WWF Grudge Match 4: Don't Run With Headscissors!

Welcome to Round 4 of my

WWF (Wow What Fun)

Grudge Match!

This is the series inspired by the pro wrestling exhibitions I watched
on TV as a kid. Today I present, for your entertainment and edification,
three original recordings, two covers and one that samples the daylights
out of the original. I'd like you to tell me which recording or recordings
if ANY!!!... :) you like most. Ready... set...

LET THE

WWF Grudge Match

BEGIN!

Remember, ladies and gentlemen...

This is only an exhibition...
This is not a competition...
Please... no wagering.

 GRUDGE MATCH #1

"Tragedy"

 THE BEE GEES

Rockers revenge - "Disco Demolition
Night" - was still a few months away
and the disco oriented Bee Gees were
still going strong in the U.S. and UK
when in early '79 they released their
15th album Spirits Having Flown
which yielded three chart topping
singles including this one, "Tragedy,"
a song written by the brothers Gibb.

"Tragedy" - The Bee Gees
(Mar. 1979, highest cht pos. #1,
from Feb. 1979 album
Spirits Having Flown)

 STEPS

Fast forward two decades to 1999
when "Tragedy" turned to triumph
for the English group Steps. Re-
leased on a double A sided
single with "Heartbeat," the
dance pop cover reached #1.

"Tragedy" - Steps
(Feb./Mar. 1999, highest chart pos.
1 UK/New Zealand, released as
double A side of "Heartbeat")

 GRUDGE MATCH #2

"My Boyfriend's Back"

 THE ANGELS

In the late summer and fall of 1963 the girl group The Angels
topped the pop chart with their sig song "My Boyfriend's Back."

"My Boyfriend's Back" - The Angels
(Sept. 1963, highest chart pos. #1)

 KAT GRAHAM

In 2009 Kat Graham, the R&B/hip hop singer
and actress known for her role on the TV series
The Vampire Diaries, released "Boyfriend's
Back," a rap song that samples the Angels' hit.
Kat's kool kaper might not be a cover in the
strictest sense, but it's close enough..
and it slays!

"Boyfriend's Back" - Kat Graham
(2009 cover and video)

 GRUDGE MATCH #3

"Grease"

 FRANKIE VALLI

In 1978 Frankie Valli had a #1 charting hit with "Grease," the title
song of the musical film based on the stage play of the same name.

"Grease" - Frankie Valli
(July/Aug. 1978, highest chart pos. #1,
live perf. on Soul Trainfrom OST of Grease)

 DAB feat.   SUSHY

Susanna Galimi, stage name Sushy,
is a pop singer and songwriter from
Milan, Italy. DAB is Diego Abaribi,
an Italian DJ and producer. In 2009
Sushy & Diego teamed up to make
this "Grease" cover and video.

featuring Sushy (2009 single)

I'm grappling with the idea

of bringing you more volumes of

WWF Grudge Match

in the near future.

  1. Didn't care for the Grease remake. The Tragedy remake was good though. Only a woman could hit those high notes!

    1. Hi, Alex!

You're the early bird yet again, good buddy. Thanks for coming by!

Sushy's dance remake of "Grease" targeted clubbers in places like Ibiza. The tempo is a wee bit too fast to suit my taste, but I do like Sushy as a performer and I will have more of her recordings in future posts. The Steps remake of the Bee Gees hit stays close to the original and the music video is fun to watch.

Thanks again for witnessing the WWF Grudge Match, good buddy Alex!

  2. Tom,

I think it's interesting that used Steps' "Tragedy" cover of the Bee Gees hit song because just the other day while doing some catch up in Blogosphere I listened to a YT playlist I found. I enjoyed this as well as many of their covers. I can't figure out why I don't remember them from their early years. I believe they still purrform. In fact, I just noticed Wikipedia reports the band is expecting to cut a new album sometime this summer.

Well, you know I like Kat Graham. Her hip rap version of a classic kept that upbeat vibe with fresh, fun twist for the new generation. It's not a recording I would buy but I appreciated her purrsonal spin to make it her own.

