :) Cheer up. By getting one song right, you vaulted into third place along with Arleen and Cathy. The tie will be broken a few days from now when I ask the three of you to compete to see who can be the first to make fire from flint stones and wood shavings. :)

I'm sorry you don't care for that Jan And Dean B side. I always liked it. I never gave it much thought over the years, but it recently occurred to me that the Vogues' mellow hit "Turn Around, Look At Me" is one of those stalker songs like "Every Breath You Take." It's creepy when you listen to the words, and that music video I posted illustrates the point. I'm delighted you got a kick out of Billy Crystal's parody song. He was really hot in the 80s and 90s. I was hooked on Pac-Man in the early 80s and I well remember the novelty hit "Pac-Man Fever" being rush released to capitalize on the video game craze. I'm pleased you enjoyed Mai Tai this early in the day. (It's 5 o'clock somewhere :) If you think Michael Damian is a cutie, watch out-- he is aka Danny Romalotti and he belongs to Cricket Blair! :)

You might be a "defective detective" but you are a first rate, top notch, super-duper friend. I'm so glad you enjoyed the post. Stay tuned because I am turning Whodunit into a series and Nick & Audrey will be back soon to bust your brain with another set of songs by hard-to-name artists, groups and bands - most of them one-hit-wonders.

Thanks again for joining the fun and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Suzanne!

  10. I guess I didn't get the stalking vibes on "Turn Around Look at Me". I think my focus was more on the musical vocals and harmonies, than the words. But the video does suggest some weirdness. She has a concerned look on her fact throughout the song. I can, however see the meaning in "Every Breath You Take". It's like he's just taking possession of her. Good detective work Shady! ♫

    1. Ha! Thanks, dear Suzanne!

I might be a defective detective myself. Over the years I never read anything to suggest that "Turn Around, Look at Me" is a stalker song. It is simply an observation I came up with as I put this post together. That, by the way, is not the official music video for the song. It is a 21st century custom sync video. In choosing that clip, which appears to be footage from an old foreign film, (the lyrics are superimposed in Portuguese), the YouTube producer/uploader seems to agree with my impression of the song.

Thanks again for coming to play with me today, Suzanne. I love having you were. I hope Scootie is enjoying his summer break and that the two of you aren't baking in the Texas heat. It is very hot and steamy here, making me miss the Central Highlands of Mexico where Mrs. S and I spent our two week vacation.

I feel ashamed to admit that I got a goose egg, but I did learn about "new" music! I liked what I heard and I'm going to check out more of this music. The library has a few of Nick Lowe's CDs and I might check them out. I can't wait for other trivia!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

To answer your question, Netflix is $7.99/mo. and that is the only charge I know of.

Hey, if you got a goose egg on the mom & pop quiz, the good news is that you are in 4th place, which ain't too shabby! :)

Nick Lowe is basically a one-hit-wonder in the U.S. His only other single to reach the Hot 100 was "I Knew The Bride (When She Use To Rock And Roll)" which only made it to #77. Nick placed three other singles on the Bubbling Under chart: "So It Goes" (#109), "Switch Board Susan" (#107) and "Half A Boy And Half A Man" (#110).

Thanks for your return visit and comment, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

That's not bad! I think I'm paying $6.99/month for Hulu and that's for basic service and not TV or whatever. They had so many services and I wanted to watch baseball, so I got the cheapest. Turns out, I could subscribe through my phone plan and did that instead. Oh well.

:D "Switch Board Susan" sounds familiar. I have to shelf-read the CDs as a project and I love looking at album art while I shelf-read. Like when I shelve books, cover art usually draws me in. :)

Happy Sunday, dear friend. Enjoy your evening and week ahead.

  14. Hi Shady!

I love games like this! That's not to say I'm any good at it. I pictured Billy Crystal's face, but not his name. I have to believe the little old lady from Pasadena put Jan and Dean up to the Anaheim (what in the world?) song ;-) I remember the Cruel to be Kind song, but clearly never knew who Nick Lowe was.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Luke and Laura flashback thread. I couldn't resist listening to "Rise" again - twice!
Tommy Lee Jones was on General Hospital?!
I absolutely plan to see Murder Mystery, and you did a fantastic job promoting it ;-)
    Happy July, my friend!

    1. Hi, diedre!

I'm thrilled to see you, dear friend. Thanks for coming by! I'm happy to know you enjoy brain buster music trivia games like this one invented by Nick and Audrey. (They are turning Whodunit into a series here on Shady's Place.)

I think you're right about Jan & Dean, diedre. Based on the lyrics, the surf rock duo's novelty record was surely inspired by the success of their earlier single "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena." Check out some of the lines:

The little old ladies wait in wild anticipation
For the meetings of the double-A-C A-S-S-N

They tool around town in their big Grand Prixes
Sittin' in their bucket seats, shootin' the breeze
You know that all week long they put up jam and preserves
And on weekends they negotiate curves

The meeting breaks up with a thunderous roar
Then there's a mad mad rush for the big oak door
They run to their cars like the start at Le Mans
Then they go spinnin' donuts in their lawns

Many of the artists represented in this series will be one-hit-wonders like Nick Lowe. Technically, Nick had another hit entitled "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass." It reached #7 in the UK but failed to chart in the U.S.

It means a lot to me that you read the other comments and replies. That's a sign of a conscientious blogger who genuinely takes an interest in the material presented. You are a great friend! Yessum, I watched those three daytime dramas and loved the peak years of Luke and Laura's romance. Tommy Lee Jones was a regular cast member on One Life To Live, not General Hospital. I urge you to watch Murder Mystery. It's lighthearted fun and you get to travel overseas to the playgrounds of the rich and famous.

Thank you again, so very much, for your kind and generous comment, dear friend diedre. I'll see you next week when you do your monthly IWSG piece. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Remember Peter Lawford's quip: "the LATE Marilyn Monroe" at JFK's birthday party? :)

I remembered to click back here first thing and look for your comment, dear friend. Thanks for taking a look at the post and playing Whodunit with Nick and Audrey. Hey, if you got correctly guessed two of the artists, then you are tied for second place and share a silver medal with Kirk. I'm glad you got a kick out of Billy Crystal's "You Look Marvelous."

Thanks again for coming, dear friend BB!
