Geator Gold - Vol. 3: Christmas Special...
Meet The Supremes and The Temptations!

And that's the latest from S-P-M-M news...

MEET THE SUPREMES!

 "Tonight" - The Supremes
 (June 1956)

That's right, you just met The Supremes! Fiction and Fact
from the Geator's Almanac: If you're confused by what you
just heard, those were indeed The Supremes, but not the
Motown girl group you were expecting. This Supremes
group was an all male doo-wop act from the Bronx, and
that was their 1956 single, the sweet ballad "Tonight."

Greetings and
sal-u-ta-tions!

am The Geator with the Heater.
I am The Boss with the Big Hot
Sauce, welcoming all my yon
teenagers to another fantastic
bombastic edition of my show
Geator Gold here on S-P-M-M,
the station that's number-1 for
music and fun. In this special
2019 yearender, you'll meet the
Supremes and you'll also meet
the Temptations but, as you
might have guessed by now,
there are surprises in store.

Here's another one. Recorded in 1955 or 1956 and previously
unreleased, the song "Zip Boom" aka "Zip-Boom" has been
released on singles, albums and CDs as by those Bronx-
based Supremes,  but music historians insist the record
was made, not by The Supremes, but by a mystery
group. Whoever made the record, it's
New York doo-wop at its best!

 "Zip-Boom" - The Supremes {misidentified "mystery group"}
 (1955 or 1956, unreleased)

That was "Zip-Boom," a monumental
up tempo doo-wop sound credited to
The Supremes but more likely waxed
by a mystery group. Haphazard filing
and labeling practices at Old Town
Records is blamed for the mix-up.

Now there was another little known
Supremes group, this one formed in
Columbus, Ohio, in 1954 and some-
times referred to as The Columbus
Supremes. This all male doo-wop
act released only one record with
"Just For You And I" on the A side
and "Don't Leave Me Here To Cry"
as the killer B. Meet The Supremes!

"Don't Leave Me Here To Cry" - The Supremes
(Sept. 1957, B side of "Just For You And I")

From the fall of 1957, that was another obscure boy group named
The Supremes singing "Don't Leave Me Here To Cry, the fab
flip side of their single "Just For You And I."

If you're just tuning in, this is the one
and only Jerry Blavat, The Geator with
the Heater, and you're listening to a
special edition of Geator Gold - Meet
The Supremes and The Temptations
here on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
On Geator Gold, we play 'em from
the heart, not the chart. You already
met The Supremes doo-wop group
from the Bronx, New York, and you
listened to a rusty relic by a mystery
group incorrectly identified as those
New York Supremes. You also met
another doo-wop group of the 50s,
The Supremes from Columbus, Ohio.
Now meet the Motown girl group that
made the name famous, Diana Ross
and The Supremes, but the song they
are going to sing is not one of their own.

The gals don't even sound like themselves as they cover the first single by
Liverpool's Merseybeat band Gerry And The Pacemakers-- "How Do You Do It!"

That was an unusual sound from Diana Ross And The Supremes
as they covered "How Do You Do It," the debut single released
by the English group Gerry And The Pacemakers, a track on
The Supremes' third studio album A Bit Of Liverpool.

MEET THE TEMPTATIONS!

You met The Supremes. Now it's time
for you to meet The Temptations,
in this case a white doo-wop act
based in Flushing, New York.
In the spring of 1960, this
Temptations group made
the top 30 with a cool
song called "Barbara."

doo-wop Temptations with their
claim to fame, the 1960 hit single
"Barbara," not to be confused
with "Barbara-Ann."

And as all good things must come to an end, so too must today's special
Meet The Supremes and Meet The Temptations edition of Geator Gold.
Thanks a lot for tuning in.

Don't touch that dial, because my pal
Shady Seaweed's up next with his annual
New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady show,
and I'll be back in 2020 with more nostalgic
nifties of the 60s and 50s on S-P-M-M...