DAB is new2me, so is Sushy. The arrangement doesn't veer too far from the orignial but there's something about it that doesn't match my ears purrfectly. I did like Sushy's vocals and am interesting in checking out YT for more of her mewsic.

This WWF Grudge Match was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to more match ups in the future. Have a grea day, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

How are you, dear friend? I am very happy to see you! Thanks so much for dropping by for round 4 of my WWF Grudge Match, an event that closely resembles BOTB. :)

I think Steps is mainly known in the UK. I never heard of them before doing research for blog posts like this one. The Steps version of "Tragedy" is good enough to be called a classic in its own right, I think, even if it is highly derivative of the original. The video is clever and entertaining.

Yessum, I was hoping you'd stop by because I wanted to praise you once again for being the person who introduced me to Kat Graham a few years ago. I like her style and her sassy approach to "Boyfriend's Back" which, I believe, also samples "Mickey" by Toni Basil. Do you hear the similarity? In fact, Wiki lists 8 songs that sample "Mickey," even though Toni Basil's original is found on lists of the most annoying records ever made.

Sushy is an Italian singer and songwriter. What you hear in her "Grease" cover is the 21st century manifestation of "Italo-disco," a style that sounds foreign to many ears in the USA. I developed a taste for Italian and Romanian dance mewsic a few years ago and enjoy listening to artists who perform in those categories.

Thanks again for making time for a visit and for your super comment, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your day and week!

  3. Hi Tom! It's been a minute, huh? It's good to be back. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up. And I just gotta say: WWF?
    Hell yeah, Wow, What Fun!
    I love this!
You put together three great songs to grudge match. And matched them up with three great covers (or sorta cover).
As for Grudge Match #1: I am a huge Bee Gees fan and "Tragedy" is one of my favorites. Steps did a good job with it but, in my mind, no one can top the original Bee Gees in covers. (on a side note: On my TiVo I have saved a 2-hour special called "Stayin' Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of the Bee Gees". Have you seen it? It's really good).

Grudge Match #2: I love the Angels song and while I was listening to it, my head was a-bobbin' and my neck was doing that turkey thang... haha, Yeah, I was getting into it.
And then I listened to Kat Graham's "cover" and I loved it! It was not only a fun song but a super fun video. I wouldn't pick one over the other in this match: I'll take both please...

Grudge Match #3: Another great classic, Frankie Valli's "Grease" is one of those timeless tunes. I thoroughly enjoyed his Soul Train performance.
And I loved Sushy's version. I never heard of her and probably wouldn't have ever if not for your presenting her so thanks for that. Sushy and Diego together did a great team project on this song. It was a fun production and I really liked Sushy's voice and attitude. She's very striking in a cool kinda way. So in this match, I'll take both.

I'm not a WWF Wrestling fan but I sure am a Shady's Place WWF fan! When do tickets for the next event go on sale??

    Have a great my friend.

    1. Hi, Michele!

Wow, it's great to see you back here at Shady's Place, dear friend. Thanks for coming to the WWF Grudge Match!

I'm thrilled to know you got so much enjoyment from these match-ups. I have not yet seen that Bee Gees special. I'll check it out. I am delighted that you like Kat Graham's heavy sampling of The Angels' biggie "My Boyfriend's Back." Can you also hear Toni Basil's "Mickey" in the school band's drumbeats? Kat hasn't release many new recordings in the last couple of years. Seems like she is focusing more on her acting career which is going strong with numerous TV and film projects recently completed, in post-production or in the works.

Frankie Valli, Michael McDonald and Elton John were among the very few white musicians invited to perform on Soul Train. I used Frankie's "Grease" clip in this post in order to have it battle against Sushy's version. Sushy, an exciting Italian dance-pop singer, is a new favorite of mine, and I will be bringing you more of her songs and videos in the future.

Hey, dearie, before I forget, I wanted to let you know that I submitted a comment to your 4M post early yesterday morning, but I see that you still haven't approved it for publishing. It should be in your "awaiting moderation" folder. At least I hope it is. Would you please take a look?

Thank you again for swinging over from Austin, dear friend Michele. I hope you, your mother, Luca, Picasso and the rest of your canine clan are doing well. Take care, have a great week, and I hope to see you again soon!

