JUKEBOX GIANTS
THAT TIME FORGOT!
Hello, friends! Dell Rat Tom
welcoming you to volume 20
of my exclusive 36-part
Shady's Place series
SAVED
BY THE
DELL
This series was made possible by Jim Sieling, my good friend
in York, and the husband of John Ettline's niece Nancy.
Jim Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
As you recall, Jim acquired the Dell's Seeburg jukebox (below)
and many of the records that played on it through the decades.
Keep in mind that the Dell had two jukeboxes - one in Helen's
snack bar up at the house, the other down in "The Barn" -
the dance hall John had built onto the barn and garage.
When Jim took possession of the Dell's record collection,
he discovered, to his dismay and ours, that many of
the discs had been improperly handled and stored.
Simply put - they were filthy.
Mice (Dell rats?) had made a home among the records, and at least
one snake (a Violet Hill viper?) had slithered in looking for a meal.
Jim undertook the mammoth job of cleaning, organizing and cataloging
the records, then sent me the finished alphabetical list. There are 6,065
records on Jim's list including Christmas records, 12,130 songs in all!
My series brings you the 180 best Dell jukebox songs from 1955
through 1963, a period long before I arrived on the scene.
This series is dedicated to
the memory of Nancy Sieling.
Nancy Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
Nancy, who was John Ettline's niece and Jim's wife, passed away in 2020.
Over the years, Nancy's generous contributions of pictures, information
and Shady Dell memorabilia greatly enhanced the quality of both of my
Dell-themed blogs. We have Nancy to thank for rescuing many of the
Dell's priceless platters when they were art risk of being thrown into
a trash dumpster and destroyed, hence the name of my series...
SAVED BY THE BELL DELL
Of course, we also have Jim to thank for tackling the enormous
task of cleaning, organizing and cataloging these 6,065 records!
Okay, it's time to use your imagination. Pretend that you are
at the Dell looking at the musical menu on the jukebox.

Good morning, Shady! Pat and I got here early! I was going to say I didn't know any of these songs (doo wop and early 60s are not my fave) until I got to the last one. I LOVE "mother-in-law" by Ernie K-Doe and have it in my iTunes library!!
ReplyDeleteAs always, I enjoyed the visual trip down memory lane AND all the bygone fashions.
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteYessum, you and my buddy Pat are the Early Birds for sure. Thank you!
Ha! It's neato that you not only remember the "Mother-In-Law" song, but like it and actually have it in your own iTunes library. Beware! The ditty is an earworm, as I am sure you discovered. The song rolling around in my head all morning is the first in the post: "Once In A While." That one is an old standard first published in 1937 and initially made popular by bandleader Tommy Dorsey and later by singer Patti Page in the years before the Brooklyn based doo-wop group The Chimes waxed it.
i'm glad you enjoyed the pics in the post as well. Thank you again for hustling over so early and have a wonderful weekend, dear friend Kelly!
Shady! Nice to see you again. I hope all is well with you and your family. I unfortunately didn't know these songs but I did like some of them. Not really my genre but it's always interesting to see what kind of music was playing at that time.
ReplyDeleteThe fashion in those magazines is also fun to see. And of course I love the girl and her wiener dog. It's also fun seeing actors and actresses that younger people have no idea who they are now but that I remember seeing when I was a kid. It was a fun trip down these memories. Have a good rest of the month. Until next time.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteYou and my buddy Falcor take second place in an exciting nose-to-nose photo finish, dear friend. Thanks for being here for Vol. 20 of my series Saved.
The timeline of the series is is currently at 1961. Given your tender age (compared to mine), I am not surprised that you don't know many songs from that year. It won't help much as we progress through volumes 21 thru 36 either because the series comes to a close at the end of 1963, still awfully long ago for someone your age to be remembering the records released that year.
