Winning Hand - Vol. 2: Shady's Got a Full House...
Plus an Extra Card Up His Sleeve!

Welcome to Winning Hand:

A Full House + 1 Extra!

In this edition of the series I will present three different versions of two
different songs. I'd like you to tell me which version or versions you prefer.

I might be a wild card and

a joker... but I'm no poker.

Therefore, without further delay, I will introduce
the kings and queens of song in today's post.

Remember, ladies and gentlemen...

This is only an exhibition...
This is not a competition...
Please... no wagering.

 DION

Around Halloween 1961, a year after leaving his doo-wop group
The Belmonts, Dion DiMucci scored a #1 hit solo single with
"Runaround Sue." Dion's ditty rode the pop chart 14 weeks
through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and into
the new year. "Runaround Sue" is listed by Rolling Stone
Magazine as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"Runaround Sue" - Dion
(Oct./Nov./Dec. 1961, highest chart pos. #1,
scene from Dec. 1961 film Twist Around The Clock)

 GINGER DAVIS
 & THE SNAPS

Ginger Davis and the Snaps were a doo-wop harmony quartet formed in
Philadelphia in 1959. Ginger and her three male singing partners released
only three singles in their brief career. Their second, "I'm No Run Around,"
is an answer song to Dion DiMucci's monster hit "Runaround Sue."

"I'm No Run Around" - Ginger Davis & The Snaps
(Oct./Nov. 1961, uncharted)

 LINDA LAURIE &
 THE DEL SATINS

Now here's "Stay-At-Home Sue," another answer to Dion's "Runaround Sue,"
this one recorded by Linda Laurie, a singer/songwriter who had a minor hit
in 1959 with the novelty single "Ambrose (Part 5)." In the background you
will hear the Del Satins, the group that sang backup on many of Dion's
solo recordings after he split with The Belmonts.

"Stay-At-Home Sue" - Linda Laurie & The Del Satins
(Nov. 1961, uncharted)

FLEETWOOD MAC

Now let's listen to three versions of our second featured song, "Dreams."
Composed of British and American members, Fleetwood Mac is one of the
world's oldest and most successful bands. Rumours, released in 1977,
is one of the best-selling albums in UK and U.S. history. "Dreams,"
a single from the album, reached #1 on the Billboard chart
and sold over a million copies.

"Dreams" - Fleetwood Mac
  (May/June 1977, highest chart pos. #1,
from Feb. 1977 album Rumours)

VAZQUEZ SOUNDS

You met Mexican songstress Angie Vazquez and her band of musical
brothers on Shady Dell Music & Memories in a volume of my 2016
dance pop/pop rock series. Vazquez Sounds, or V-Sounds as they
are often called, blew up on YouTube when Angie was only ten.
I love their 2012 cover of the Jackson 5 hit "I Want You Back."
Fast forward to 2016 and we find Angie and V-Sounds
doing an equally fine job on a cover of "Dreams."

"Dreams" - Vazquez Sounds
(2016 cover single)

DEEP DISH feat.
STEVIE NICKS

Deep Dish is a D.C. based EDM duo known for their house and
dance remixes of hits by major artists. In 2005 Fleetwood Mac's
lead vocalist Stevie Nicks rerecorded "Dreams" with Deep Dish.
Their single made the top 15 in the UK and reached the
top 30 on the U.S. Dance Club chart.

"Dreams" - Deep Dish feat. Stevie Nicks
(single from July 2005 Deep Dish album George is On
and Mar. 2007 Stevie Nicks album Crystal Visions)

I think these kings and queens
of song are aces!

Do you agree?

Have a Shady day!

  1. Have to admit that I scrolled right down in order to listen to Stevie ... again … friend Shady … Again, you ask? Ya … this song reminds much of when my son Paul was 16 and in big trouble in many ways … I listened to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie and Lindsey day and night … I don't I ever cried that much in ma life before, except when my baby Jenny died … I see you missed my post "Foofoo" … but that's okay … things happen … no worries, friend … as this mumme cat is a proud mumme of son Paul and daughter Mary … no matter what. Much love, cat.