  4. Okay... I definitely liked the original best for all of these. I thought Tragedy was a decent cover, but I've always been a pretty big fan of the BeeGees. ;) The second number was different enough from its original that I enjoyed it, but still prefer the original (kind of a classic). The Grease number just struck me as kind of meh.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it! Hope you enjoy the rest of your week, Shady. Ours should be WET!!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks a lot for coming by, dear Arkansas friend! Welcome to round 4 of this SPMM sports exclusive - The WWF Grudge Match!

Young as you are I am a bit surprised that you favored all three of the oldies in this 3-part match, the original recordings. I wasn't aware that you are a fan of the Bee Gees. I like them too, although I prefer their 60s early career output to their 70s disco era recordings.

I wouldn't dream of trying to twist your arm and change your mind, Kelly. I like all six songs and apparently so do you, at least to some degree. We are therefore pretty much in sync.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly. I hope you don't have any flooding to deal with over your way. Stay dry, have a great week and remember... don't run with headscissors. :)

  5. Wow, What Fun, for Sure! You picked some pretty good ones with good covers, Shady! Cool opening photo of the two wrestlers...the blonde looks like Marilyn Monroe, haha! Sometimes we would watch a little wrestling on Saturday nights if nothing else was showing on TV. My dad always got a kick out of the women wrestlers...they weren't usually very attractive in the ring.

Oh, really love the BeeGees and miss them terribly! "Tragedy" is a great song, and I liked seeing the video. The BeeGees almost always had great facial expressions, with smiles and happiness, even in their times of tragedy! I am always amazed at how they wrote such great songs, and performed them with so much feeling. The Steps do a good job covering "Tragedy", however, it doesn't come across as tragic as the brothers Gibb present the song.

Kat Graham is very cute and talented, and has a different outlook on what happens when her boyfriend is back, doesn't she! It is a good cover, but for me I prefer the drama of The Angels side of the story.

I've got to go with door #3. "Grease" is a classic. I love Frankie Valli, and I am so glad he recorded this one, because he has the perfect voice for it, and I just like seeing him in the videos! Now, Dab and Sushy are a whole different story! They cover this one very well, and give the song a whole new dimension...well, they bring the song to life with their interpretations in the video.

So, good, Shady! Good songs with good covers! There are many talented artists out there who cover the greats! I watch the Voice, and I just can't believe we are blessed with so many beautiful singing voices. I don't vote, because the decision is too difficult for me to make. I like them all, and will just sit back and enjoy!

Thank you for this WWWWWFun post, dear friend. Take care, don't get rained out! We're gloomy today, but there is not supposed to be rainstorms too close by. Have a very nice week, Shady! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks so much for taking a ringside seat for the 4th of my exclusive sports exhibitions, the WWF Grudge Match! Remember, if I catch you wagering on the outcome of these bouts, I will be forced to make a citizen's arrest. :)

Hey, the gal going to the mat in that picture sure does look like Marilyn Monroe. Now we know how she got her start. :) Just think, a few years after that picture was taken she was grappling with Tony Curtis on a yacht as he did his best Cary Grant impression.

I never watched lady wrestlers. As I recall only the male wrestling events were shown on the program I watched. However, I dug roller derby which had female teams as well as male teams - the San Francisco Bay Area Bombers in the 50s and the Philadelphia Warriors in the 60s.

I agree. The Brothers Gibb put lots of feeling into their songs and performances. I enjoy their disco offerings, but prefer their early recordings from the 60s such as "NY Mining Disaster," "I Can't See Nobody," "To Love Somebody," "Holiday," "Massachusetts," "Words," and "I've Gotta Get A Message To You." I'm glad you got some enjoyment from the covers by Steps and Kat Graham. I agree again that Frankie Valli was exciting to watch because, like the Bee Gees, he put genuine feeling and soul into his vocals. Frankie's 70s solo singles "Swearin' To God" and "Grease" both reached the top 40 on the R&B chart, making it easy to understand why he was invited aboard the Soul Train. I'm tickled to know you appreciated the sped up rendition of "Grease" recorded by Italian zinger Sushy in collaboration with DAB. Sushy has collaborated with other DJ/producer types and I will be presenting more of her stuff in future posts.

