"Mission Bell" - Donnie Brooks
(Aug./Sept. 1960, highest chart pos. #7 Hot 100/#13 Cash Box,
performance on Feb. 20, 1965, ep. of Hollywood A Go-Go)

Kicking-off the show, Dallas pop singer Donnie Brooks
performing "Mission Bell," his signature song and top 10 hit
from the summer of 1960. Donnie was flanked by the gyrating
Gazzarri Dancers in a 1965 appearance on Hollywood A Go-Go

Incidentally, the backing vocals on Donnie's disc were laid down by
The Blossoms, the LA-based girl group that included Darlene Love.
As session singers for Phil Spector productions, The Blossoms
sang background on many of the biggest hits of the 60s.

Before that, at the very top of the show, setting a dark mood and getting us
into the spirit of Halloween, Broken Peach, the sizzing Spanish sextet
that is attracting worldwide fame with sensational covers such as
that one, the heavy metal classic "Enter Sandman" by Metallica.

Hi again!  As you recall, I'm Loris Webb, an 80-year old granny
transformed overnight into a bloomin' college age hottie after
ingesting the fruit of a mysterious vine in my back yard.
The magic happens on the Australian sci-fi streamer
Bloom, hence the name of my SPMM series
Loris in Bloom
a radio show that features great songs from my original
youth way back in the 1950s and early 60s.

Welcome to another exciting edition of

 RETROSONIC  RADIO
 ROULETTE

a series featuring a random group of Shady Bunch celebrities
offering a mixed bag - jarring juxtapositions galore - a variety
of musical styles with something to suit practically any taste.
To introduce the next song, here's another A-list presenter,
the one and only Geraldo Rivera!

Hi, everyone!  I am excited to play Show & Tell with you again
as I present a sample from my exclusive Shady's Place series

 It's My Vault...
 and That's Vinyl!

Moments ago, I returned to the earth's surface completing
another round trip to my secret vault deep underground.

Brushing aside the cobwebs, I discovered some
long lost relics and brought them back up with me.
First, I recovered this vintage photo of the famous
Landers Sisters - Audrey and Judy.

In the 1970s, the Landers sibs rose to fame as models and actresses.
Between them, they appeared in dozens of TV series and films
throughout the 80s. The sisters also posed together in the
January, 1983, issue of Playboy magazine.

Next, I unearthed two dazzling Audrey Landers poses.

Picture published in the Greek magazine Fantazio

Beginning in the early 1980s, Audrey had the supporting role
of Afton Cooper in 86 episodes of the hit TV series Dallas
and the 1996 TV movie Dallas: J.R. Returns.

These images of Audrey remind us of the subtle, understated
sex appeal that was typical of female celebs of yesteryear.

And here's another pic I found buried in the vault, a head shot of Audrey.

Last but certainly not least, I found this ultra rare video of Audrey singing a song
released as a single from her 1990 album Love Me Tender. Here now is the
lovely and vivacious Audrey Landers with-- "Shadows Of Love!"

Hi everyone! I'm June Colburn, a wholesome, trusting girl from Indiana
who found herself in New York City desperately seeking a job.

I love the smell of bus fumes in the morning.

I was also desperately seeking Susan a roommate, that is until I met
Chloe, the B---- in Apartment 23, and agreed to move in with her.
SPOILER ALERT: This wasn't my key to happiness.

Long story short, Chloe's the roommate from hell, a very bad
influence, and we're the new Odd Couple as stars of the sitcom:

Tapped by Shady Del Knight to join the Shady Bunch deejay team,
Chloe and I host a show on SPMM Retro Radio called, quite rightly...

  Don't Trust Chloe...

 the B---- in Apt. 23.

On our radio show, bad girl Chloe plays sexy pop and hard rock,
while I play soft rock and easy listening hits like this one by Canadian
singer/songwriter Andy Kim.  Unlike Chloe and me, the guy and gal
in Andy's song are-- "So Good Together!"

Before long, we all become victims of a phantom slasher. How's that

On the 10th of September this year, the music world lost a great
singer and songwriter when Bobby Hart died at the age of 86.

Together with his partner Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart wrote some
of the biggest hits for The Monkees, including the theme from their
TV series The Monkees, "Last Train To Clarksville," "I'm Not
Your Steppin' Stone,""I Wanna Be Free," "She," "Words"
and the song I am about to play for you.

In remembering Bobby Hart on Instagram, Micky Dolenz, the last
surviving member of The Monkees, pointed out that Hart "not only
made a vital contribution to the popular success of the Monkees,
but even more importantly to the essence, the very spirit of the
entire venture. His talent, charisma, good humor and calmness
in the face of what at times was nothing less than a maniacal
roller coaster ride often brought a sense of peace that
heartened everyone around him. He was the
stillness that is the eye of the hurricane."