    1. Hi, cat!

Thank you for being the early bird this time around, dear friend. I am pleased to see you!

I do believe this is the most you have ever shared in a comment directly related to the post. I appreciate that, cat, and urge you to do it more often. Of course I am sorry to learn the one song that resonates with you also triggers painful memories of the problems your son was having at the time. Even so, listening to "Dreams" apparently gave you comfort during those troubled times, and I hope you derived some pleasure this morning listening to the nicely remastered version I found.

Thank you again for hustling over bright and early, dear friend cat. Have a safe and happy weekend!

    2. You saw post "FooFoo" yet, friend Shady? … Paul is doing well … they just settled in Nelson, BC, Canada after their yearlong North American trip by van and with cat Benny … He has a good job and so does his wife Leanne … so proud of them … @paulleanneandavan … since I broke my knee cap thing, they have been out here to Alberta in order to help me with chores … so proud of them … Wishing you a very happy long weekend, friend Shady. Many purrs, cat.

    3. Hi, again, cat!

I just returned from your blog where I clicked back and found that older post. I remember following Paul, Leanne and Benny on their North American road trip, an exciting adventure for sure. It's good to know they are back home safe and sound, that both of them have good jobs, and that they came over from B.C. to help you with chores during your convalescence. You have every reason to be proud, dear friend cat!

  2. I definitely know Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks.
The girl answer songs is clever. Song titles are so varied - you could make a list like that for almost anything.
Teenager Weekly? Early edition of Seventeen perhaps?

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for coming over to examine my Winning Hand, good buddy!

Knowing you're much younger than Shady, I figured you would best know Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

I'm glad you like the answer songs I posted. As you can see by the cover of that various artists compilation, a gazillion answer records were released in the 50s and 60s. Apparently The Teenagers' Weekly was a regular supplement to the Australian Women's Weekly in the early 1960s. It's emphasis was on fashions for teenagers and pop music artists of the period. At least that is the only Teenagers Weekly I found in my search.

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Alex, and have a nice holiday weekend!

  3. I had no idea there were answer to Runaround Sue which is great! I still prefer the original with his smooth voice along with the back ups and the sax. The second one was fun to listen to and you buy what she is saying. The third one-well, she is a little devil:) Her voice, for being young and the era, is quite raunchy. I was left with the feeling that she could runaround but beat up anyone who might try to ruin her reputation. Now, on to the next 3....I agian, will go with Fleetwood Mac because it is very unique in the way the music is styled along with Stevie Nicks unique voice. The second one makes a great effort and I actually like her voice and the way the music is done which honours the original. The third on is the one I like the least even though they have Stevie Nicks. I hate that background beat which became annoying and was too fast. It set me on edge. The last one is a big no. I always enjoy listening and i wanted to say that I love your background showcasing what was on the Dell's walls especially the couple dancing. Have a great long weekend!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming over, my new best friend! :) I say that because I love the way you are fleshing out your comments lately regardless of whether you like the songs or not. That's wonderful and I thank you again for the extra time and effort!

How about that movie clip of Dion DiMucci singing to a stiff supper club crowd in the movie Twist Around the Clock? That video is another example of syncing remastered studio audio with old film footage. YouTube has been transformed by producers doing this kind of work.

I think you might appreciate this tidbit, BB: Contestant #3 in the first match - Linda Laurie - appeared on the TV game show To Tell The Truth. Watch this clip!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_IxVutpv5I

Sadly Linda died of cancer at my current age, 68, and on my birthday in 2009.

Fleetwood Mac is hard to beat, especially when you listen to that remastered version of their big hit "Dreams." I am glad you liked the cover by Angela "Angie" Vazquez and her band of brothers Vazquez Sounds aka V-Sounds. I like their version, too, and I also love young Angie's performance years ago when she did a cover of "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5. Click the green link in my post and it will take you to the clip on Dailymotion. You and I differ on the third song in the second match because I really enjoy the update of "Dreams" recorded by the EDM duo Deep Dish featuring re-recorded vocals by Stevie Nicks. I have it in my collection and use its faster tempo to pace my workouts.

