 The AI-Team, Vol 2

"I pity the fool who don't like these songs!"

 Old School's the Rule

 In the Battle Against
 The Anime From Within!

No, dear friend. That's not a typo in the title at the top of the page.

Today's post does not focus on The A-Team.

It focuses on
The AI-Team...
delightful characters
emerging from the
rapidly expanding
 cutting-edge
technology of
Artificial
Intelligence
art.

Yessum, we're in the middle of an AI boom,
and today's post offers a mix of past and present...

...20th century boomer songs and dazzling
AI art renderings of the 21st century.

In a recent post hosted by
Dr. Mary Harris from the
TV series Mary Kills People,
you heard three Mary songs:
"Sweet Mary," "The Wind
Cries Mary" and "Along
Comes Mary."  In this
edition of AI-Team,
Shady Del Knight is
once again going all
girlie on you, playing
ten of his favorite songs
that also have a girl's
name in the title.

To illustrate the theme
of the post, the songs
are accompanied by
modern AI-generated
images of women
and girls.

How many of these
 girl name songs do
you know, remember
or like hearing for
the first time?

Lulu

Our first featured girl song is a real Lulu. Released
at the height of the surf-rock craze, this gem of
the genre swept the nation like a tidal wave.

Jan And Dean tell the tale of the whale, introducing
the queen of the surfer girls-- "Honolulu Lulu!"

"Honolulu Lulu" - Jan And Dean
(Sept./Oct. 1963, highest chart pos.
#11 Hot 100/#10 Cash Box)

Linda

At the start of that same year, 1963, Jan & Dean released this
next song as their last single in the doo-wop/teen pop vein.

(The record that followed, the chart-topper  "Surf City,"
firmly established J&D as a hit-making surf-rock duo.)

What an interesting story behind this song! It was written
for a baby girl who went on to fame as Linda McCartney,
the wife of Beatles' dreamboat Paul McCartney!

In 1942, while on a tour of Europe during WWII,
American songwriter Jack Lawrence dedicated
a ditty to Linda Eastman, the one-year-old
daughter of his attorney Lee Eastman.

The song, published in 1946 after Lawrence left the military,
was recorded by several artists, but Jan And Dean's version
is the grabber. Penetrating the top 30 in the spring of '63,
here's the toe-tapping song about-- "l-l, l-l-l, l-l-l-l-Linda!"

"Linda" - Jan And Dean
(Apr./May 1963, highest chart pos.
#26 Cash Box/#28 Hot 100)

Susan

In the mid 60s, American record buyers were going wild
over British bands. To imply that they too came from the UK,
a polished, horn-driven, blue-eyed soul and psychedelic pop
band from Chicago were given the name The Buckinghams.

1967 was the biggest year for The Bucks. All 5 of their top 40
hits charted that year... leading Billboard magazine to name
The Buckinghams "The Most Listened to Band in America."

Here's lead singer Dennis Tufano and The Buckinghams with the
last single in the group's 1967 hot streak, a song about-- "Susan!"

#6 Record World/#7 Cash Box,
#11 Billboard/#7 Canada)

Sally #1

Our next girl name song was originally waxed by rock & roll
legend Little Richard. In 1956, Richard's single spent 19 weeks
atop the R&B chart and brushed the top 5 on the pop survey.

Eight years later, The Beatles, who admired Little Richard
and performed his hits during their concerts, released
a great cover. I found a brilliantly remixed version and
reimagined video for your listening and viewing pleasure.

From May, 1964, here are The Beatles with Paul McCartney
on lead singing the praises of-- "Long Tall Sally!"

"Long Tall Sally" - The Beatles
(from May 1964 album The Beatles' Long Tall Sally,
rel. as single and reached #1 in Sweden & Denmark
in June, July & August 1964)

Jenny

Rock & Roll titan Little Richard is also the inspiration
behind the next featured girl song. In 1957, Richard's
original entitled "Jenny, Jenny" peaked at #2 on the
R&B chart and went top 10 on the pop survey.

In late 1965, rock & roll/R&B wildman Mitch Ryder used
"Jenny, Jenny" in a mashup with "See See Rider Blues"
aka "See See Rider" aka "C.C. Rider," a blues song
from the 1920s about a lover who sleeps around.

Pam

Now here's another Beatles song with the name of a girl in the title.

Elenor #1

Check out this groovy girl song by The Turtles,
the LA-based psychedelic pop band led by
Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman.

With deliberately goofy lyrics, the ditty was penned as
a satire of the group's biggest pop hit "Happy Together."

One of the first pop recordings to utilize the Moog synthesizer,
the Turtles' single had a vibe that listeners couldn't resist
and the record made the top 5 in the fall of 1968.

their latest hit live on Kraft Music Hall!

