Vol. 18: Long Lost Dell Songs
of Fall 1960 and Winter 1960/61
BEWARE! NOTHING CAN
PREPARE YOU FOR...
JUKEBOX GIANTS
THAT TIME FORGOT!
Hello, friends! Dell Rat Tom
welcoming you to volume 18
of my exclusive 36-part
Shady's Place series
SAVED
BY THE
DELL
Today, you will travel
back to fall and the
holiday season of
1960
and the start of
1961
and find yourself
standing before
the Dell jukebox.
Those dimes
and quarters
you brought
along are
burning
a hole
in your
pocket...
so why not
feed them
to the record
machine and
play some
of the great
Dell songs
of late 1960
and early '61?
This series was made possible by Jim Sieling, my good friend
in York, and the husband of John Ettline's niece Nancy.
Jim Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
As you recall, Jim acquired the Dell's Seeburg jukebox (below)
and many of the records that played on it through the decades.
Keep in mind that the Dell had two jukeboxes - one in Helen's
snack bar up at the house, the other down in "The Barn" -
the dance hall John had built onto the barn and garage.
When Jim took possession of the Dell's record collection,
he discovered, to his dismay and ours, that many of
the discs had been improperly handled and stored.
Simply put - they were filthy.
Mice (Dell rats?) had made a home among the records, and at least
one snake (a Violet Hill viper?) had slithered in looking for a meal.
Jim undertook the mammoth job of cleaning, organizing and cataloging
the records, then sent me the finished alphabetical list. There are 6,065
records on Jim's list including Christmas records, 12,130 songs in all!
My series brings you the 180 best Dell jukebox songs from 1955
through 1963, a period long before I arrived on the scene.
This series is dedicated to
the memory of Nancy Sieling.
Nancy Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
Nancy, who was John Ettline's niece and Jim's wife, passed away in 2020.
Over the years, Nancy's generous contributions of pictures, information
and Shady Dell memorabilia greatly enhanced the quality of both of my
Dell-themed blogs. We have Nancy to thank for rescuing many of the
Dell's priceless platters when they were art risk of being thrown into
a trash dumpster and destroyed, hence the name of my series...
SAVED BY THE BELL DELL
Of course, we also have Jim to thank for tackling the enormous
task of cleaning, organizing and cataloging these 6,065 records!
Okay, it's time to use your imagination. Pretend that you are
at the Dell looking at the musical menu on the jukebox.
Scroll down and play the next 5 Dell songs.

Am I the early bird again? It feels like a waste for me this go 'round as I must confess that I did not actually read your post today. I just wanted to make sure I stopped by to wish you and the missus a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, since I know this will be your last post of the year.
ReplyDeleteI've actually been on my Christmas Break for four days now and have two more full weeks off. I was planning on taking the break completely off and finish up my grading on our teacher work days, but wouldn't you know they scheduled meetings and trainings for both?! So I'm actually trying to get through this last stack of grammar homework while I've got the house to myself for the morning. Wish me luck!
Hi, Ashton!
DeleteYessum, dear friend, you are the Early Bird again this month, and thank you for coming over to say hello as I present my final post of 2025 at Shady's Place!
Seems like you never stop working, Ashton. You are a devoted educator and a fine example for us all. Thank you for your service and dedication. I hope at some point you can set aside the paperwork, free yourself from responsibility, relax and have some holiday fun. I especially hope Alexis has a magical Christmas.
Thank you again for being such a great friend to me all these years and particularly for all your visits during 2025. They were very much appreciated. Happy holidays to you and your family, dear friend Ashton. Let us make a resolution to keep our friendship going and growing in 2026!
Good Morning Shady! This is Birgit and, just so you know, I have pneumonia, but I am on antibiotics and feel better today. I’m shaky and cough when I talk but no more lung pain. Now, I just love the fashions….i really love the fuschia dress with the pink gloves and the red dress….they are so elegant. Now, I see a bunch of women dressed in skin tight leggings and a sloppy top or pajamas wearing their slippers!