Well, this was an extremely kind comment from you, Birgit, and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much for coming, dear friend. I wish you a very happy weekend as well!

    2. I watched the clip and that was fun to see especially that the one star was Ralph Bellamy. Betty White always loved game shows and was not sure about who the other 2 were...I know their faces. What a shame she passed too young in my book

      Delete
    3. Thanks for taking time to view that vintage game show clip, Birgit! I agree it gave us a good look at Ralph Bellamy and young Betty White who appeared on many game shows. The other female celebrity panelist on the show was dancer, choreographer and actress Marge Champion, wife of Gower Champion, who just turned age 99 this month! Early in her career Marge was a dance model for Walt Disney Studios' animated films. She was the model for Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the model for "The Blue Fairy" in Pinocchio (1940) and movement model for "Hyacinth Hippo" in Fantasia (1940).

Incidentally, I learned that Linda Laurie wrote the song "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" which was a hit single for Helen Reddy in late 1973/early 1974.

Thanks again for returning to chat, dear friend BB!

      Delete
    4. I thought it was Marge Champion! She was such a great dancer with her husband and were showcased in films like Showboat. They did a beautiful dance routine to Smoke Gets in your Eyes. I know she was the model for the Disney ventures your mentioned. Congrats to her for becoming 99 this year. I bet she has missed her husband even though he died all those years ago.

    5. Thanks for reading the extra tidbits I found for you, BB! I too remember Marge & Gower Champion from my youth. :)

  4. How funny... I don't guess I knew there were two female "rebuttals" to Dion's "Runaround Sue"! Both are enjoyable, but I still prefer Dion's original. :)

As for "Dreams", I was quite impressed by the cover from Angie Vasquez - she had a great voice, but my favorite has to be the one released by the entire band. Stevie seems to have pepped it up a bit in her solo version.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

How are you, dear friend? Thank you very much for dropping in to see what Shady has up his sleeve this week - a full house plus one extra card. That's what I call a Winning Hand! :)

Ha! They should be called "rebuttal songs." That's a great idea, Kelly. You can see how many there are by gazing at the artwork on the various artists CD compilation that contains the Ginger Davis and The Snaps recording "I'm No Runaround." I agree that Dion's swaggering original of "Runaround Sue" is still the one to beat. It doesn't surprise me that the original of "Dreams" remains your favorite, too, although I find it interesting that your ears match Birgit's (above) when it comes to the rendition by Angie and V-Sounds. Why don't you go over to Dailymotion (via my green link) and watch a very young Angie covering the Jackson 5 hit "I Want You Back"? That particular live performance is not available on YouTube. As I told BB, I actually prefer the third "Dreams" version, the house mix put together by Stevie and the Deep Dish guys. If you haven't seen it, be sure to catch Stevie Nicks in American Horror Story: Coven. She rocks!

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Kelly, and have a super weekend!

  5. OMG Shady! I'll say you have a full house! First off, your playing cards are really cool! Aces high, in fact!

Dion is the best! He made that song popular in my 7th grade year, lol (don't tell anyone)! I would always get kidded about "Runaround Sue", as some of the kids at school called me Sue. But, I love the song. Dion is such a doll, with a handsome voice and stage presence! But, you know, even though I've seen this video before and love watching him, I just can't get past the dull audience! There is no movement, and very few smiles. I know, 'back in the day', there was very strict rules on respect of an entertainer! I guess if you couldn't sit still, you were put in the back, lol! I will have to go with the real Dion, but I did get a kick out of Linda Laurie's rendition "Stay at Home Sue"! Too funny, but a good try. You know, Shady, she sort of has a Wanda Jackson style about her. I got a kick out of this song.