It's been gloomy here, too, but not much in the way of rainfall. We could use some, along with a refreshing cold front. :)

Thank you again for your visit and wonderful comment, dear friend Suzanne. Please give Scootie a hug for me and enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Hi, Arleen!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks so much for coming by and experiencing these musical exhibition matches!

I don't know about you, but I loved The Bee Gees' early career recordings made in the 60s. I owned their singles and albums on vinyl and, later on, bought their CD compilations. What a talented band of brothers, and those that are no longer with us are indeed missed. "We'll never have that recipe again."

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts about the Brothers Gibb. I am always very happy to see you. Take care and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Arleen!

  7. I have always like the Bee Gees and sad that so many are gone now. There was just something about the group so talented. I thought the Tragedy cover was really funny especially the dance. Now I will have that song in my brain for quite awhile.
The other covers were OK and I remember "My Boyfriend Back" playing on the radio all the time.
    Terrific post today.

I'm happy to know you enjoyed these three exhibition bouts. I hope you resisted the urge to place bets on the outcomes because wagering is strictly prohibited. :)

Yessum, the Bee Gees were a unique and wonderful group that sang nicely crafted songs in perfect harmony. Fortunately we have their remastered recordings and videos to remember their greatness. I'm glad you appreciated the clever music video put together for The Steps' version of "Tragedy" in the late 90s. You're right. "Tragedy" is such a catchy song that it is an ear worm. I've been playing it in my mind ever since the post went live. I can think of worse fates than to have that song stuck in my head all day. I was pleased to find this stereo version of The Angels' biggie "My Boyfriend's Back."

Thanks again for coming to play, dear friend Gayle, and enjoy the rest of your week!

You seem to like all three of the original recordings in this post and all three of the remakes. That's great! The Bee Gees impressed me with their longevity and their versatility. The music world will never be the same without them. I'm delighted to know you enjoyed how Steps and Kat Graham gave the oldies a fresh new sound along with fun music videos.

Thank you very much for your visit and cheery comment, dear friend Holli, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  9. Well, if my ears are supposed to judge these match-ups, I have to come out in favor of the originals, though "Tragedy" wins only by a hair-thin margin.

However, if my eyes are the judge, I enjoyed WATCHING the remakes a lot more than the originals. Some great visuals there.

By the way, you kind of feature Barry Gibb twice. He may not have sung "Grease", but he did write it.

Thanks for popping in, good buddy! (Please... no wagering!)

Good point about Barry Gibb! I appreciate the tidbit. I agree that in this post-MTV era, the music videos need to be evaluated along with the actual recorded sound. Steps won me over on both counts, and I also love the look, sound and sassy style of actress and recording artist Kat Graham. I introduced Kat a few years ago on the old blog and she will be back in future posts as well.

Thanks again for joining the fun and adding to the discussion, good buddy Kirk. Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!

  10. You know, I never knew what the Bee gees were saying..now I know! I am always amazed he could sing that high. I figured he must have been repeatedly kicked in the ballsy until they just stayed up there. I have to say i like the newer version and the video was funny. The next one...I still prefer the first one as I just like the simple style. Grease....I still give it to Valli as I did not care for the girl at all but she does have a great voice if she got coached properly. So there are my 3 choices-2 for the original and the first to the new kids. Have a wonderful day and weekend

I don't mind you turning thumbs down on Kat Graham and Italian dance popper Sushy, as long as you didn't place bets on the outcomes of those matches in advance. :)

I'm not familiar with "Steps", but I can honestly say that this had to be the best cover. As someone said above, "only a woman can hit those high notes."

I'm in the process of making Mother's Day cards for the women at work. It's something I do each year to spread kindness to moms. I'll have to give the other two a closer listen tomorrow. It's been a busy week.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming by, dear friend!

I'm happy you appreciated the more than capable cover of "Tragedy" by the English group Steps. The double-A sided single (with "Heartbeat") remains their best known hit, but they've had a string of high charting records in the UK, Australia, Ireland and The Netherlands over the years. Steps was still together and releasing records as recently as 2018.