Now, please give a warm welcome (before he snaps

Twisty is a dis-member of The Shady Bunch deejay team and host of

 TWISTY  THE  NIGHT  AWA

Men Are from Mars.

Women Are from Venus.

Twisty's from Jupiter.

Freak Show is set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1952. For that reason, Twisty's
play list here on SPMM Retrosonic Radio contains favorites from the 50s
and early 60s. Twisty has earned the nickname "The Silent DJ" because
he doesn't speak. There are no intros to the songs he plays.

He simply stares, smiles, then goes ape and butchers you.
(Nothing personal... just killer clown business).

Everybody loathes a clown... so why don't you?

  1. It has been a very long time since I heard Mission Bell. I enjoyed that blast from the past. Of course I enjoyed the Stones, but I thought Brown Sugar was banned from their shows and not politically correct. I remember something about a black oak but not sure I understand it. As always the pin ups were great. Jerre

    1. Hi, Jerre!

You're the Early Bird this time around, good buddy. Thanks for hustling over on day one!

I suspected that you would enjoy Donnie Brooks doing "Mission Bell" on Hollywood A Go-Go. I was elated to discover that hybrid video which starts out with the 1965 show intro audio and then crossfades to the original studio sound in remastered glory, a wonderful combination!

I asked the AI about "Brown Sugar." Frankly, I spent all these years not knowing the lyrics and it was shocking to read them today for the first time. The AI gives this explanation: "The Rolling Stones' song "Brown Sugar" sparked decades of controversy and was eventually dropped from their concert setlist in 2021 due to its lyrics depicting slavery, sexual exploitation, and misogyny. The controversy gained renewed traction with the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, leading the band to stop performing it live after their 2019 tour." The AI goes on to say that Keith Richards rejects the criticism and sees the song as << a portrayal of the "horrors of slavery" rather than a glorification. >> You might recall my blog discussions of one of the Stones' earlier hits "Paint It, Black," and how the phantom comma placed in that position the title on the original record label created an uproar and cries of racism. At the time, Richards again went on the defensive, stating that it was the decision of Decca Records to insert the comma, not the band's choice.

Glad you enjoyed the pics of Loris Webb, Audrey Landers, Carmen Lopez, June Colburn, Alison Brie and other beauties featured in the post. The women of Broken Peach always knock me out and, believe it or not, I find Twisty the Clown very attractive. :)

Thanks again for supporting Shadyween 2025, good buddy Jerre. Have a happy Halloween!

  2. Hi my friend Shady. What a mix of music and photos you have today! One minute I'm looking at some pretty girls and the next I'm seeing some pretty ugly monster clowns. I haven't heard Donny Brooks before but he sounds like he belongs with the group of Frankie Avalon and the like. I remember seeing Audrey Landers, and also sister Judy, on lots of TV shows.

The Heart cover "Alone" was really good. Interestingly we just saw Heart earlier this year. Sad that Ann Wilson is confined to a chair to do her singing now. She still had the voice but sometimes I think it's better for these folks to retire than to keep going once their health issues become so great.

I have never seen the Stones in person, probably never will with the price they want for tickets. Can't get over how much Mick struts around. No wonder he's so thin.

Thanks again for stopping by my place. As you can see I didn't quite make the challenge of blogging every day but did enough to get my hand back in. Happy Halloween to you and Mrs. Shady. Going to dress up?

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm excited to see you here in Shady's clubhouse experiencing Pt. 2 of my 2025 Shadyween Spooktacular. Thanks for coming early and for bringing my buddy Benny along with you!

Yessum, you are a little too young to remember Rockabilly Hall of Famer Donnie Brooks and his 1960 top 10 hit "Mission Bell." Donnie released half a dozen singles before "Mission Bell" using two other stage names: Johnny Faire and Dick Bush. His only other substantial hit was "Doll House," the follow-up to "Mission Bell," released five months later in the fall of 1960. "Doll House" brushed the top 30.

I'm glad you remember the Landers sisters, a buzzworthy set of sibs that posed for Playboy and, as you mentioned, appeared on many TV shows of the period.

Isn't that a sensational rendition of "Alone" by Ann Marie Nacchio? She blew me away with those powerful pipes. Thanks for singling her out. Man, I'm sad to learn that Ann Wilson needs to perform from a chair nowadays. Gosh, it reminds us that Father Time waits for no man or woman. Yessum, Mick Jagger's on-stage strutting, prancing and agile dancing were was a major part of the band's appeal. I can't imagine Mick ever performing a rowdy song like "Brown Sugar" while sitting down, can you?