And, oh, "Dreams". Well, of course I'm a great admirer of Stevie Nicks, and wish I could sing like she does...what a unique and somewhat haunting voice! Fleetwood Mac is a fabulous group with so much talent, individually and as a whole! Angie, of Vazquez Sounds is magnificent! The first note out of her mouth had me! The instrumental arrangement was great, and, that girl owned this song!
    * Sheesh, Shady! Making it a little difficult, aren't you!

Stevie Nicks and Deep Dish feat! Wow. Love this beat of this one, almost a disco flare to it. And, her voice rules, as usual! I'm glad I listened to the entire song, because, along with the two other cuts, I have totally come to get the meaning, and appreciate it more! I'm afraid I can't pick a favorite on this one, Shady!

Well, Shady, I must agree...these kings and queens are truly aces! You gotta know it when it is so difficult to pick a favorite! Great, colorful post, dear friend! So glad to see you this week again.

Thank you for sharing the variations of two great hit songs! Take care dear friend, and have a wonderfully safe Labor Day! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne! (May I call you "Runaround Sue"? :)

Thank you very much for coming to this week's platter party! As you can plainly see, Shady dealt the cards from the bottom of the deck and came up with a Winning Hand! By the way, I hope you read the fine print and understand that wagering is prohibited. I was tempted to bet the entire family nest egg on contestant #3 - Linda Laurie! :)

Let me back up and address your remarks one at a time. In that rock 'n' roll movie Twist Around the Clock, it is indeed a mystery why the director of the film didn't instruct the people in the audience to react to Dion's singing with a little more enthusiasm. Shucks, the first time the camera cut away from Dion and showed a closeup of people watching him, I thought I was looking at Mount Rushmore. :) I think you are on the right track with your explanation. At the time this movie was released, the popular music industry was still largely dominated by older people, the Lawrence Welk generation, men who grew up in an era when it was customary for people to quietly and politely listen to singers and clap at the end when they took their bow. While it is true that artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry had already been shaking things up for years, whipping their teenage audiences into a frenzy, the men who made movies like this one were in denial, still clinging to the belief that rock 'n' roll was a novelty, a silly, passing fad. They simply didn't get it. A few years later the Beatles came along and sealed the deal, making audience participation - screaming, jumping, gesticulating and fainting in the aisle - the norm once and for all. Twist Around The Clock was a remake of the 1956 film Rock Around The Clock that starred Bill Haley & His Comets. In spite of the similar title, Haley's Comets did not appear in this one. Instead Chubby Checker, The Marcels and pop singer Vicki Spencer rounded out the cast of musical guests.

I'm glad you enjoyed Linda Laurie's sassy Wanda Jacksonesque cover "Stay-At-Home Sue." Please read my reply to Birgit (above) and catch Linda's appearance on To Tell The Truth. It's a shame Linda died young of cancer.

I agree that Stevie Nicks' voice could best be described as haunting. Did you see her in American Horror story: Coven? I'm thrilled that you like the covers of "Dreams" recorded by Vazquez Sounds and by Deep Dish feat. Stevie Nicks. Angela Vazquez has encountered her share of haters on YouTube, critics who say she can't really sing very well and that her vocals are run through auto tune. As a producer and former sound mixer, I say all that matters is the finished product. On their cover of "Dreams" V-Sounds, along with the studio wizards who did the mixing, came up with an exciting recording, one that every person who commented on this post so far appreciates. "Mission accomplished."

Let's call a spade a spade, Suzanne. As a friend you are aces! :) I'm so glad you had fun here today and I thank you again for coming. I hope Scootie is enjoying the new school year and I wish you a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. Come on back next Thursday and meet the newest member of The Shady Bunch DJ staff - Dell Rat Tom! :)

    2. I did like all of the "Dreams" versions, strangely enough! Each one offers a separate, yet similar and true account of the story line. I know the Stevie Nicks, Deep Dish feat was quite fast, but furious and powerful! You are right about the Vazquez cover..."Mission Accomplished!"