Glad you like the covers of Calling All Girls which, through the years, featured the blonde girl and her pet sausage hound. Be sure to show Falcor. I am pleased to know that you do recognize some of the celebrities from this period. Hey, don't miss Gorgo and Beast of Yucca Flats. Both flicks won 50 Academy Awards! :)
I really appreciate your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary. Please take good care of yourself, your daughter and my buddy Falcor. I am scheduled to return with my next post July 15. Hope to see you then!
Hello my dear friend Shady! Wow! I love the green polka dot dress on the girl on the Seventeen Magazine (hope I got the magazine right).
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to see the 45 records in such a filthy state! I love to clean and organize, and I take care of my things (even though I don't have a lot of things, because I cannot stand clutter or too many things, if you get what I mean), but whatever I have I take good care of it!
The Harvey comic with the Saved by the Bell...although I never had that particular comic, my father often purchased them for me. Usually (if I recall accurately), Richie Rich, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Hot Stuff, Wendy, Little Dot, Little Lotta, Spooky, Blondie, Little Audrey. Those were my favourites!
As far as Peyton Place goes, my mother loved that serial! She watched it all the time!
My parents loved Dean Martin's music. They also loved honky tonk piano music as well!
Hi, Linda! Thanks for making it over on day one to finish third and fourth in the race to Shady's Place, dear friend! :)
DeleteYessum, isn't that a striking green polka dot dress worn by the model on the cover of the March 1961 issue of Seventeen? You and I are so much alike, Linda. Living in a cluttered environment makes me crazy. Alas, Mrs. Shady happens to be the undisputed Queen of Clutter! :) She leaves her stuff strewn all over the house. If there is a square inch of horizontal space to be found anywhere, she will have it covered with something in no time. :) I, on the other hand, appreciate simplicity and more of a minimalist environment. I had two record collections over the years. As a teenager and twenty-something, I lacked the maturity and knowhow to adequately care for my first collection. Therefore, my records quickly lost their value as collectibles. The second time around, when I was in my fifties, I knew how to properly clean and store my records and was very proud of them. Believe it or not, I gave my entire pristine collection away before moving north from Florida. Wow! You rattled off the names of many comics in the Harvey series. I didn't read any of those. As I think I told you before, my big brother and I lounged around the bedroom reading horror comics. I didn't watch Peyton Place, but I did enjoy Dean Martin's crooning along with his movies with Jerry Lewis and his TV shows. My dad loved the country/Nashville sound of pianist Floyd Cramer.
(next comment box)
Seeing Gregory Peck's name on a movie in this post reminds me of my favourite movie with him! The Omen! Wow, what a movie! Then the sequel....Damian? Yes, he was never killed and came back!
ReplyDeleteAnd seeing a Disney classic movie in your post...one of my favourite Disney movies is That Darn Cat! That naughty, beautiful Siamese cat! I read the book when I was in my 20s and it made me laugh so hard! So did the movie!
I always loved Fred MacMurray! The My Three Sons TV show, but I will have to go back and see a couple of movies with him because my memories of this are kind of vague.
Thank you so much for sharing, dear Shady, and I hope you are having a wonder filled weekend, both you and Mrs. Shady.
Yessum, Gregory Peck was a fine actor. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Like you, I have seen Omen and Damián: Omen 2. I loved gregory Peck along with Robt. Mitchum in the 1962 psycho thriller movie Cape Fear. I also thoroughly enjoyed the 1991 version of Cape Fear starring Nick Nolte and Robt. De Niro. And now, there's a brand new Cape Fear TV series starring Amy Adams that premiered a couple of weeks ago. I am very eager to see it I can tell from your posts that you love cats, but I don't think I ever saw That Darn Cat. I did see The Absent-Minded Professor, Gorgo and Beast of Yucca Flats among the films featured in the post.
DeleteAs always, you generously took time to thoroughly examine my content and respond to it in great detail. I appreciate that, Linda! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend as well. Take care of yourself, dear friend. Enjoy beautiful Montreal as summer gets underway and I will see you again when I return to blogging around July 20.