  1. Merry Christmas, Tom!

You sure had me with the boy band, The Supremes! I had no idea there was another group other than Diana Ross & THE SUPREMES until now! That doo-wop white boys band, The Temptation, pulled the wool over my ears for years. Great mewsic set for your Christmas special. Now, take it easy, if you can! I know you and the wife have your hands full with the holidays and another move, so make time to enjoy yourselves when you can. Oh, yeah one more thing, don't forget to leave Santa cookies and milk! :)

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I am excited to see you so "dark" and early this morning, dear friend! Thanks for being the early bird this week. Mrs. Shady and I are getting a U-haul this morning, loading up and heading back across the state. I will be away from blogging all day and evening and plan to write a comment to that effect.

I'm glad you appreciated this introduction to Supremes and Temptations groups that few people know about, acts that recorded excellent doo-wop harmony in the 50s.

Thanks again for coming by so early, dear friend Cathy. Have a wonderful day and merry Christmas to you and DH!

    2. Tom,

I thought I'd make a quick visit to wish you and the Mrs. a very merry Christmas. Hopefully y'all can find time to unwind a bit to enjoy the holidays during your move. May we always allow Christ to shine through our lives to light the path for a sometimes a dark and troubled person. Prayers to you and yours for joyful celebration and blessings in the coming new year, my dear friend!

    3. Thank you, dear Cathy! That's very kind of you. This morning Mrs. S and I are heading out the door yet again on another family oriented mission. The months of January and February will be even busier with the actual move and another family member flying in from Asia to stay with us.

Thank you for spreading Christmas cheer throughout the year, dear friend Cathy!

  2. NOTICE!

Hi, dear friend! If you are kind enough to leave a comment on today's post, please be advised that I will be tied up all day and into the evening, traveling across the state, loading and unloading, and will not be able to leave a reply until late tonight or, more likely, over the weekend.

Thank you for your comment. I'll be back online a.s.a.p. Have a nice day!

  3. I used to take the New York Central train from the Botanical Garden Station in the Bronx to high school in White Plains in the late 50’s, early 60’s . Sometime, when I got off the train and walked under the tunnel to the other side, there were a group of young men practicing their doo-wap using the acoustics that came from the being in the tunnel to get their sound. It was their studio. I wonder if they made it. Others, nearby, did (Dion).

    1. Hi, Arleen!

I'm very happy to see you dear friend. Thanks for coming and welcome to volume 3 of Geator Gold hosted by The Geator With the Heater, a nickname I'm sure you know.

Wow, Arleen, thanks for sharing that interesting story from your youth. It reads like a scene from the film American Hot Wax. I'd say there was a good chance one or more of the young men you heard harmonizing under that tunnel went on to make significant contributions to the music business, probably not as a star of Dion's magnitude, but perhaps as a session singer or club entertainer. It would be fun to know for sure, wouldn't it? I really appreciate when readers share stories related to my posts like this one of yours.

Thank you again for joining the fun and merry Christmas to you, dear friend Arleen!

    1. Hi, Sherry!

Welcome back to Shady's Place, dear friend! After a day of travel and very hard work I am just now getting back online and sitting at the old borrowed laptop I need to use when we are away from home.

I am pleased to see a comment from you and to learn that your dad was a doo-wop lover when you were young. I learned something new today because I thought you only like chamber music. Thanks for letting me know you like doo-wop, too.

Same to you, Sherry. Merry Christmas to you and your family, including your lovable three-legged canine companion. I invite you to join me throughout 2020 for more fun and surprises, dear friend!

    2. Hi, Jerre!

Thanks for popping in, good buddy! I was hoping you'd see this doo-wop yearender presented by Jerry Blavat and weigh in on it. I also figured you knew the chart hit "Barbara." I like the fab flip equally well. How about those little known male doo-woppin' Supremes groups of the 50s and the Motown Supremes covering a Merseybeat hit? The Geator got us good!

