"Tom Sawyer" - Rush bass cover by Ellen Alaverdyan
(Aug. 2021)

Kicking off the show, that was 9 year old Ellen Alaverdyan,
the bass playing child prodigy from Las Vegas, Nevada,
doing a killer bass cover of "Tom Sawyer," the 1981
hit by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush.

Hi, I'm Chris Griffin,
and I bring you ROCK!
Welcome to a sneak preview
of my S-P-M-M radio show
PSYCHOTIC
BREAK!
As you recall, I'm the crazy
mixed-up kid from Family Guy.
Today I'm back playing host
and DJ... preparing for my
full-time gig as a member
of The Shady Bunch.

Ellen Alaverdyan's story reads like the script of a Disney movie.
She didn't even start learning how to play bass until 2020. In no time,
Ellen developed extraordinary playing skill and became a sensation
on her YouTube  channel performing bass covers of classic rock hits,
original songs, bass tutorials and duets with her musician/mentor
dad and doing jam collaborations with other musicians.

 In today's show, I'm bringing
you a few of Ellen's greatest
performances. I guarantee
this gifted, bubbly and
charming girl will
rock your world!

Now here's Ellen jamming
with Jerrod J-rod Sullivan,
an Atlanta area drummer
who started his career
as a percussionist at
the age of two!

"Bass & Drums Jam" -
Ellen Alaverdyan & Jerrod J-rod Sullivan
(Oct. 2021)

A few months ago, Ellen
enrolled for music lessons at
the Las Vegas West location
of the famed School of Rock
and started practicing with a
band of young musicians.
Watch and listen as Ellen
and her band perform a
cover of "The Ocean,"
a song from the 1973
Led Zeppelin album
Houses of the Holy.

If you're just tuning in...
I'm Chris Griffin, the crazy
mixed-up kid on Family Guy,
currently honing my skills
as a Shady Bunch DJ and
giving you a sneak peek at
my new radio show coming
soon to S-P-M-M... the
station that ROCKS!
We're taking a
PSYCHOTIC
BREAK!
from boring elevator music
and listening to the little lady
with big talent playing bass,
9 year old Ellen Alaverdyan
of Lost Wages, Nevada.

Next, Ellen and her father
Hovak Alaverdyan perform a
dad-daughter duet, playing
their first original tune...
an instrumental entitled-
"Don't Stop The Music."

(Father & Daughter Duet - Dec. 2021)

In addition to attending the
School of Rock, Ellen takes
interactive music lessons
from Yousician, a Finnish
online guitar training
academy. One of the
Yousician producers,
Markus, was so impressed
with Ellen's playing ability
that he wrote a song specially
for her, resulting in the cool
music video you are about to
watch. Here are Ellen on bass,
Markus on drums, percussion,
sax, keyboards and vocals and
Vellu on guitars, entertaining
us with-- "Ellen's Groove!"

  1. Good job, Shady! You managed to take two things of which I'm not particularly fond (random covers and precocious children) and make them appealing! Ellen seems to be very talented. Tom Sawyer is my favorite Rush song and she did a great job with the bass line. -Kelly (and Pat)

    1. Hi, Anonymous Kelly & Pat! :)

You guys are the co-Early Birds this time, and I thank you for hustling over to check out The Ellen Show!

I know that you are a tough but fair critic when it comes to covers, and I'm delighted that young Ellen passed the test adding wicked licks to the original track on her bass cover of the Rush biggie "Tom Sawyer."

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly! Pat Pat and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    2. P.S. Pat says he would like to bark at that dog in the first photo of Ellen. It's a beauty!

    3. Hi again, Kelly!

Yessum, Ellen's dog is a beauty. He or she sometimes appears in Ellen's videos milling around the studio in the background while she's playing. Thanks for letting me know that Pat fancies Ellen's pooch.

Have a wonderful weekend, dear friend Kelly!

  2. That's so cool that Ellen Alaverdyan is so young and yet so talented. She's in my city of Las Vegas, NV too. That's very cool. Looks like her whole family gets into it and loves music too.

    1. Hi, Mary!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to attend The Ellen Show starring the talented 9 year old bassist Ellen Alaverdyan. Yessum, I was hoping you'd notice that the young rocker is practically your neighbor right there in Vegas. I was wondering if you already knew about her. She's one to watch, that's for sure. Chris Griffin has a nose for talent, and he didn't let us down by introducing Ellen. Yessum, her dad is also gifted. Several videos on her channel have him patiently teaching her new songs and techniques.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Mary. I wish you and my buddy Falcor a safe and happy weekend!

  3. Oh, God, I'm in love! She's fantastic! If she's that good now, at 9, imagine how good she'll be at 15 or 18, if she keeps up the good work (and there's no doubt in my mind she will). I hope any boys looking to start a band will give her a chance, because she's dynamite!

    1. Hi, John!

I'm delighted that you dropped by, good buddy, and even more so now that you've told me bass bombshell Ellen Alaverdyan, the little girl with big talent, knocked your sox. I can't take credit for discovering her. We have roving Shady's Place talent scout Chris Griffin to thank for that.