So, I will leave for now, and tune in next time for "Dell Rat Tom!" I can only imagine, Shady! Signing out as "Runaround Sue", lol!

    3. Hi again, Suzanne!

I know you're no runaround Sue. You're a stay-at-home Sue. :) I like how you and I both appreciate all three versions of "Dreams." I never post a recording unless I either love it or like it a lot, and that rule applies to all six versions in this post.

Dell Rat Tom has his stack of wax all set to spin, and he is eager to entertain you next Thursday on his new radio show Jukebox Giants featuring the greatest hits of the Shady Dell.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Suzanne, and have a wonderful holiday weekend!

  6. I love Dion's Runaround Sue and I laughed at the video...all that cigarette smoke and I wondered if those were the very first crowd of AARP clients. Geez Louise, were they even real or just wax models? Loved it anyway and his version was great. I didn't remember the rebuttals. Speaking of songs with girl names..(I know, you weren't really on that track!) I think there's been a song for almost any girl back in the 50's and 60's. Of course my favorite would have to be "Kathy's Clown"..just sayin! Give me Stevie Nick's version..love her voice. Glad I made it over today since it's my 44th wedding anniversary..what a way to end August! Have a great weekend, it's a long one for most of us. Take care good friend!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you very much for making time to come over here on your wedding anniversary, dear friend. That's very nice of you! I just came from your post and I'm all verklempt. What a wonderful couple you and Jack made back then and now.

I'm glad you got a kick out of Shady's Winning Hand +1. Yessum, there was cigarette smoke hanging in the air of that club and the Geritol crowd was out in force. Maybe Dion's performance took place in a retirement home. :)

I agree there are hundreds of popular songs of the 50s and 60s that have girl name titles. There was a blog hop a while back in which people posted as many such songs as they could think of. Technically it would need to be "Kathleen's Clown" to match your name, wouldn't it? :) As I am sure you know, there was even a popular record released in 1961 by Lee Dorsey entitled "Ya Ya." :)

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntenTbHy5fw

On the second triple play of this post, there are two recordings that have Stevie Nicks on lead vocals. It would be cool to find out that your ears match mine and you prefer the faster tempo EDM mix by Deep Dish that features Stevie with a re-recorded vocal track.

Your anniversary was indeed the ideal way for you and Jack to bring the month of August to a close at The Pines. I hope the heat and humidity have dissipated since we last connected, and I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday weekend. Thanks again for coming, dear friend YaYa and, once again, happy anniversary!

How are you, dear friend? Thank you for staying up late to visit and comment as Shady deals his Winning Hand - a full house + 1 extra card up his sleeve!

Both featured songs in the post should be familiar to most adults over 30, and I agree that the incumbents (original versions) are tough to beat. The newly remastered version of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" really pops, doesn't it? In 2018 alone there have been a large number of remastered originals uploaded to YouTube, and I look forward to presenting them as I go along.

You are a pAwesome friend for starting your holiday weekend with a visit to Shady's Place. Thanks again for joining the fun. I await your latest band battle and wish you a tunetastic weekend as well, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Tom,

Now that you mentioned I do recall seeing a number of remastered classics on YT. The remastered version sounds amazing! Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite classic bands. DD#2 saw Stevie Nicks in concert a few years ago and shared a fabulous photo of her that she got with her iPhone. I'd love to photograph some of my favorite artists but the mewsic is so loud that I can't risk losing more my hearing just to get some fun pictures. Have a good week, my friend. It's gonna be a wild one for me!

Yessum, things were looking grim on YouTube a few years ago with all the copyright hassles, but today there is a fresh, steady new supply of great looking and great sounding original oldies being uploaded to the delight of mewsic bloggers like us.

That must have been a thrill for your younger daughter to see Stevie in concert and take a picture of her. Tell your daughter not to miss Stevie's acting and singing performances in American Horror Story: Coven. By the way, Mrs. Shady and I are now only one episode away from the end of the Haven series. It took us all this time to get there. We are sad to see it end (and were sad to see Duke die).