Thanks for sticking with me year after year, Jerre. It makes me happy to know you're out there following along. Stay tuned for much more old school doo-wop coming up in 2020 presented by The Geator, Wolfman Jack, Dell Rat Ron, Dell Rat Tom, Debbie the Dellette and by you, Dell Rat Jerre. Big fun and great tunes ahead!

Happy holidays to you and your family, good buddy Jerre!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I'm just now getting on the computer after a tiring day of driving across the state and loading and unloading a 17-foot U-haul. Things went surprisingly well. If you live in Florida it's better to move now than to attempt it in July. :)

I'm glad you learned a thing or two from The Geator's special yearender radio show. Actually, I didn't know about those old Supremes groups either until I discovered them recently on YouTube. I was familiar with the "other" Temptations, and when I found so many great doo-wop sides by 50s Supremes groups I was inspired to have Jerry Blavat host this Meet The Supremes and Temptations special.

Thanks again for being a wonderful and devoted friend, Kelly. Merry Christmas to you and your loving animals!

  8. I wonder if these earlier Supremes and Temptations ever tried to sue when the later bands came along with the same names.

If you'll allow me to indulge a bit, all this reminds me of the man credited with coining the term "rock and roll", Alan Freed. As you know, I live in Cleveland, where we have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ever wonder why Cleveland and not Memphis or Chicago or Philadelphia or the city where the inductions take place, New York City? Well, outside of the fact that Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and Ohio officials agreed to foot the bill to build the thing, the "official" reason has to do with Alan Freed getting his start here. Leo Mintz, a man who owned a record store on the outskirts of a black neighborhood, convinced Freed to play some "race" records on his radio show. Freed did, it was a hit with white teenage listeners, and soon that was all he was playing. He decided to call his program "The Moondog Show" after an instrumental called "Moondog Symphony" recorded by an artist who also called himself Moondog. In the 1950s, Cleveland was known as a breakout town for new musical acts (another local deejay, Bill Randell, had helped popularize Elvis north of the Mason-Dixon line.) And so people in New York were made aware of Freed's popularity, and paid him a lot of money to move his radio show there. For a while, Freed used the name Moondog in New York. Unfortunately, the real Moondog found out about this and sued. Freed was forced to drop the name, and, as a substitute, chose an old blues/jazz euphemism for sex called "rock and roll". Anecdotal evidence suggests he also occasionally called the music that in Cleveland (hence Cleveland sometimes referring to itself as the "birthplace" of rock and roll) but in New York it was the actual name of the show and soon that's what everybody was calling the music, all because Moondog decided to sue. Now, I doubt if any lawsuits from the earlier Supremes or Temptations would have made linguistic history, but you never know.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for joining the fun as The Geator with the Heater spins Geator Gold and surprises us all with songs waxed by little known Supremes and Temptations groups along with a couple of seldom heard cuts by the "real" Supremes and Temps.

Thanks for sharing the fascinating background story explaining how and why "Cleveland Rocks" and how the genre came to be known as rock and roll. Ever see the film American Hot Wax? If the new style of music for teenagers originated in the black community and its name was inspired by a euphemism for the sex act, then it's no wonder southern white preachers cast fire and brimstone onto it from the pulpit.

It helps to be an established recording/touring act with a proven track record of success to mount a lawsuit. The obscure Temptations and Supremes acts introduced in this edition of Geator Gold released records on small labels for only a short period of time in the 1950s. (As I pointed out in my know-it-all comment on your blog recently, 1960 is still technically part of The Fifties decade.) By 1964 when Motown's Supremes and Temptations started making a name for themselves and stringing together hits, the older groups had vanished.

Thanks again for the interesting music history lesson, good buddy Kirk. I appreciate the time you put into it. I hope you are having a great weekend and I wish you a merry Christmas!

  9. Hi Jerry and Shady! Very interesting and enjoyable, indeed! I never knew of other Temptations either, and appreciate the history of more doo wop and rock n roll!