Sally #2

Now here's the second Sally song in today's lineup.  R&B singer
and songwriter Mack Rice wrote and first recorded this ditty
in 1965. Rice's version reached its peak at #15 on the R&B
chart, an achievement that was eclipsed the following year
when gravel-voiced R&B great Wilson Pickett covered it.

Pickett's record went top 5 on the R&B survey and crossed over
to the pop chart, penetrating the top 20 on Cash Box and the
top 5 in Canada. Pickett's version is also ranked #114 on
my list of The 200 Greatest Hits of the Shady Dell.

of All Time - "Mustang Sally!"

Renee

The Left Banke was a baroque psychedelic pop band
based in New York City. Millions of fans across America
and around the globe were saddened when news broke in
January, 2020, that the group's lead singer, Steve Martin,
later known as Steve Martin Caro, died at the age of 71.

Martin possessed one of the most beautiful and distinctive
voices in all of pop music, as you will hear as he sings
one of the most evocative songs ever recorded, the
band's debut single, a top 5 hit in the fall of 1966.

Here are Steve Martin and The Left Banke with a song regarded as
the definitive work of the baroque pop genre-- "Walk Away Renee!"

"Walk Away Renee" - The Left Banke
(Oct./Nov. 1966, highest chart pos. #2 Cash Box/#5 Hot 100,
#129 The 200 Greatest Hits of the Shady Dell)

Eleanor #2

Earlier, The Turtles paid musical tribute to "Elenor."
To conclude today's show, here's a different girl song
with a different spelling of that same name. Released
along with "Yellow Submarine" on a double A-side
single in August, 1966, from the Beatles' Revolver
album, resulting in two chart-topping worldwide
hits, it's the story of a lonely, ageing spinster
by the name of-- "Eleanor Rigby!"

from Aug. 1966 album Revolver)

I hope you liked these girl name songs of the past
and new AI generated images of women and girls.

  1. I knew with enough Eleanors we'd eventually see Eleanor Rigby.
Some AI is really good but there is still just something off a bit. Maybe it's the lack of a soul?

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for racing over to take the gold medal as the Early Bird this month, good buddy!

A couple of years ago, it was relatively easy to spot an AI image of a human. Lately, in my experience, it is becoming a lot harder to tell.

"Is it live, or is it Memorex?" "Only her hairdresser knows for sure." As these old ad slogans remind us, the deception started many decades ago.

Thanks again for joining the AI-Team, good buddy Alex. See you next month!

  2. I knew them all and my favorite was Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett. I saw him in person but don't remember the show. You can always tell the AI because they all look like perfect dreams! Jerre

    1. Hi, Jerre!

Thanks for popping in for Vol. 2 of the AI-Team, good buddy! I'm pleased that you know all of these old girl name songs, and that your favorite is a Dell song that made my Top 200 list. Wicked Pickett's Mack Rice cover single was released in November, 1966. Of the three, the version I actually like best is the one by The Young Rascals released earlier that year, in February, on the B side of "Good Lovin'" which was also a cover. "Good Lovin'" was first recorded by a soul singer named Lemme B. Good in March, 1965. His real name was Limmie Snell and sadly he took ill and died young at the age of 37. In April, 1965, R&B giants The Olympics charted with a version of "Good Lovin'" that contained different lyrics. The Rascals' slowed-down and super cool version of "Mustang Sally" is ranked way up there at #22 on my Dell's Greatest Hits survey.

Yes, AI women are perfect in every way, and setting the bar impossibly high for today's real women.

Thanks for coming over for my second post of the year, good buddy Jerre. I have my next one scheduled for March 12 and hope to see you then!

  3. Hi, Shady! I'm afraid I just can't get on the AI bandwagon for a variety of reasons. I'm amused by some of the dog and cat content I see, but in general I find it a disturbing trend that doesn't bode well.

On a cheerier note, I enjoyed your Beatles selections, especially the one from my all-time favorite Beatles LP. Abbey Road!

Pat sends his regards, despite the fact you referred to him a bug-eyed. 😂

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

You take the bronze, dear friend! You take the bronze for team Arkansas! :)

Thanks for bringing my buddy Pat over for a look and a listen as I present Part 2 of The AI-Team. Yessum, it's scary how real and lifelike AI-generated humans and animals can be made to look, sound and act. I'm sure that the atomic bomb seemed like a great idea at the time too. Mrs. Shady showed me the cutest dog video the other day, and I strongly suspect it was AI.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the Beatles selections in this set of girl name songs. I love how they are creating those reimagined performance videos, another example of bending and shaping reality.

Please tell my buddy Pat that dogs with bug-eyes are considered cute or, in his case, handsome and distinguished. :)

Thanks again for coming by for a visit, dear friend Kelly. Happy Valentine's day (tamale) and enjoy the rest of your month. I hope to reconnect with you when I return to blogging on the 12th of March!