ReplyDeleteThe music was so nice and from a bygone era and I enjoyed all except not a fan of the last one. It is the style of the music the way it was created…anyhoo, I hope you are well and are enjoying the season. Harley, the big sausage is looking out the window and just gave a loud sigh to dad. Time to take him out!
Hi, Anonymous!
DeleteYou claim to be Birgit, but I need to see two forms of I.D. to confirm that. :)
Welcome welcome welcome. dear friend! It's my last post of the year and I am delighted that you could visit me early on day one.
All joking aside, I am troubled to learn that you have pneumonia and have been struggling with lung pain and a cough for the last few days. Please follow the doctor's orders and get well soon, dear friend!
I'm happy to know that you liked most of the songs and enjoyed the 1960-61 fashion show in Vol. 18 of Saved. As you pointed out, the styles on display in those vintage mags and catalogs range from dressy to casual. This series has now reached the halfway point with lots more to come.
Yessum, if my buddy Harley is looking out the window, chances are he needs to go out and piddle. When he comes back into the house, please show him the Calling All Girls wiener-dog. It could be love at first sight. :)
Birgit, my heart is heavy knowing you are ailing during the holidays. I will be thinking about you and wishing for a speedy recovery. Thank you again for taking time to visit me for my 2025 yearender. Stick around for lots more music and fun next year at Shady's Place!
Dear friend Shady,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to come to write you a special message. Firstly, I would like to wish you and Mrs. Shady a very Merry Christmas as well as a Happy New Year. I wish you both good health, happiness and peace...now and always, my cherished friend.
I would like to also take this opportunity to thank you so much for your posts, for your visits and kind comments on my blog posts, and most of all, for your friendship over the years. I really appreciate you and I look forward to seeing your next post and many more to come.
Hi, Linda!
DeleteI just found your message in my "awaiting moderation" bin and, because it it so lovely and thoughtful, I decided to copy and publish it here on my new post.
The feeling is mutual, dear Linda. Who'd have thought that we would find our way back to each other years after we parted ways? It's a blessing for which we can both be thankful this holiday season.
If you have time, I would be interested in your reaction to this post, my final one of the year. Thank you again for your friendship and very kind words. Have a wonderful Sunday and a happy holiday week ahead, dear friend Linda!
My dad had an Everly Brothers record when I was a kid. So I knew that song. I don't know many of the other songs but I know Elvis. My mom and grandma loved him. They had so many of his records.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun seeing all the ads from that time. They remind me of the ones I saw in the 70's.
I still love those Necco candies. I don't see too many ads for them these days. The only time I see them is in my grandson Trick or Treat bag now.
Have a very Merry Christmas.
Hi Mary & Falcor!
DeleteWelcome in, dear friend! I am pleased as punch to have you here as I present my last post of the year - Vol. 18 of Saved by the Dell - the halfway mark in my epic 36-part series spinning original records from the Shady Dell jukebox. Will any of us live long enough to see this series through to completion? Can't wait to find out. :)
"Lucille," a cover of the hit by Little Richard, is probably my favorite song by The Everly Brothers. It's just so cool, such a great rock & roll record in its own right, that I find it irresistible and never get tired of hearing it. Yessum, Elvis the Pelvis released two movies during this span of time - G.I. Blues co-starring Juliet Prowse, and Flaming Star co-starring Barbara Eden. I don't think I ever heard an Elvis Presley record played at the Shady Dell. Perhaps "In The Ghetto," but I am not entirely sure about that.
Yessum, I had forgotten all about Necco wafers. I used to pop several of them in my mouth at the same time. Thanks for letting me know they are still being manufactured.
Thank you very much for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and my buddy Falcor. See you next month when I unveil my first post of 2026!
I never do well on these "time forgot" songs (because if I ever knew them, I forgot!), but as always I enjoyed all the movie posters, advertisements, magazines, and dinosaurs. Would you believe I've never watched an Elvis movie?! I never listened much to his music, though I've grown to enjoy more in later life. I do believe he has the best version of Blue Christmas out there.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and Mrs. Shady a wonderful holiday season and all the best in the coming year!