    1. Hi, Toni!

How are you this holiday weekend, dear friend? Thanks for coming to Shady's casino to hear me play my Winning Hand!

To answer your question, I for one did not own the Fleetwood Mac album Rumors or any of their other albums. :) I just wasn't into that style of rock at the time. I didn't own any Jackson Browne, didn't own any Boz Scaggs, and wasn't very interested in Heart either. By the early 70s, thanks to Alice Cooper, I had an ear for metal. I wish I could see Alice Cooper on the grandstand at the York Fair a few days from now!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the V-Sounds cover of "Rumors." Angela has her share of critics on YouTube, pop fans who say she relies too heavily on machines to refine her vocals, but that doesn't matter at all to me, only the finished product that reaches my ears.

Thank you again for dropping by, dear friend Toni, and have a safe and happy Labor Day!

I can't get over how much Angie Vazquez sounds like Stevie Nicks on her cover of Dreams! She is an amazing young woman!

I've always been a fan of Fleetwood Mac and it's interesting that Stevie Nicks also made an appearance in that other cover. I especially love how Dion's "Runaway Sue" garnered so many responses. You have success on your hands if your songs can generate that much publicity! I agree, these songs are aces!

  10. I'm curious about those Runaround Sue answer songs. According to the dates you supply, they were released either at the very same time as the original or very, very closely thereafter. Also, on the Ginger Snaps one, if you squint hard enough, you'll see on the record that the songwriting is credited SOLELY to (Dion) DiMucci and (Earnie) Maresca. Obviously the melody is theirs, but did one of them also write the lyrics to the answer song? The whole thing seems pre-planned. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'm curious.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming over to see what Shady has up his sleeve, good buddy - a full house plus one extra card - what a Winning Hand!

The idea behind an "answer song" is to strike while the iron is hot, to rush release the record while the original is still on the chart and fresh in everybody's mind. I read that the Ginger Davis single "I'm No Runaround" was indeed co-written by Dion DiMucci and Ernie Maresca in answer to Dion's hit. I can see the logic, because it essentially gave the original hit a new lease on life and afforded it the opportunity to take another ride on the chart. Dion's "Runaround Sue" was released in September 1961. "I'm No Run Around" was released in October, and Linda Laurie's "Stay-At-Home Sue" hit the street in November and includes these composing credits: E. Maresca, D. DiMucci, G. Schwartz, R. Greenberg, V. Schwartz. Answer songs rarely perform as well as the originals and, in the case of "Runaround Sue, neither of these answer records saw any chart action.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. I hope your week is going well and I invite you back here two days from now when Dell Rat Tom makes his radio debut with his Jukebox Giants program on S-P-M-M. Hope to see you then!

<< Thank you for visiting all the blogs where I've been a guest. You have always been so supportive, and I just want to tell you again how much I appreciate that! >>

You are very welcome, Sherry. I am glad to lend a helping hand to a friend and you are one of my oldest and dearest. I hope your new book is a smashing success. Thank you again for setting aside time to come see me today. Have a great week!

  12. I had to kick back, close my eyes and let old Fleetwood take me back a few years. That's one great song to reminisce with. I'd forgotten Run Away Sue was such a hit. My goodness time is a jet plane these days. I was sure these songs were on the radio just yesterday. :-)

    1. Hi, Cheryl-Lee!

Thanks for joining the platter party, dear friend! I'm glad you enjoyed the show.

It's good to know you were the right age to appreciate Fleetwood Mac when they were at their peak. I'm glad their "Dreams" song took you back to those times. Hopefully they were happy ones. "Runaround Sue" was a big hit back in the day and it's safe to say it is still played often on oldies radio channels, on jukeboxes and in personal vinyl and CD collections. I never grow tired of it and I love both of these covers.

Thank you again for coming by on your busy Wednesday, dear friend Cheryl, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  13. Oh my goodness! I love love love love me some Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks!!! I really enjoyed all the versions of Dreams. I think Angie Vasquez does a great job in keeping the songs integrity while having her own sound.
Run around sue is not of my fave songs but its a very interesting story around it. I love your posts! I always learn something new.