I hope you will return and give the other covers and originals a listen. Until then enjoy what remains of your Thankful Thursday and have a great Friday and weekend, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

I listened earlier at work and to me, it seems like young ladies in the late 2000s and 2010s love to modernize old hits. What Kat Graham did to "My Boyfriend's Back" reminds me of what Grace did to Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me" in 2015. Take a listen for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SeRU_ZPDkE&app=desktop

It sounds like these young women are trying to turn sexism around a bit, however, I love Grace's cover because you get the guy's perspective (oh, G Easy!). I think Leslie Gore was more of a rebel anyway. My Boyfriend's Back by the Angels has always been a favourite.

I think the last song you posted sounded like the original, except the beat was more modern. It reminded me of the Steps cover because it kept to the original.

I've been listening to Insane Clown Posse a lot and they have been covering a lot of 80s and 90s hits. Some are graphic, but I want to share them:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfuypT3zLLo&app=desktop cover of Electric Ave.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDpYYj0jdx0&app=desktop Jump Around by House of Pain

Sean Kingston also changed around "Stand By Me" for "Beautiful Girl."

Thanks for the cover music fun!

    3. Hi again, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming back to finish listening, dear friend! The second and third covers are more of a departure from the originals than the Steps cover, I would say. I was already familiar with the Grace cover of the big Lesley Gore hit of the 60s. I like Grace's update a lot, especially because it features a guest rapper for added street cred. If Lesley Gore's activism on behalf of LGBT issues and the fact that she came out as a lesbian make her a "rebel" then I don't think she would have minded that label.

I enjoyed your recommended ICP song "West Vernor Ave" which samples Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue" and the song "Jump Around." It's been a while since I listened to rap and I found it refreshing. Fabulous covers and heavy sample songs abound in recent years. Thanks for turning me on to some of your faves. I'm glad you enjoyed mine.

Have a great weekend, dear friend JM, and come over and say hello on Mother's Day if you get a chance!

    4. Hi Shady,

Knowing Leslie, she would be grinning cheek to cheek with that label. She was one of my favourites when I was a child and I loved singing her songs. I especially loved, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to!" The Angel's "My Boyfriend's Back" was another favourite and when I saw that you posted it, I squealed with excitement - sad, but true.

Thank you, Shady. Sometimes I'm afraid to share some of my music with people because I'm not quite sure how it'll be received. ICP has always been my favourite, although I love Twiztid a bit more (in the early 2000s, Twiztid did a cover of the Doors' "People Are Strange", check it out if you wish), but I know some people look at me weirdly when I mention my love for the Psychopathic group. Now that they are labeled as a gang because of some criminal elements (85-90% of the Juggalo community is friendly and nice, just like me, and are not criminals, but the FBI put us on a list because 10-15% are criminals) and it's not fair. However, I feel like most peaceful things have been hijacked.

I'll stop by! I hope that you have a great weekend too, my friend!

    5. Hi again, Jessica Marie!

I'm sure your dad had something to do with exposing you to the classic girl pop sounds of The Angels and Lesley Gore.

Wow, JM - I went to YouTube and played the cover of "People Are Strange" by Twiztid from their album Freek Show released at Halloween 2000. I couldn't stop listening until the song was over, it's that good - heavy as hell! Thanks for tipping me off about it. Yessum, I saw a banner suggesting Juggalos are the most hated fans in the world. That negative label certainly doesn't apply to you.

Thanks again for returning to listen to the rest of my tuneage, dear friend JM. There are more of your dad's oldies coming up tomorrow morning in my annual Mother's Day post, so hug your mom and stay tuned!

I was hoping you'd let us know if you are familiar with DJ and music producer Diego Abaribi aka DAB and Italian dance-pop singer Susanna Rosaria Galimi aka Sushy. Their 21st century collaboration is keeping alive a style of techno, electronic synth-pop music rooted in the Italo disco movement of the 70s and 80s. Sushy has been releasing records for the last ten years and I will be presenting more of her recordings and videos in future posts. I am pleased that you enjoyed the video of Frankie Valli singing the original version of "Grease" on Soul Train.