Hi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteThanks for joining the fun as I bring you my last post of 2025, presenting another set of five long-lost records salvaged from the old Dell jukebox thanks to my good friends Jim & Nancy Sieling.
Yessum, this is yet another fresh set of "Dinah Shore" images. :) But alas, I don't have any more new ones to show you as we head into the second half of this series. From now on, all of the dino pics will be repeats. The good news is that this series has been running so long that you probably won't remember that you have seen them before. :)
I hear ya about Elvis movies. I can't say that I have ever been a fan of them. I think I might have watched Jailhouse Rock from start to finish simply because I admired his co-star Judy Tyler, having come to know her as Princess Summerfall Winterspring on The Howdy Doody Show. Judy and her husband were tragically killed in a car crash just days after production ended on Jailhouse Rock and before the picture was released. Elvis was reportedly so distraught that he refused to watch the film. I was much more fond of Elvis as a recording artist and at one point had most of his singles in my vinyl collection.
Kelly, I am so thankful to have you as a friend. Thank you for sticking with me through the past year. Happy holidays to you, Pat and the rest of your canine clan. I will see you a few weeks from now when I kick-off 2026 here at Shady's Place Music & Memories!
Hi dear Shady - Hope you and the Mrs. had a great Thanksgiving. I've been so lax in both posting on my own blog and even stopping by others. I don't comment if I miss your three day window.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing all these old photos and magazine covers. Really brings me back to my youth, when things were much less complicated, at least for me. Those red velvet dresses remind me of one that I had for Christmas one year. Mine was black with white fluffy trim. It was my skating outfit since I also got roller skates as a present. I wonder what the expose was about gum chewers. That's the first thing I do when I get behind the wheel of my car, put a stick of gum in my mouth. I did remember a few of the songs.
Hope that you are able to have a wonderful Christmas with your family. Thanks for sharing all these terrific treasures!
Hi, Janet & Benny!
DeleteI am very happy to see you, dear friend! Thank you for setting aside time to check-in and check-out my final post of the year, a salute to the dusty, musty records found in the old Shady Dell jukebox that were saved by friends of the Dell Jim & Nancy Sieling. That old jukebox was like a time capsule, and I am proud to play in this 36-part series 180 of the best songs found therein.
Don't worry about your absence, dear Janet. Our friendship is intact and our bond extends beyond blogging. Hey, before I forget, you should watch the new hit TV sitcom A Man On The Inside starring Ted Danson. The critically acclaimed series was filmed around the San Francisco area and includes shots of the GG Bridge. It reminded me of your A to Z sightseeing Challenge a few years ago. Wiki sez: "While filming on location in San Francisco and in the redwoods along the Russian River, the cast and crew were staying at the Fairmont hotel at the same time as U.S. President Joe Biden. Only the exterior shots were filmed on location in San Francisco, with the sole exception of an interior shot of the Piazza Pellegrini restaurant." The series is simply superb and I hope you will give it a try. Season 2 has already been released with Ted's real-life wife Mary Steenburgen in the main cast.
Glad you enjoyed the parade of late 1960 - early 1961 fashions in this installment. Thanks for sharing the anecdote. Yessum, ever since I quit smoking more than 33 years ago, I have been chewing gum regularly.
It's been quite a year, hasn't it, Janet? Nevertheless, there is reason for hope as we head into election year 2026. Shady's Place will be here to take your mind off the chaos, so stick around and join the fun whenever you can. Happy holidays to you, Bill and my buddy Benny, dear friend Janet!
OMG I just started watching Man on the Inside. I watched the first two episodes and then I had to stop or I would have stayed up all night! Thanks for thinking of me with that recommendation. See you next year.
DeleteI'm glad you discovered that outstanding show, dear Janet. It just keeps getting better and better, and Ted Danson is just amazing in it - so natural and "real" that you can't believe it is scripted acting. However, I must admit that I got the blues seeing Sally Struthers and immediately thinking about Rob Reiner. Such a Shakespearean tragedy!