I am here and ready to dance, but not in those bikinis..im not going to scare the public. I enjoyed all the songs and how they work so well with the times and the fashions! Yellow and orange just have been big then, but they are not my favs...I'll go with the blues and lavenders. It's funny how not much has changed when it comes to what to read in the magazines. The quizzes and what is going on withe love lives of the famous. Little did they know about Troy, eh? I am loving all these movie posters! I would love to see that film with Dana Andrews which sounds so melodramatic. I cant picture Jeanne Crain as a blackmailed. That one puc of Kirk Douglas makes him look like he just finished a picture about Satan. I'd love to see these monster flicks and you know it'll be good with Tor Johnson. I will take those sporty looking shirts rather than the cutesy ones...lol an excellent post as always. Thank you for always posting on my blog...you are just great!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteI'm delighted that you made it over for part 20 of Saved, dear friend. Thank you for making time to check it out! Yessum, dancing is permitted and encouraged, but there is a strict dress code here at Shady's Place. You must wear a bikini. :)
I'm pleased that you liked the assortment of celeb gossip mags and movie posters in this volume. I well remember actor Dana Andrews appearing in films I watched as a kid and teenager, including Curse Of The Demon, Frozen Dead and Hot Rods To Hell, the latter, a 1967 juvenile delinquent/teensploitation flick also co-starring Jeanne Crain as his wife. Swedish pro wrestler and actor Tor Johnson, also billed as Thor Johnson and Super Swedish Angel, scared the pants off me at the age of six when I went to see his horror movie The Black Sleep aka Dr. Cadman's Secret. Black Sleep and The Thing, were probably the two most frightening movies I watched during the 1950s.
Thank you again for coming to chat and for starting multiple discussion threads based on what you saw in the post. I really appreciate your effort. Please take good care of yourself and my buddy Harley, dear friend BB. I'll meet up with you again next month around the 15th!
I know im too kate to comment but I just had to stop by Love all the fashion the year I was 8! Jackie Kennedy vibes! The ad with the slacks screamed Mary Tyler Moore! I was really wrapped up with family visitors last week. My sister went home on Thursday and I miss her! I hooe you and Mrs Shady gave a wonderful July 4th celebration!
ReplyDeleteThanks for making it over, YaYa! Yessum, I know you were tied-up with Midge. I trust she had a nice visit with you, and hope you can head over to see her again soon. Have a safe and happy holiday, dear friend YaYa!
DeleteBack from WW to listen to some old favorites. I do not remember Charlena. Once Upon A Time is one of my favorites of all times. Mother In Law was a joke type song similar to Alley Oop, Get A Job. Fun type songs. I remember most of the movies. Remember the Rialto? Jerre
ReplyDeleteHi, Jerre!
DeleteThanks for swinging by upon your return from the shore, good buddy. I had never heard "Charlena" either, but it's a killer, earns Shady Del Knight's coveted "Zeal of Approval" and it is my Pick-To-Click for this post. I have only faint memories of the Rialto, located at 121 W. Market Street. I read the following tidbits about it on cinematreasures.org: << Originally opened as the Hippodrome Theatre on September 1, 1913. In 1925, it went over to screening movies. By 1931 it had been renamed Rialto Theatre, and closed June 17, 1952, with Carl Esmond in “The Catman of Paris” & Robert Livingstone in “Valley of the Zombies”.>> Commenting on that site, John Simmers wrote: << The Rialto was one of the theaters Warners Bros. operated in York (along with the Strand, Capitol and the Ritz, and the Lion in Red Lion). The Ritz showed Westerns, I’ve been told, and the Rialto was what was called an “Action House,” specializing in low-budget detective, mystery and horror movies and whatnot. The Strand and capitol were the Warner’s prestige theaters. >>
Glad you liked the Dell oldies and the movie posters. I'll be back with my next post on July 15 and hope you can check it out. Have a nice holiday, good buddy Jerre!