I have to say, The Supremes with "Tonight" is a very pretty song, that actually gave me chills! I never heard them or the song before, but they pulled this beaut off with very little instrumentals behind them, and never faltered. This is a great group. Jerry, I agree, "Zip-Boom" is doo wop at its best. A great sax solo. These guys could master most anything!

A true old blues and rockabilly style describes "Don't Leave Me Here To Cry". I like the way you categorize them as "The Columbus Supremes". They make me think of The Silhouettes, "Get A Job".

I can't say I am impressed with the Diana Ross and Supremes cover of "How Do You Do It". Actually, I am not fond of Gerry and the Pacemakers recording of this one.

"Someday" is one of my favorites of your offerings today, Jerry! The song delivers a good sound and beat with meaning-puts me in the mood for a slow dance.

Thank you Shady, for this cool Christmas post, and for leaving us with a nice "real" Temptations sound! In the end, they were the best!

I am sorry to be late, just have so much to do right now. Jerry, thank you for putting these groups together...I love a good music history lesson! Merry Christmas!

Shady, I hope you are doing well, and not overdoing! Thank you for this great Christmas post! Have a very Merry Christmas, dear friend! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Merry Pipsmas, dear friend! Oops, I'm still stuck on the previous post. :)

I'm glad to have you here to listen to Jerry Blavat's latest radio show on SPMM Retrosonic Radio... where we dig deep for doo-wop nuggets like these lost gems by little known Supremes and Temptations groups. I'm delighted that you enjoyed hearing these same name groups singing their forgotten relics. I agree that groups like these needed to have their street corner harmonies down before they entered the studio, because the instrumental backing was often sparse, giving their recordings a demo quality. Sometimes groups like these recorded and released a cappella singles.

That Merseybeat cover by Diana Ross & The Supremes showed up on YouTube only a few weeks ago. At first my ears cried WTF?... but the sound grew on me and I decided to give the song to The Geator for this post devoted to Supremes and Temps rarities. I owned the Motown Temptations' Psychedelic Shack album, and "You Need Love Like I do (Don't You) is one of my favorite tracks on the long play.

I know you must be slammed with Christmas preps, Suzanne, and I thank you very much for making time to drop by. Mrs. S and I just finished two grueling days of DIY truck loading, moving and unloading, and we're pooped. Stay tuned now for your favorite and mine, Shady Seaweed, and his annual New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady blogcast starting this Thursday, the 26th.

The Supreems are my favourite and they always add good tidings to my day.

I heard the Jackson 5's I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa twice this year. I've never heard it before, but I was delighted to hear a young Michael.

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I'm happy to know you love The Supremes, and I assume you mean the famous Motown girl group, not the boys featured in this post. Thanks for sharing the anecdote about hearing young Michael leading the Jackson 5 in singing "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa." One of my earliest childhood memories was listening to the original record by Jimmy Boyd which was waxed in 1952. My parents bought it for me and it might have been my introduction to vinyl records.

I wish you the same, dear friend JM. Happy Christmas and let's keep this ball rolling through 2020!

Thanks so much for coming, dear friend! I'm delighted that you enjoyed listening to these little known Supremes and Temptations doo-wop groups presented by The Boss With the Sauce in vol. 3 of Geator Gold.

Seems no one likes the "real" Supremes covering that Gerry And The Pacemakers song. The Motown super group was so hot in 1964 that they branched out and recorded an album of covers by Liverpool bands. I don't understand why that was necessary, but I must admit that "How Do You Do It" kinda grew on me even though it's an atypical sound by the ladies.

Mrs. Shady and I are actually moving in stages. This weekend we rented a U-haul truck and took tons of our belongings to our destination house. Less than a month from now I need to take a three week blog hiatus so that we can have professional movers take the rest of our stuff to the other house. I will need extra time to help clean the one we are currently in and unpack and get settled in our new home.

Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend YaYa. I wish you and your wonderful family a very happy Christmas!
