"Beach Boy Gold" - Gidea Park
(July 23, 1981 perf. on Top Of The Pops)

Kicking-off our star-studded anniversary special with

"Good Good Good Vibrations" and their hit Beach Boys medley,
that was Gidea Park, the creation of English singer/songwriter
and record producer Adrian Baker. That clip showed the group
in the summer of 1981 performing live on Top of The Pops.

Hi, everyone!  To borrow from the hit song by The Beach Boys and
The Regents before them, my name is Mar-Mar-Mar Mar-Marvel Ann.

I'm one of the stars of the slasher comedy flick Psycho Beach Party (2000)

and one of the memorable characters in the Shady's Place series

  A.A. MEETING

...a tribute to the beautiful and talented actress Amy Adams.

Set in 1962, Psycho Beach Party is a spoof of 1960s Beach Party
and Gidget movies along with the slasher genre of horror films.

The story follows Florence "Chicklet" Forrest, a Gidget-like character...

as she flirts and surfs in a small beach town. Cowabunga!

When Chicklet starts experiencing blackouts, severed body parts start
turning up on the beach.  EEW!!!  Could the incidents be connected?
Ya think???  SPOILER ALERT: This is not a boat accident!

 The plot might surround Florence...

 but the boys surround me...

because this beach bunny's got what it takes and knows how to use it.

They call Florence "Chicklet." Well, I kinda look like "Cricket" -
Cricket Blake - the character played by Connie Stevens
on the TV series 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye.

I also have a Marcia Brady thing going on.  Oops - wardrobe malfunction!
Marcia!  Marcia!  Marcia!

So, here I am, pretty in pink, beachy keen and the center of attention.
I always bring my two plain Jane girlfriends along to
make sure guys look at me and only me.

I've got radar for buff beach boys.

Incoming, girls!

Studly surfer at 12 o'clock!

Oops - another wardrobe malfunction, and I didn't even get in the water yet!

My top will probably come off in the waves, too.
Would you please join me in case I need help again?

Now that I've teased you about Psycho Beach Party, it's time to get back to
the music. Here he is, our master of ceremonies, a legend in his own mind -
Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery (and Music History)!

Cheers, Marvel Ann, and ta muchly for giving us a sneak peek
at your shagadelic movie Psycho Beach Potty. If I told you
you've got a classy chassis... would you hold it against me?
Fancy a bit of how’s your father? The old slap and tickle?
What say you and I get starkers and make some motion
in the ocean taking the skin boat to tuna town?

That's a gag, dove! Oh come on now. I saw you
crack a smile just then. Admit it, baby -- YEAH!

Austin Powers
I was just pulling your leg, pussycat - taking a piss and all that rot.

Hello! I'm Donna the Prima Donna, one of
Shady's Angels

Shady's Angels don't battle bad guys.  We play
the greatest songs of the 1950s and early 60s.

If you're a doo-wop fan, the Angel song I am about to play will bowl you over.

Recorded by The Belmonts, this ditty was a top 30 hit at the end
of summer in 1962. A year later, Dion took the melody, changed the
lyrics and turned it into my theme song "Donna The Prima Donna."
Here now are the Belmonts singing-- "Come On Little Angel!"

Hey Vern -- how's it hangin'? This is your old buddy
Ernest P. Worrell comin' around again like a bad penny.

Taint none of my beeswax, Vern... but you look a little rough
around the edges, like somethin' the Hepcat dragged in.

What happened, Vern? 'Fess up. Out all night and runnin' wild?
Get grabby with one of the gals down at the Peek-a-Boo

his tin ear. Well I'll be ding if it ain't that purty little English muffin
Amy Slattery along with her pappy. They're here to remind us of
another great duo, The Everly Brothers, as they cover a spiffer

on the B side of The Everlys' low charting 1964

The song I am contributing to Shady's 17th anniversary extravaganza
is indeed a great one, and so is the performance you are about to see.