  4. Hello my Dear Shady...I hope all is well with you. Im praying we get our wish...the orange goo will soon be no more....the cracks are really showing. These Anime gals are every Asian boys' wet dream...lol. talk about developments! The music is great and I have not heard of some of these surfing ones nor even the one Beatles. I believe I have heard of the Buckinghams but not sure about this one you showcase. Love Mustang Sally and Renee. If you ever find a song with my name in it, you will knock me over with a feather@
Ive had a little scare...they found a 7mm mass on my right breast but the Dr. Told me that from the look of it and that I have a little discomfort, it's about a 2% chance that it's cancer. Thank goodness. I will gi back in August for another Mammogram but I felt better after talk8ng to the Dr. Funny, if it was cancer, I'd feel no pain or discomfort. Anyhoo Harley say woof! Take care

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Welcome in, dear friend! I'm delighted to have you here to experience the sights and sounds of The AI-Team. Remember what Mr. T always says: "I pity the fool who don't like these songs!' :)

Yessum, how about those art renderings of women and girls? I affectionately call them "The Anime From Within." :) I'm pleased that you enjoyed the girl name songs selected for this volume of the series. I love them all, but "Susan," "Elenor" and Walk Away Renee" would be my top picks. Yessum, I'll have to get busy searching for a song with "Birgit" or "BB" in the title. :)

Gosh, I am sorry you had a medical scare, dear friend. You've got enough on your plate as it is. The last thing you needed was more to worry about. Imagine that. The fact that your mass is painful is actually a good sign. I hope you get the all clear from the doctor when you have your follow-up mammogram. I know those procedures are an ordeal because Mrs. Shady complains loudly every time she needs to have one. Anyway, thanks for sharing that news. I'll be thinking about you, Birgit.

Please give my buddy Harley a big smooch on the mouth and take good care of yourself until we meet again around the 12th of March. Thank you very much for your kind visit and comment, dear friend BB!

  5. Hello dear friend Shady, I like all the illustrations. This time I am a bit more familiar with the things in this post. I love ❤️ Jan and Dean, The Beatles and my favourite album by The Beatles is Abbey Road. The Turtles 🐢 So Happy Together comes to mind.
I will be back later to comment further.
Thank you so much for sharing, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Linda!

Welcome welcome welcome, dear friend! I'm happy to see you in the sea of faces that have gathered here in Shady's clubhouse for my February post. :)

I'm thrilled that you appreciate the illustrations, and pleasantly surprised that you know and like Jan & Dean. Given your age, considerable younger than Shady, I wouldn't have thought you are familiar with the surf-rock duo. You and friend Kelly (above) agree on the Beatles and their Abbey Road album. I, on the other hand, like their Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper. Magical Mystery Tour and double White Album more so than Abbey Road. I believe the explanation is gender related. Most women I know love cuddly Paul who sang lead on most songs on Abbey Road, while I always favored John and George.

Thank you for taking in interest in my content, dear friend Linda. If you have time to return and feel like doing so, I will welcome you again. Happy Valentine's Day to you as well!

  6. Dear Shady, Sir Paul McCartney was always my favourite Beatle. My second favourite was George Harrison ❤️
Jan and Dean...my favourite song 🎵 by them is I Get Around.
One of my favourite Beatles songs is I'll Follow the Sun. But I like all the songs on the Abbey Road album, and it was the only Beatles album I ever had because of that.

    1. Hi, Linda!

Thank you so much for returning to chat, dear friend!

Before I forget, how about the interesting backstory about the origin of the "Linda" song? Until I did my research for this post, I wasn't aware that the song was written about Paul's wife when she was just a toddler. I too love the Beatles song "I'll Follow The Sun." I'm glad you like Beatle George.

Thanks again for your repeat visits and interesting comments, dear friend Linda. If I don't see you again, enjoy the rest of your month and look for my return to the blog scene on March 12. Take care!

I will say happy birthday to you right now, dear friend. Gosh, 56 is incredibly young, Mary. You are more than 20 years younger than Shady! I can picture my buddy Falcor digging into his bags of treats. If he's happy, I'm happy.

Please take good care of yourself and your family and I'll catch up with you when I return with my next post on March 12. Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary!

  8. Hi Shady! I know I'm way late with commenting, but I do hope you get to read this on your next post. I loved all the songs, and I knew all the artists but just a couple of the songs were new to me. What struck me the most was the song "Linda" because growing up I had a really good friend in junior high and just one year of high school until she moved up north to Wisconsin. We kept in touch until a few years ago when she just disappeared from social media as well as her address and phone #. I know I would have laughed at calling her Linda in the way the song did, but we didn't know each other in '63. Anyway, thanks for the good memories of a good friend who I keep hoping is OK and maybe we'll connect again one day. Take care Shady and I hope you had a great Valentine's Day with Mrs. Shady and soon Spring will truly be here to stay!