DeleteHope you and Benny enjoy the holidays, dear friend Janet!
Happy first day of winter Shady! It has felt like winter all month and then this week it will hit almost 60 degrees by Christmas! I'm sorry to say I know no none of the songs, but I sure enjoyed the ads and the movie shout outs! I love to watch TCM to see the goodies like "Where The Boys Are" and "Swiss Family Robinson"...so good! Some of the fashions in the ads could be worn today! When I saw the young girls in their dresses, I thought about what that age of girls wear today. They look like they all work in Vegas and dress like they're in their 20's! Boy, now I sound like my grandma! Ha! Anyway, I hope you and Mrs. Shady are well. The flu has been going around here, and it's been rough for my work friends and some family too. I'll be finishing up my Christmas things tomorrow and getting ready for the family on Thursday. Have a very merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa & Annabelle!
DeleteI'm thrilled to see you, dear friend! Thanks for being here as I wind up the year 2025 with my final post, the 18th installment of my Saved series.
I'm glad you are appreciating the movie posters I've been including in greater abundance in recent posts. They combine with the ads and songs to help accurately establish the timeline of our lives. You always have an eye for the clothing styles of the period. Thanks for your observations about the fashion trends of the new 1960s decade revealed in this volume. Please show my sweetie Annabelle the sausage hound on the covers of Calling All Girls.
Yessum, winter is officially underway and I hope it doesn't pack too much of a punch in your neck of the woods. We've already had a 4 or 5 inch snowfall which pleased me, but the bitter cold is getting harder to tolerate as I grow older. We can dream all we want about a white Christmas, but it will not happen in our area either. Temps will be far too high. It is forecast to be cloudy and 50 degrees instead.
Thank you again for your kind visit and excellent comments, dear friend YaYa, and thank you for your continued friendship throughout the year 2025. I look forward to keeping you entertained and amused in 2026. I wish you and your large and wonderful family the happiest of holidays and I'll see you next month when I return to celebrate 2026: Year of the Dell Rat!
Happy holidays!! Don't believe I ever heard "And the Heavens Cried". The old posters and adds bring back a lot of good memories. Have a great next year. Jerre
ReplyDeleteHi, Jerre!
DeleteThanks for reporting in, good buddy! I'm happy to see your face in the place as I offer Part 18 of our Saved series. Gosh, there are only 18 more volumes left. For your planning purposes, the Part 36 finale will be posted in 2050. :)
"Heavens Cried" is new to me also, but it was inside the Dell jukebox and therefore must have received some play in late 1960 and early 1961. I like the song. Glad you dug the assortment of pictures and illustrations this time around. In that picture near the end of the post, the one that shows a teenage couple enjoying orange juice, I think the girl might be actress and model Carol Lynley who was making commercials and posing for print ads during that period.
Thanks again for coming to my Christmas party, the yearender post here at Shady's Place. I hope to see you next month when I kick-off 2026: Year of the Dell Rat! Happy holidays, good buddy Jerre, and thanks for your continued friendship and support through the years!
Hi dear friend Shady, wow, so many memories here. I loved The Swiss Family Robinson television show ❤️ 💙 I do love Elvis Presley's voice and music 🎶 🎵 but I didn't like the movies very much. I don't think he did either.
ReplyDeleteI would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and thank you for sharing these posts.
Hi, Linda!
DeleteThanks for checking out my last post of 2025, dear friend, featuring songs, print ads, magazine covers and movie posters from late 1960 and early 1961.
Mrs. Shady and I had dinner for 8 at our house yesterday. Weeks of housecleaning, shopping, gift wrapping, decorating and food preparation were required to prepare for the feast and we needed to run the dishwasher three times in a row last night to clean up afterward. I hope you had a Christmas filled with joy up there in Montreal. Let us make a vow to stick together as good friends throughout the year 2026.
See you a few weeks from now, dear friend Linda. Happy new year!
Jukeboxes are fun. I ran across one at an old diner in Nashville recently. They induce a bit of nostalgia. Wishing you a very happy 2026!