It's by the Icelandic singer-songwriter and musician known as Laufey.
Influenced by jazz greats Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Laufey
rose to international fame and widespread critical acclaim in the
early 2020s and is credited with bringing back jazz to Gen Z.
Upon its release in 2023, the original song Laufey is about
to perform reached 1 million streams in less than 24 hours.
The bossa nova/jazz pop song was released as a single
from Laufey's second studio album Bewitched which
broke the all-time record on Spotify as the biggest
debut for a jazz album in the platform's history.

The gimmick is that every song we play has the word "You" in the title.

The "You" song I'm  about to play is by Bonnie Pointer, former member
of the famous Pointer Sisters. After leaving the sister group in 1977,
Bonnie had moderate success as a solo artist, this being her biggest hit.

Penned by the Motown's Holland-Dozier-Holland writing
and composing team, the song was originally recorded by
The Elgins who scored a top 10 R&B hit with it in late 1966.

  1. 17 years is amazing! Congratulations to you!

I love the Beach Boys and goodness they did a great job.

I grew up in California and I miss the beach. I don't miss all the people at the beach but I miss going to the beach.

I hadn't heard that Kim Wilde song before which surprises me since I like her.

I watched the first season of You and just couldn't get into it but my son in law keeps telling me that I should give it another try that it got better. So maybe I will.

Congratulations again to 17 years. Hopefully you will have many more years to come.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thanks for being the July 20 Early Bird, dear friend, the first to arrive and help me celebrate 17 years of blogging. Yessum, 17 years is a long period of time, and yet it seems like only yesterday when I held my breath and clicked to publish my first post July 20, 2008. I see that you have been blogging since 2005, which is an even greater accomplishment. Congratulations on your blogging longevity!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the UK-based Beach Boys tribute act Gidea Park and their medley of famous BB surf rock hits. Thanks for singling out Kim Wilde and her performance of the question song "Who Do You Think You Are?" Throughout my younger years, I failed to pay much attention to the English pop star. In recent years, once I started listening to her vast array of hits, I started going Wilde for Kim and have been a huge fan ever since.

A couple of months ago, I finished watching the final season of You. Every season was enjoyable, the plot twists and turns endless, but my favorite remains season 1 when Joe hooked up with Guinevere Beck. Jenna Ortega first caught my attention in a season of You, and Victoria Pedretti, the actress who played Love Quinn, was excellent starring in the supernatural horror drama miniseries The Haunting of Bly Manor, another show I recently completed.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary. Getting to know you has been one of the biggest highlights of my 17 years of blogging. Take care of yourself and my buddy Falcor and I hope to see you again when I return with my next post in the middle of next month!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thank you very much for finishing 2nd place in the race and for your kind words. I am not joking when I tell you that I have enough material to last another 17 years. I shudder to think that I will be in my 90s by that time!!! Stick around and find out if I can make it to that milestone (and beyond).

Thank you for your continued friendship and support, dear friend Kelly. I wish you and my buddy Pat another Pleasant Valley Sunday and a great week ahead. See you next month!

  3. Happy blogversary Shady! I hit that number in February and I'm really glad I found your blog and have enjoyed learning more about music and about the Shady Dell! You've been a wonderful blog buddy and always leave such nice comments. After all these years I think you could fit right in with our family reunions as you know all about my family! I enjoyed the different bands or soloist featured here over years. I hope you and Mrs. Shady are doing well in the heat of this summer....sort of Florida like! I just returned home yesterday from our East coast girl's trip. Now on to finish my trip saga but sure wanted to stop here first and give a big Yahoo to you for all your blog years! Hugs from Ohio and on to many more blogging fun!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm thrilled to see you, dear friend! Thanks for letting me know you have safely returned from your New England sightseeing trip. Annabelle must have danced a jig when you walked through the door. Tired as you must be, I am grateful that you set aside time to attend my anniversary party today.

Thank you for the very kind words about the value we both discovered in following each other, beginning in 2013, as I recall. I wouldn't have wanted to miss witnessing the evolution of your wonderful family - grandkiddos growing into adults and the painful loss of beloved family members and dogs like my buddy Eddy. Yessum, in many ways your family has become my family thanks to my ongoing visits to The Pines and your wonderful posts. Thank you for your support and encouragement over the years!