I always enjoy your posts and completely understand when you fall a bit short of your ambitious commitment on those grueling Challenges. I'm happy for your sake that you feel a weight lifted from your shoulders and new found freedom to get out and about and enjoy life to a greater extent.

Thanks again for coming and happy Halloween to you and your family, dear friend Janet!

  3. Happy October and almost Halloween! Are you giving out candy to the Trick or Treaters? I would if we ever got any kids knocking on our door but we don't.

You know, I've never been to a concert of any kind. Too many people for this introvert. 🤣

    I remember the Landers sisters.

Supergirl was such a good show. I like the Rolling Stones. They sure have been around for a long time.

The Monkeys! I loved their show. I used to watch it all the time when I was younger.

I hope you have a nice Halloween. Until next time.

Enter Sandman is one of my all time favorite songs from Metallica. The cover wasn't bad at all.

Did I ever tell you that my mom, brother and his wife were on an episode of The Geraldo Rivera Show? I think it was 1988 or 1989. My brother was 16 years old and he married a 55 year old woman. My mom had to sign the papers so they could get married. Everytime I see Geraldo now, that's what I think of. 🤣🤣🤣

    1. Hi, Mary & Falcor!

Thanks a bunch for coming on day one, dear friend, as I present the conclusion of this year's Shadyween Frightfest!

No, Mary, Mrs. Shady and I live in a gated 55+ community. We have been here for two Halloweens now and there were no trick-or-treaters in sight either year. It surprises me that kids don't come around your block. Maybe it is simply too risky for them to be out after dark, even if they are accompanied by chaperones. Cheer up. Maybe that weird guy will come to your door and you can give him some candy to bury in the ground with all the rest of his mysterious valuables. :)

Hey, I like what you're saying, Mary. I'd much rather listen to an artist's recordings on a good stereo system in the comfort of my man cave or watch them perform on TV than get packed in like a sardine at a noisy concert venue. It's nice to meet a fellow introvert.

Cool that you watched Supergirl and thus know who Nia Nal is. Ditto that you watched The Monkees TV show. At the Shady Dell, owner Helen Ettline used to put The Monkees on the old black & white TV set in the snack bar. I enjoyed watching it while eating one of her subs, French fries and a cherry coke.

I'm thrilled that you give a thumbs up to Broken Peach, the Spanish band fronted by three young women that's attracting global attention with their excellent covers of pop, classic rock and metal anthems of yesteryear. Their Metallica cover, released two weeks ago, has picked up 31,000 likes on YouTube and is my Pick To Click for the entire post.

No, you never told me that story about your family's "Brush With Greatness," the time they appeared as guests on Geraldo. That certainly is a wide age gap, but you can't help who you fall in love with. The heart wants what the heart wants.

Thanks for sharing that tidbit and for all of your interesting remarks, dear friend Mary. Have a happy Halloween and I'll see you next month!

  4. Hi dear friend Shady, I came by to tell you that there is going to be another bus strike here in Montreal...the 3rd one since June, and this one will be the longest...a month, from November 1st to November 28th. I am trying to get as much as I can done with shopping, doctor's appointments and making sure I have what I need, and I have just two days left before the strike.
All this to let you know that I will be late in reading your post. I want to give it my undivided attention and be able to enjoy and absorb it.
I will be back on Saturday to do this, but I just wanted to let you know that I didn't forget and that I am well, just all this stuff going on.

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Thanks for coming to the platter party, dear friend!

It matters not how much of my content goes over your head. What does matter is that you were exposed to a few new songs that you might like or learned about TV series that might be of interest.

Yessum, it is a mystery about "Valleri," one of The Monkees' greatest hits. You will need to think back to where you were and what you were doing in the late winter and early spring of 1968. If I am not mistaken, you were only a small child at the time or perhaps not even born. That might explain how the chart-topper went undetected on your radar. Glad you got a chuckle over Geraldo Rivera and his underground vault. I imagine his eyes popped when he found those pics of the Landers sisters way down there. :) I'm pleased that you took notice of the GIF roulette wheel that spins in all five volumes of my Retrosonic Radio Roulette series.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Kelly. Please give my buddy Pat a ghost shaped treat and have a safe and happy Halloween!

Glad you remember the photogenic Landers sisters. and loved Chubby Checker. In my younger years, I owned a copy of the 45 rpm record in this post, "Let's Do The Freddie." As was often the case, it was the B side of Chubby's single, "(At the) Discotheque," that was the side played more often in the Northern Soul nightclubs of England.