    1. Hi, Holliberry!

How are you today, dear friend? Thank you very much for dropping in as I play my Winning Hand - a full house + 1 extra card up my sleeve!

I'm delighted to know you appreciate all three versions of "Dreams." The V-Sounds cover of that Fleetwood Mac hit is the Mexican sibling group's best recording to date, in my opinion. Deep Dish feat. Stevie plays on my CD changer on a regular basis as I work out to my favorite up tempo sounds.

I'm glad you enjoyed learning about these two answer songs inspired by Dion's big hit "Runaround Sue."

I'm happy to know you enjoy reading, listening and learning over here at Shady's Place. Thank you again for coming. It is always a pleasure to have you over for a visit. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Holli!

    1. Hi, diedre!

Thank you very much for dropping in, dear friend! I am excited to see you and always appreciate your visits.

Looks like I hit the jackpot with my Winning Hand because the two featured songs in the post happen to be among your favorites. I'm thrilled to know it! I was pleasantly surprised to find four worthy covers of these two classics with sound quality that meets SPMM standards. I often sift through a dozen or more YouTube uploads before finding a video that is acceptable for use in a post. Slowly but surely, HQ recordings are becoming more plentiful making the search easier.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend diedre. Please take good care of yourself and come back and see me again soon!

  15. Hi Tom,
I'm glad you alerted me to this post of yours. I didn't realize you had this new one. I don't remember receiving an email alert but life has been really out of whack lately (a family member passed away and then the husband of a good friend also passed away and my mom's car broke down and had to be towed so it's been a dizzying array of unexpecteds).
Anyway, thanks for letting me know. I'm glad I didn't miss this one.
I have always liked Dion's "Runaround Sue" and had no idea there were these answers (or the others that you illustrated; I went and checked out Josephine's "They Took You Away, I'm Glad I'm Glad" haha. She's quite the nutso; I hope they took her away too...). I did enjoy Ginger Davis & The Snaps response song. Not so much with "Stay at Home Sue". Overall, Dion's original is my favorite.

And that goes with Dreams too. I have always loved Fleetwood Mac and I definitely have a fondness for "Dreams". Rumours is probably my favorite FM album (as well as Tango in the Night). I don't think anyone can outdo Stevie and Fleetwood Mac.
I was impressed with Vazquez Sounds though. Their version was fantastic. Not as good as the original, in my opinion, but definitely noteworthy. If lead singer Angie Vazquez was 10 when they blew up YouTube with their cover of Adele's "In the Deep" in 2011, then she was 16 when doing "Dreams". Very impressive!

I didn't at all care for the electronic dance version of Dreams, even though it was Stevie on vocals with Deep Dish. It just didn't mesh for me.

When you have such great originals by top artists, it is tough to beat them. It happens for sure, but it's rare.

Thanks for presenting us another post that was Aces!
Have a good week my friend,

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Hi, Michele!

I'm glad you could make it over for this one, dear friend. Thank you!

Yessum, you can see by the cover of that various artists CD that many answer songs were rush released on the heels of major hits. Most of them were "junk" records that charted low or missed the chart entirely, but a few, like Jo Ann Campbell's "I'm The Girl From Wolverton Mountain," were quite good. I have also developed a fondness for Jody Miller in recent years and I like her answer song "Queen Of the House."

It doesn't surprise me that you prefer both originals in the post. Most readers have told me the same. It's hard to find people who are excited about EDM house remixes, but I like them and have quite a few in my CD collection (including this Deep Dish special) and they work well for pacing exercise sessions. Little Angela Vazquez collected her share of naysayers over the years - picky fans who claim she is too dependent on auto tune, but I certainly like the finished products on her sibling group's covers of "I Want You Back" and "Dreams." If you like FM and Stevie Nicks be sure to catch Stevie's acting and singing in American Horror Story: Coven. By the way, Mrs. Shady and I are eagerly awaiting another season of Good Girls, the show you recommended, and I urge you to watch From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, Sharp Objects, Goliath, Bosch, The Newsroom and House of Cards.