I certainly agree that Ellen seems well on her way to becoming a rock star. If you watch the tutorials on her channel, you will notice that her dad is a patient mentor who really knows his stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing Ellen in an all-girl rock band someday. Props to those School of Rock kids for doing such a great job on that Led Zeppelin cover. The lead singer seemed to be channeling Robert Plant. I was totally impressed with her and everyone else in the band.

Thanks again for reporting in, good buddy John, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  4. Very talented young women, but I wonder, do you think that when she hits her teens she might rebel against her parents and start playing Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby covers instead? You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

Another question you don't have to answer if you don't want to (though I would prefer you do.) Ever think of giving Baby Stewie his own show? Or do you think he's overexposed at this point?

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for being a day one dilly, good buddy!

I'm pleased to have you here in the audience as I present my version of The Ellen Show. Sorry, good buddy - you won't find a surprise gift package under your seat, and this Ellen will not be calling you up on stage and handing you the keys to a new car.

I'm glad you appreciated tis intro to bass prodigy Ellen Alaverdyan. I sincerely hope she stays plugged into rock in the coming years because she has the talent, the right look, body language and moves and the personality, showmanship and charisma to become a rock star. As Ellen develops into a teenager, I hope she stays away from Sinatra and Crosby because they are proven gateways to Broadway musical showtunes.

Over the years, I have considered giving Stewie his own show on SPMM radio, but he never ages beyond one year, and I'm afraid of violating child labor laws. Actually, I pubbed at least two posts featuring Stewie and Brian on my old blog. Here are the links if you care to check them out:

I also had one or more post featuring classic exchanges between Lois and Peter:

Thanks again for tuning in The Ellen Show, good buddy Kirk. Enjoy your Sunday and have a great week ahead!

  5. I just loved Ellen, she is so talented and playing the bass, like Paul McCartney, whom I love. Good for her for working so hard to become a fantastic guitarist. My favorite two songs were "Ellen's Groove," and "Don't Stop the Music." However, I guess it was the first song that impressed me the most. Wow, just wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing Ellen's talent with us. I have heard quite a few people sing covers of famous songs and sometimes I like the cover more than the original. Have a lovely day, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Belle!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! Thank you so much for coming down to meet Chris Griffin's latest talent discovery, bass playing prodigy Ellen Alaverdyan of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Yessum, I'm so glad you appreciate little Ellen's talent as a bassist, the same instrument played by one of the most talented songwriters and musicians on earth, Beatle Paul. Above and beyond Ellen's talent, I am impressed with her personality, attitude and enthusiasm. She seems like such a nice girl, so pleasant and charming. Her bright, cheery smile alone will take her far, don't you think?

If you have time, I urge you to watch this video found on Ellen's YouTube channel entitled "Ellen's Story," particularly from the 3:15 point where it shows footage of Ellen as a baby and her daddy playing the guitar to entertain her and cultivate an interest in music. The excitement and curiosity written on little Ellen's face at that tender age is priceless and will melt your heart: The video also makes a very important point and sends a valuable message to all those parents who are too quick to say "no" to a curious child, or grab their hand and pull it away when the child reaches out and touches something new in an effort to learn about it. Ellen's father did just the opposite. He encouraged Ellen to touch and handle guitars and other valuable musical instruments and satisfy her curiosity. The result of his fatherly guidance, patience and wisdom is a child that is growing into a brilliant musician. So, please, if you have time, watch this video at least from the 3:15 mark:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lso2Z4f6C2s

Thank you again for coming by and letting me know that you enjoyed the show. I hope all is well with you up there in Western Canada and that you won't be experiencing extreme heat and wildfires again this year. I'm thinking about you, dear Belle, and thank you again for your kind visit and comment. Have a wonderful week!

    2. Hi Shady, I watched the video and just loved it. It was so much fun to see her surprise at that band writing a song just for her. The opening song on the video was great too! And what a beautiful baby and toddler she was. I love children of every age. They are pure, almost magical. I'm very happy for her for the loving family she has. All is well with me and my family. Sandy and Christine have come to town to visit for a week. Cherish came from Vancouver too. We were all laughing so hard last night, catching up on news and hearing a long, complicated story from Hope and Faith about losing the car keys and then hearing a woman scream and then a baby cry. I guess someone in our apartment complex was having a home birth. They were so excited and also blaming each other for losing the keys. Lol. It felt like Christmas day, which we missed because of Covid last year. Today totally made up for that.

    3. Hi, Belle!

Thanks for returning to let me know that you watched "Ellen's Story." It touched my heart. I keep thinking that we all start out as innocent babies. Some of us grow into people who enjoy creating art and spreading joy. Others grow into people who write hate manifestos and spread terror. Surely the path each of us chooses is influenced by the kind of parenting we receive from the very beginning when we are impressionable. To his credit, Ellen's father made sure she was exposed to the joy of music and was allowed hands-on experiences that cultivated her interest in playing an instrument. Those earliest impressions left an indelible mark on her. I could just feel her little brain soaking it up. A great, wise, patient parent can make all the difference in someone's life, and Ellen's story is proof.