Thanks again for your visit and sweet comments, dear friend YaYa. Rest up now and have a great week ahead. I'll be back with the first post of my 18th year around the middle of next month. See you then!

  4. Dear Shady! Happy 17 years, my cherished friend! I hope you have many more! I appreciate your kind comment on my blog post yesterday and thanks so much for telling me about the experience with my blog on your blog feeder. I have asked a friend who is very technically inclined, and she has given me some tips on what I can do to remedy this, such as put more keywords in my post titles, etc., and Google will pick it up. I do know that my new blog posts appear in the Blogger news feed as well as on other fellow Blogspot users who subscribe to me, because some of them have their list of bloggers they follow on their blog, which is visible to everyone, and I see my new post does show at the top of their blog. I will do my best to fix this, though, and had you not told me I wouldn't have known, so thank you so much!

What a joy it is to have you drop by and wish me a happy anniversary, dear friend! Thank you very much for coming over early and for the vote of confidence as I proceed into year 18 of my blogging journey.

Yessum, it is a mystery why my apparatus cannot detect your blog feed as it does for all the other blogs I follow. Thanks for looking into it on your end. I hope we can get the mystery solved so that I will immediately notice when you publish.

  5. Having wished you a Happy Anniversary for your 17 years of blogging and having addressed the issue you told me about, now let's comment on your post here! :)
I love all the photos and illustrations, and the animations are a hoot, Shady! The music, the memories, and admittedly some are either forgotten or unknown to me, so much to explore! I will definitely be revisiting as always, to explore further!
I also love your red and white polka dot background! It brings me back to the 50's and 60's and reminds me of the saddle shoes I used to wear as a child!
Once again, my dear friend, Congratulations on your 17 years!!! I wish you many more, and I look forward to your posts, as I always have!
Sorry for the delay in my response, but we had 3 days of intense heat and humidity here in Montreal last week, Tuesday through Thursday, 40 Celsius or 104 Fahrenheit where I didn't go out for my own safety.
And if that wasn't bad enough, a doctor came on our local news on Wednesday to warn us that our air quality was one of the worst in the world! This was due to the wildfires we have been having! So I have been feeling very tired, dear friend.
You are a shining light in the blog world, and your posts and friendship over the years have been a source of inspiration and I want you to know how much I appreciate you!

    1. I'm excited to know that you enjoyed the pics, illustrations and gif clips in this mega post, Linda. Yessum, I understand why you and other friends might need to return another time or two in order to absorb all the material contained herein.

I have another blog, a private one, where I do all my experimenting with layouts, fonts, colors, etc. Late last year as I was making plans to radically change the look of Shady's Place, I found that bright red and white polka dot pattern in a Google search and liked it, figuring it would go well with the chocolate brown and convey a vintage mid 20th century vibe. Once I was fully satisfied with the layout, I copied it on this blog and went live with my new look at the stroke of midnight this past New Year's Eve. It was an exciting moment.

Yessum, the summer heat and humidity are relentless. I am looking forward to mid-August when temps in my neck of the woods will start to cool down in the evening, followed soon after by lower daytime highs. I am truly sorry that you are being forced to breath the smoke from those Canadian wildfires. We have been very lucky so far. I can't remember a single day this year when smoke drifted to our area from up your way as it did for weeks in 2023. However, we did have a two-day period a few weeks ago when the air quality was poor due to fires in New Jersey. Stay indoors as much as possible until these dual heath threats subside, my friend.

Linda, I can say the same about you. The world could use more people like you. You always spread cheer and positive energy, and I appreciate you for it. How fortuitous that our paths crossed in the blogosphere again this year after so many years apart. It is something for which we can both be truly thankful.

Thank you again for taking your first sweep of my anniversary post. If time permits, come back and watch the Laufey video. She is a wonderful discovery, her style reminiscent of 1940s and 50s jazz singers.

Stay safe and well, dear friend Linda, and look for my first post of year 18 coming your way around August 14!