Thanks again for making good on your promise, dear friend Michele. I hope your life has settled down a bit by now and I wish you a safe and happy week ahead!

  16. Thanks for the TV recommendations. I did see Stevie in American Horror Story. I haven't been keeping up with the series since the Hotel one. I saw the first and maybe the second of that one and just wasn't intrigued. Then I get caught in the trap that I need to watch the series seasons in order and I haven't been able to get back to Hotel. But I should just skip that one and move onto the next. I think I'm at least one or two behind by now.

RE: The Newsroom: I LOVED that show and was so sad when it was cancelled. It was a brilliant story of life in the newsroom. I adored the relationship ups and downs between Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer; the young cast of Alison Pill (Margaret/Maggie Jordan), Dev Patel (Neal), John Gallager (Jim Harper), Tom Sedoski (don Keefer) & Olivia Munn (Sloan Sabbith) were fabulous. Jane Fonda and Sam Waterston were wonderful too and Charlie Skinner's death (Sam Waterston) in the end was a huge disappointment for fans. In fact, I have the series finale episode saved on my TiVo. I just can't bear to erase it!

I also was keeping up with House of Cards. I need to catch up with the last season (before what's his face was forced to leave... Kevin Spacey).

I need to get HBO in order to catch up with Sharp Objects. Is it good? I love Amy Adams.
I also need to watch Goliath. It sounds good. And I have amazon prime so I should be able to get caught up quickly.I really like Maria Bello and was so irritated when her show Prime Suspect, in which she played a NYPD homicide detective, was cancelled after only one season.

Bosch I don't know anything about but it's another amazon series so I'll have to check it out.
I also don't know anything about From Dusk til Dawn...

    Thanks for the recommendations!

I also forgot to mention in my previous comment about the Vazquez brothers (on drums and piano): they were fabulous too!
I'll have to check out the answer songs you referenced too...
    Much to do!!

    talk soon.

    1. Hi, Michele!

I'm glad I checked back here and found a follow-up comment from you. Thank you, dear friend!

Seems you and I share similar taste in TV series, however I did enjoy the Hotel season of AHS with Lady Gaga. It isn't essential to watch every season of the series in order because, as you know, every season is a different story with the regular players taking on different roles. Alexandra Breckenridge, who appeared in season 1, is now one of the stars on This Is Us.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Newsroom as much as Mrs. Shady and I did. She was very upset when the series suddenly came to an end. I'm sure you saw Olivia Munn in the news recently, the controversy over her outing a sex offender in the cast of her new motion picture.

I highly recommend the limited series Sharp Objects. Amy Adams is one of the finest actresses working today and she covers up, dresses down and delivers a realistic portrayal of a young, substance abusing reporter dealing with demons and carrying emotional baggage from her youth. The cast is superb. Wait until you see the performance of Eliza Scanlen, the young Australian actress who portrays Amy's character's teenage half-sister. She is a scene stealer, a break-out star on the rise! Goliath stars Billy Bob Thornton, William Hurt, Molly Parker (who joined House of Cards in season two) and, as you mentioned, Maria Bello. They are all great. From Dusk Till Dawn: the Series is set in Texas and has the Texas Rangers vs. the outlaw Gecko brothers vs. a horde of bloodthirsty vampires. It is an extremely well done series spawned by the hit film. Midnight Texas is a show along similar lines and it is returning for another season on, I think, NBC. There is also Season 3 of Stranger Things now playing.

Thanks again for returning to chat, dear friend Michele. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    2. Hey, just popping over to check out your Wednesday post and came back on the Shady's Place tab that was open to this page and our comments here. So do give me some dish: I did not hear anything about Olivia Munn's outing a co-star. I don't think I did anyway. It's not ringing a bell. Pray tell, Do tell!