Thanks for letting me know that you had your daughters and grandchildren with you and that they shared stories that made you all laugh. Faced with the horrors unfolding daily in the news, we need to keep family close and we need to laugh now more than ever. Every day should feel like Christmas Day, but more and more feel like Doomsday.

Thank you again for taking a little extra time to view that wonderful video of Ellen discovering the wonder of music as a baby and tiny toddler. I hope your week continues to bring you happiness. Your cheery words are greatly appreciated, dear friend Belle. I hope to connect with you again soon. You might like the art images I display in my next post which starts on Friday. Until then, take care and keep the faith.

  6. Wow and double Wow! So much talent in that little girls hands! She's amazing and only 9. I know at 9 I could barely play the radio much less an instrument. I can see it's a familial thing with Dad's talent too. All the songs were amazing. I can't imagine what she'll be doing as she gets older. Good luck to her and I'm sure we'll be hearing more from her in the future. I'm surprised she hasn't been on the Ellen G show as that Ellen does like to feature child prodigies. I'm not a big fan of old Ellen but this little gal is a winner. Thanks for featuring her here. I wish you a wonderful week Shady and I hope all is well with you and Mrs.Shady! Take care!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for popping in for The Ellen Show, dear friend!

Yessum, bass whiz Ellen Alaverdyan is amazing. You stated that, at age 9, you could barely play the radio. That's nothing. At age 9, I was still learning how to wave bye-bye. I tried playing drums, but it didn't go over well with my music instructor, my parents or our neighbors. Yessum, Hovak, Ellen's daddy, is also a gifted guitarist. More importantly, he is a great mentor and a wise parent. I want to share the same link with you that I gave to friend Belle (above). If you can spare a couple of extra minutes, please click at the 3:15 mark of this video and observe a star in the making, Ellen as a baby and toddler discovering the joy of music:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lso2Z4f6C2s

Yessum, Ellen A. is exactly the kind of talented young person often introduced by Ellen D. on her show.

Thank you again for swinging over for a visit, dear friend YaYa. I'm continuing to think about Midge and about you and the rest of your family, and hoping the news is all good on your side of the screen. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for taking a look and a listen as Shady's Place talent scout Chris Griffin introduces rising star bassist Ellen Alaverdyan.

Yessum, you touched on something I'd like to keep emphasizing. As Ellen plays, she is clearly filled with joy, and that puts joy inside of everyone who watches her perform. I hope she keeps that winning smile and positive attitude all her life, because they alone will enable her to make a favorable impression on an audience even before she starts to play. With her daddy as a mentor and guide, I have faith that Ellen will remain the sweet, cheerful person she is today.

I will continue to follow Ellen's YouTube channel and bring you more of her videos as time foes by. I hope I live long enough to see her take the stage as a major star someday.

Thanks again for being here this week, dear friend Janet. Please take my buddy Benny out for a walk. I see him dancing at the door. :) Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming down to see me at Shady's Place, dear friend!

You're right, dearie - that bass is as long as Ellen is tall, but the musical prodigy from Lost Wages handles it seemingly with ease. I've been sharing the following link with others and hope you can take a little extra time to watch some of this video "Ellen's Story." If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, click at the 3:15 mark and watch the segment showing Ellen as a baby and as a toddler being exposed to the magic of music by her musician father. It will warm your heart, BB:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lso2Z4f6C2s

Yessum, I get misty-eyed whenever I see a young person embracing classic rock from the Boomer years. Somehow it gives me hope. I am thrilled that Chris Griffin brought this talented girl to my attention..

Thanks again for dropping in for a visit and for your splendid comments, dear friend BB. Enjoy the rest of your day and I'll see you at the "BBC" later in the week!

  9. Tom,

I thought I'd swing by to see if you replied to my comment that I left earlier but I don't see it. This week has been a bit wonky. I can't recall precisely what I said but I was very impressed with Ellen. I enjoyed very much the daddy and daughter guitar original. It has that funky 70s vibe. All they need now is the lyrics and I think they'd have a winner on their hands. :) Thanks for the introduction. You may want to check your spam folder to see if my earlier comment is there. If not, then I may have to blame it on the craziness going on with our Internet lately. Have a good weekend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thank you very much for dropping in to meet little Ellen Alaverdyan, the amazing young bass player residing in Las Vegas, Nevada!

I'm sorry your original comment disappeared. I never saw it, and just now checked my "spam" and "awaiting moderation" folders. It's not in either of those places either. The blogging gremlins must have gobbled it up. I'm glad you returned and didn't miss seeing and hearing this delightful young bass player.

I want to share with you the link to the "Ellen's Story" video on her Y/T channel. If you click at the 3:15 mark and watch it for a minute or so, you will see Ellen as a baby getting her first exposure to the joys of musicmaking. She might remind you of your LA.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the tuneage of both daddy and daughter, and thank you again for visiting. I'll be starting a new post tomorrow morning and hope you can swing by again during its 6 day run. Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy!
